El-P’s Smithereens Trailer
A trailer for a music video? That seemed really pretentious and off the mark when I saw it until I found that it’s a trailer for the video”s premier at NYTimes.com. On the homepage?
This feels like big news to me for independent hip hop. In fact, Def Jux is one of the Hip Hop Signs of LIfe about which I’ll be posting next week.
Congratulations to whoever put this together!

“The Rap Industry” is dead along with radio, video, and retail…However, Hip-Hop has never been more alive and thrives in the underground at labels like Def Jux, Rhymesayers, Stones Throw, and ABB. It thrives because its based on skills not image and it embracess diversity and creativity and turns its back on the minstrel like rap/thug club scene that has become a black eye to the Black community. We can’t over come and hold our heads up high when you got jiggs rapp’n ’bout chains hang’n low and chicken noodle soup!
This story is just further proof of that…
“It thrives because its based on skills not image and it embracess diversity and creativity”
Sometimes that’s the case. It must be nice to believe in the possibility of purity in a human context.
Nevertheless, I agree that that’s where a lot of the more interesting aspects of the rap game play out!
