50 Cent, The Game, Eminem, Snoop, Fat Joe, Nelly, Ja Rule

50 Cent’s The Massacre takes another week at No. 1 with sales of 771,000 copies. The Game’s The Documentary rose from No. 5 to No. 3 while Eminem’s Encore reappeared at No. 10.

A DVD entitled Infamous Times: The Original 50 Cent, about the guy who inspired 50 Cent’s name, was released last week.

Snoop and The Game will begin their U.S. tour April 15th. Snoop is also working on a videogame called Fear and Respect that’s due in November. The article includes initial tour dates, links to videos from The Game and Snoop plus photos from the video shoot for Signs with Justin Timberlake.

Fat Joe reflects on the success of the single Lean Back, which is being widely licensed from “`Ellen DeGeneres’ to `The Apprentice’ to `Girlfriends’ . . . even Mothers Against Drunk Driving,” while explaining that he doesn’t really want to be known for rap battles.

Nelly will release the soundtrack to The Longest Yard May 16th on Derrty Ent. He’s also taking the “Sweat/Suit: Up Close & Personal” tour on the road with Fat Joe, T.I. and The St. Lunatics beginning March 19th. The press release contains the tour schedule.

Derrty Ent. will bring out a collaborative album later this year from Gipp and Ali called Kinfolk.

A civil suit has been filed against Ja Rule by that Canadian guy he hit.

Fashion: Ecko, Baby Phat, Gothic/Lolita

To follow up on my attack on hip hop fashion, I got another look at the March issue of GQ and noticed that Marc Ecko’s getting into some nice work with colors, though his Ecko Unltd. website doesn’t communicate that. Partly I’m still playing catchup with what’s happening with fashion so it will continue to be hit or miss. I’m just not that interested in the primary color trends I’m seeing in a lot of hip hip fashions as well as over at Izod. Plus, I have absolutely no desire to see preppy fashions make a comeback.

On a related note, Ecko got his start with t-shirts and has definitely run with the ball since then. I’m looking at getting into t-shirts myself but it’s a long ways off and may not be hip hop related. I’m even thinking of attending this workshop with Liz TerboLizard.

In related fashion news, Russell Simmons (reg req) states that the “ideas that come from the streets are the ones that pay the bills in Paris,” but what if Paris starts looking at different streets? While it’s true that hip hop has created numerous trends in fashion, Simmons assertion that when “we choose something, we choose it for the world” is a dangerous assumption in the always fluctuating world of fashion.

Recent Baby Phat runways shows included a rad handbag (reg req) designed by Shana Kent-Kincaid. The bag is described as resembling a boombox at first glance and was a response to a Baby Phat “theme [that] was said to be based on James Bond, and Kent-Kincaid says she spent considerable time looking at Bond photos.”

The article continues:
“The biggest challenge, she says, is the pressure to come up with something different at a time when everybody is seeing the same movies, street culture, exhibitions and other trends. The boxes were urban, modern, fresh and sleek enough not to compete with the clothes.”

In loosely related news, The New York Times recently reported on Gwen Stefani’s appropriation of Japanes Gothic/Lolita fashions that has caused great controversy in the communities from which the styles originated.

Xzibit Cited for Pot but Concert a Success

Though Xzibit was apparently cited for marijuana possession on his way into Guam, the concert, where “plumes of smoke . . . filled the air,” was deemed a success. However, the reviewer pointed out that since “Xzibit told the Guam audience just how sure he was that he could outdrink everyone there,” it was “obviously . . . Xzibit’s first visit to Guam.”

ProHipHop officially supports the full scale legalization of marijuana and suggests that you check out such organizations as NORML and the Marijuana Policy Project. By the way, the MPP may have employment opportunities.

In other Xzibit news, the futon critic is holding a contest for free copies of the upcoming DVD release of Pimp My Ride: The Complete First Season.

ProHipHop Joins Media Bloggers Association

I’m happy to report that my application for the Media Bloggers Association was accepted.  To be perfectly frank, I’ve never joined anything with such a visible contingent of conservative thinkers before, but I appreciate the nonpartisan stance of the group and believe that’s what’s required to legitimize blogging at this stage.  I hate to sound naive, but perhaps it can also be a space for finding ways of working across difference without requiring people to compromise their values.  In any case, I’m glad to be a member.
