Though films like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Wedding Crashers dominated the [estimated] weekend box office, Hustle & Flow did just fine coming in at no. 7 with over $8 million. It looks like John Singleton’s luck is staying strong long past Sundance.

Hustle & Flow prepress, features and reviews have mostly been positive. Lead actor Terrence Howard has made multiple appearances on NPR. But I share A.O. Scott’s concerns about pimpery, even if his or her editor glossed them over in the headline.
