50 Cent: Dissing Kanye, Bossing G-Unit

It's not a battle yet and I hope it doesn't become one.  But 50 Cent's comments about Kanye West are a real headscratcher, yessir!

At MTV.com Shaheem Reid shares 50's latest thoughts:
"I feel like Kanye West is successful because of me . . . After 50 Cent, [hip-hop fans] was looking for something non-confrontational, and they went after first thing that came along. That was Kanye West, and his record took off."

Huh?

Dude, don't you get it?  It's Kanye's fascinating contradictions that make him the man of the hour (that white journalists just can't get enough of).  Actually, I don't want to go overboard, but it is true that folks have been looking for a change up.  In many ways, 50 Cent represents the final peak of an era and Kanye represents the future.

In any case, back to the MTV article.  I believe such statements from 50 are a sign of his insecurity.  Kanye is someone he can't battle directly because Kanye doesn't do 50's shtick.  And Kanye has the ability to address issues like the Katrina disaster in a way that 50 just can't.  50 may be a smart man but it's a very focused intelligence that doesn't move well beyond music, violence and marketing.

Speaking of business, since this is ProHipHop, 50 Cent the businessman seems to be extremely conservative and he increasingly reveals himself as an authoritarian figure.  In discussing the soundtrack for the upcoming movie, Get Rich or Die Tryin' 50 reveals the kind of man he is as boss:
"The music is great . . . I got great performances from each one of the artists: Lloyd Banks, Tony Yayo, Young Buck, Mobb Deep, Olivia, M.O.P. I was able to let them work, and while they're recording their albums, I took my favorite records from them, like, 'Oh, that's hot. Let me put that on my soundtrack.' I took my favorite records."

50 admits that collecting the hottest records for his soundtrack was a little selfish, but he wanted to make a soundtrack that stands the test of time — besides, he's the boss.

"I put the people closest to me on it," he added of the album. "I don't have a lot of friends. When I look around, I play a role different from the average friend. Your friend is somebody you have a personal relationship with, but your friend doesn't actually employ you. Sometimes I'm sure they would like to tell me '50, would you shut the f--- up!' Or 'Get out of here!' But they don't tell me that 'cause I employ them."

To tally things up:
50 is threatened by Kanye's success
50 doesn't have a lot of friends
50 relates to G-Unit artists as his employees

You know, it's great to see artists in management.  It's a reminder that after the revolution, you'll just have new overseers.

It will be interesting to see how all this plays out. I do think that, in some ways, 50 and Kanye were separated at birth. One took a pretty hard route and the other a more privileged path but both are building empires.

I have to admit I was puzzled by the timing of 50's comments until I looked back at my posts and saw the one entitled:

I could be totally wrong, but I bet 50 was expecting a different outcome. In any case, they actually could both stay quite strong and will probably also outshine the artists they're trying to help, at least in the near future.
