Four Brothers No. 1, Hustle & Flow No. 17
This weekend's big hit was the new movie from John Singleton, Four Brothers, that raked in over $21 million taking the top spot in the weekend box office tally.
That take should ease some of Singleton's disappointment over the fact that Hustle & Flow, a hip hop movie that he executive produced, didn't do as well as he'd hoped. In fact, Hustle & Flow has taken in a bit over $20 million to date and dropped this weekend from no. 12 to no. 17.
However, Four Brothers isn't a hip hop movie so much as it's a movie directed by John Singleton, who's responsible for some of the most important hip hop flicks including Boyz N the Hood, that stars Mark Wahlberg, first known as the young rapper Marky Mark, and Andre Benjamin, Outkast's Andre 3000.
And, no, killing people with guns in an urban setting doesn't make it hip hop, since death, guns and cities existed long before rap music appeared.
Overall, Four Brothers has gotten mixed reviews and Andre Benjamin is getting some extra attention with an appearance on NPR and an interview at blackfilm.com.
