The Pack's Vans Song Magically Unbanned

So, according to new sources, the Pack's Got My Vans On is supposedly going to run on MTV at some point with "minor edits".  Or something.

Update:
Sterfish notes in the comments:
I saw the video on MTV Jams yesterday. The name of the song is now just "Vans" and the word Vans was edited out of the lyric "I got my Vans on."

And that fits the original announcement distributed by David Bell via email:
That's right.  MTV asked Bay Area hip hop group The Pack to edit their video AND change the name of their song!  So the video as linked to below will NEVER be seen on MTV.

I apologize for adding to the confusion and will definitely have to look at my own complicity in blowing this out of proportion.  Special thanks to Eric Arnold who's been working on the story and hopefully will end up with something worth reporting.

I saw the video on MTV Jams yesterday. The name of the song is now just "Vans" and the word Vans was edited out of the lyric "I got my Vans on." I still find it really funny that MTV will make artists edit shoe companies out of their songs but have no problem with the numerous alcoholic beverages shouted out in hip-hop songs. How is "Pass The Courvouiseur" any better than "I Got My Vans On"?

Eric Arnold

Hmm. Maybe there should be an MTV3 for all the unedited and uncensored versions of all the videos they've tampered with over the years... check wikipedia for a run-down of some of the things mtv has changed over the years... it's stupid to call the song vans and edit that same word out of the chorus, but whatever, that's censorship for you. i'm also told there were visual edits, although i don't know offhand what they were. maybe someone who's seen both versions can compare?

From what I saw on the airing of the video this weekend on MTV Jams, other than blanking out the word "Vans" during the song, they also took out the scene where they throw Nikes in the trash can. I also dont think they showed the girls in the beginning displaying their Vans shoes in front of the camera.

What I still don't get is the discrepency between the way MTV censors things as opposed to the way BET censors things. Cause I've seen the same video aired on BET, but from what I can recall, they didn't blank out "Vans" from the lyrics. Aren't both companies subsidiaries of Viacom?

Clyde Smith

BET and MTV are both part of Viacom but they're separate divisions within a larger organization with their own decision making processes.

There's actually little reason for them to adopt the same approach given that they are intended to reach different demographics groups, however much they overlap.

My favorite was when they used to blur out pot leaves on MTV and guns on BET in the same gangsta rap videos, at least BET got their priorities straight on that one.

jj

its just all about money. mtv doesnt want anyone advertising without paying them.

Keith

I don't think it's because they want money for advertising- it's because this could hurt their relationship with other sponsors and advertisers that are competitors of Vans. not to mention the song tells you to "throw away" Nikes.

luv the pack

i really lik that song cuz ones mi cousin

wayne nelson

Im requesting help to get (the pack) managers email.i have some business interest to discuss with manager. wayne. wyn324@aol.com

i really like the song. bay area represent. but i agree w/ a eariler comment about the censoring....MTV does not want to hurt their relationship w/ another company
