I caught this this weekend and was very delighted by it. It wasn't corny, and I thought it was a big move for Common.

Clyde Smith

Yeah, I just watched it again and it works really well.

They seem to be sticking with Common through multiple campaigns as other people come and go. I either missed an overall deal or it's still emerging but it's working out to be a good fit for him.

rich

Sorry common, ending every line with hood isn't rhyming.

Another uninspiring rap from McCommon

Michele

I LOVE this commercial, "Give to the world, Peace Love and Gap" !! The Gap always has the best commercials ...

Sophia

The first time I heard this commercial I found it to be very catchy. What a magnificent jingle it is. But then again, I have always found Gap commercials to be very inspiring, upbeat and 5-star! Great job !

Musicgrrl

Are you people crazy?! The Gap is an evil corporation that is taking over the world by making us all dress the same. Boycott the Gap (and sell-out celebrities who advertise for them).

Clyde Smith

The Gap will do what they can but they can't take over the world. They can't make us wear their clothing but they can encourage us to.

Really, you should consider focusing on the sweatshop angle, maybe drop some relevant links to recent news. I haven't checked lately so I don't know where they stand with that.

Miggs

rock in the hood...
stop in the hood...
hip-hop in the hood....
stop in the hood...

rock, stop and hip-hop was when he ryhmed clyde smith...u obviously don't know much about rap

Miggs

did i say clyde smith? well soryy i was talking to rich

Clyde Smith

I see what you mean, Miggs.

Jim Chicagodom

I'm certain if "Common" showed up in "the 'hood" dressed like that, the next line of his lame rap would be:

"Got shot in the 'hood".

Get some style and / or some originality, folks. Stay the freak out of the Gap!

poppa z

The commercial sucks whether you know anything about hip-hop or not. It's terrible and Common should be fired.

This is called Advertising, it's a fact of life. This is the world we live in. Advertisers rely on visible people to help shape the way consumers see their products.

A lot of people make their living by turning abstract concepts into visceral pieces of communication.

This is reality...

Paul Hunter directed a spoof video for a Smirnoff product, why isn't anyone on his case?

dp

Ever think he uses "hood" so much cuz he's advertising a hoodie?

frog

What a sellout, just another giant corporation exploiting hip-hop culture as a product.

Ahren Hoy

I thought this was a great commercial, it's such a delight to see REAL hip-hop featured in the limelight... as opposed to the b.s. "hip-hop" that's all over the radio. Common's being real, and he's got something positive to say at the same time

I loved the last second to last line "Gifted like christmas so i love to rap" Common's still killing it, mainstream or not

you guys are so freakin retarded.. hes not talkin about a hoodie and theyre not trying to sell hip-hop as a product. hes saying its good when the love doesnt stop in the hood... and the guy whos talkin about getting shot missed the entire point of the commercial. AND he probably thinks he can rhyme now

and yes that is a tight line frog

Ashlie Atkinson

Ummm, he IS talking about hoodies, as well as the 'hood...it's a double entendre. He's selling hoodies, that's why they're so prominently featured.

bzr

C'mon now you can't give props to a guy for appearing in a Gap commercial...that's about as far from real as you can get. And his message is nothing about love--his message is "buy Gap clothing". To even talk about this like its anything other than an obnoxious ad jingle disrespects everything hip-hop is.

Renee

peace love the gap we gon give it to the world peace love the gap

Yo, the dude got a gig... a PAYING one. It's strictly biznessssssssss!

LF

If were able to put that on an album for himself he could buy all the hoodies he wants.

ravi

hey common has spent his whole musical career trying to put out a positive message to as many young people as he can. he got an opportunity here to reach a lot of people, a LOT of fucking idiot american people. sure he sold out but he didn't change his message and you've got to root for him for that simple fact

Bills

You guys are all crazy...loco.. its a commercial.. OF COURSE its gonna tell you to buy Gap... and its a DAMN good commercial... Common represents whats missing in hip hop (and it might be coming back now.. w/ artists like lupe, etc).. anyways, he's not selling out by trynna make some money... thats his right. And the fact that he made it funky, and something that you can enjoy... well you GOTTA give him props for that... he might not be making any points, or trynna be a positive person in the ad.. but his rhyming and his flow is still there.. its classic Common... and for the fool that said Common sucks... shows how much you know about real music... dude's been nominated more than once for the grammy... and his stuff is considered CLASSIC and MUST have in the real hip hop world... much respect to Common.. and now if you'll excuse me.. I need me a hoodie...

chitown2082

hey ppl,
can anybody send me the lyrics of this commercial. i love it
Please send me the LYRICS

dave champimple

who is dave champimple? no it's not me in the comercial he said

drew

at the end of the song, is it peace, love the gap or peace love and gap, im arguin with my bud about it so can someone hook me up with the lyrics or soemthing

jessethedestroyer

Dave Chappipple or whatever is obviously dave chapelle, a person who common can thank for much of his sucess. i'm also would guess that he uses this aberration of chapelles' name so his corperate masters don't have to pay chapipple for license rights. a dirty trick if it's true.

i'm not sure how anyone can find anything redeeming in this ad. so many of you have no idea what love or peace is. it has nothing to do with fashion rap or clothes for sheeple.

is there a gap in any 'hood' in america? i've lived in a few, and i've never seen one.

Clyde Smith

Obviously Champipple refers to a combination of Champale and Ripple that only a true hood rat could appreciate.

Now let's stop bickering and get back to Chrismas shopping, shall we?

Mimi

Can someone please tell me what he's saying when he says something like, "Dave cham-pipple"????

Mimi

Uh, sorry. I scanned the responses too fast.

clyde smith

omg get over it shit. Clyde who the heck cares. Do you have nothing better to do than bash gap commercials. Wow, humanity. God.

oops hehe. I meant the other guy, not you Clyde Smith. How about this, just to all the common haters out there. It was a damn good commercial. Get over it. If you hate it so much, next time the gap call you to do one of their commercials, show us how it's done. Oh wait.....

^ ^ mi

Peace Love The Gap! *cries* What a beautiful song.

Kevin B

Wow its pathetic how many hippies there are here complaining about fascism. Maybe you wouldnt be so afraid of the capitalist advertising market if you fucking got a job. Yes its a commercial, so go cry about it. theyre advertising a product yes. that must be evil... advertising... *rolls eyes* whew. thats some demonic stuff that there advertising. i think industry should sell things... without advertising. at least that way, the retarded drug addicted populus of lower class hippies will have 1 less thing to bitch about. aside from that i think the commercial is catchy. i wish the song was real and not necessarily about the gap. then i wouldnt feel weird for having a commercial based song on my ipod...

Clyde Smith

Here's somebody that connects the Gap and Lockheed Martin!

The Real Clyde Smith

geneva.b

Yeah, this isn't about rap, this is about profit margins. The GAP doesn't give a fuck about peace and love and Common doesn't give a fuck about the GAP. Everyone just wants to cash in on a little seasonal bling; corporate raps go against everything Common is supposed to stand for; freedom from commercialized bullshit. I know he's gotta eat but this gives me yet another reason to continue boycotting Old Navy, Banana Republic and GAP (all owned by Gap Inc., F.Y.I) as I have for the past two years. A completely unethical and offensive company.

Clyde Smith

Dave Champipple?

Oh, you mean Dave Champagne!

He's Common's bagpipe player:
http://www.davechampagne.com/

the surreal clyde smith

Peace, love and the gap?
Wouldn't war, intolerance and the gap be more appropriate?

Gapgurl

I love this commercial and finally someone understands that he is saying hood cause of... the hood on his sweatshirt. This is called marketing and it is done well. The Gold peace sign is screaming Christmas without being dorky, and I prefer this to seeing 50 cent advertise a candy shop.

John Mc

This commercial drives me nuts, it ranks right up there with those annoying Old Navy commercials. Peace, Love is OK…but the Gap? Are you fucking kidding? What the hell do they have to do with peace and love? I turn the channel and vomit every time that stupid commercial comes on. If that guy showed-up in “the Hood” dressed like that, he would get his ass handed to him.

Axel

I can't believe that anyone could say this commercial is "good," "entertaining," or effective merchandising. The rap/hip-hop world is stuck in some kind of time warp, still waving their hands about, punching their chests and making peace signs like they have since the Clinton administration. It is so tiresome -- so boring. Common is simply too common. Let's see something new. Target and Old Navy may not be the up-scale Gap, but at least they're original.

Peace Love and Black

I've never seen so many black people wearing GAP clothing... Times are a changin'

stirfriedrice

I might've failed to mention that the shit was creative
But once the man got you well he altered the native
Told her if she got an energetic gimmick
That she could make money, and she did it like a dummy
Now I see her in commercials, she's universal
She used to only swing it with the inner-city circle
Now she be in the burbs lickin rock and dressin hip
And on some dumb shit, when she comes to the city

~Common Sense, 1994 (I used to love H.E.R.)

Whether or not "Champipple" is a combination of "Champale and Ripple" and/or Dave Chapelle's name ("It's a celebration" from the Rick James sketch)
While that makes sense, it still sucks. For those of you that don't know, Champale and Ripple is a wine. While that's a good IDEA to combine all 3 names and, still make a little sense, it sounds stupid. Also, not everyone knows what Champale and Ripple is and, it's a national ad. The ad does it's job though, it's catchy.
There's no doubt that Common is a better than average MC......... He's got a lot of hot songs and, he's original. He's also got great freestyle skills. I've never been a HUGE fan but, I like him.
Even if that was a freestyle (I sincerely hope it was), I'd give it a 3 out of 10. Being esoteric is one thing, sounding good and, making sense another.

Clyde Smith

I just made up the explanation that Champipple came from Champale and Ripple.

It was a brainstorm!

un

What's so f__king great about the hood anyway that would make someone want to "show up" there, regardless of whether his clothing was going to get him his "ass handed to him" or not...

chrid

Remember those cool gap ads of the early mid-90's with people dancing to go-go and swing? Those were good commercials because they were more about creating energy and being unique. But now the gap is more about pushing celebrities and hawking specific items, as this current commercials clearly demonstrates.

Don't you all just like the pretty commercial? Isn't the song nice and catchy? Don't you like the nice message the famous man is rapping about? Advertising isn't so uch a demon as the infantilized society it has shaped or society into.

Claudia

I really love this commercial!! It's one of the best commercials Gap has ever done. I love it!! Common is the best, makes me want to move!
