I’d like to share a belated weekend box office report to let you know the official take for Bow Wow’s Roll Bounce ($7,570,366) and for the other non-hip hop movie with rappers that act, John Singleton’s Four Brothers ($882,659). Also, the hip hop Gatsby flick G brought in $142,489 while The Longest Yard garnered a mere $38,895 followed by Hustle & Flow with $20,142.
I guess you couldn’t call it sleep, but Bow Wow’s debut in 70s skate flick Roll Bounce just doesn’t seem to be exciting folks. Reviews ranged from pretty good to awful:
New York Daily News – “captures the decade’s texture with a well-earned nostalgia that never seems cheap”
NY Times – “has heart and good vibes but little else to recommend it”
BlackNews.com – “might be the biggest disappointment of the year”
G, a hip hop themed movie originally released in 2002 at various film festivals, is now viewable in a limited U.S. release. Actor Andre Royo discusses the flick.
In related news, John Singleton will receive DaimlerChrysler’s Behind The Lens award, to be presented October 23rd in LA, “for his work as a writer, director and producer of feature films that have provided a platform for change in the depiction of black stories on the screen.”
