Counterfeiting Raid in New York

Wednesday afternoon Mondo Kim’s, an East Village video and music store, was raided for counterfeit material and 5 employees were arrested. Though an MTV account described the material as dvd and cd mixtapes of such artists as Jay-Z and 50 Cent, the exact nature of the material seized remains unclear. Since only 5 of around 20 employees present were arrested and computer equipment and/or dvd burners were seized, it seems a bit more complicated than a simple mixtape bust. Reportedly the NY Police and the Recording Industry Association of America, who’s been involved with a series of counterfeiting busts, worked together on this one. Guess we’ll know more soon but some of the past RIAA related busts have been for mixtapes and they seem uninterested in the differences between unofficially sanctioned mixtapes and outright counterfeits of albums.
