Boost Mobile Anthem 2.0 Commercial
Boost Mobile Anthem 2.0 Commercial f/Jermaine Dupri, Young Jeezy & Mickey Avalon
Here's the Boost Mobile commercial featuring Jermaine Dupri, Young Jeezy and Mickey Avalon we've been expecting as part of the Boost Mobile Speaks to Youths campaign.
My only question is, "Who's the drag queen they call That Dude?"
Via Different Kitchen whose only question seems to be:
"Who the f-ck is Mickey Avalon though??"
I would so love to know the details of how this came to be. In particular, I would kill for the details of how Mickey Avalon was pitched to any of the relevant parties and especially for the details of how his presence was pitched to Jermaine and Jeezy.
Come on, insiders, give me a 2007 worth remembering!
I will say this, if they really want to take Mickey Avalon across the chasm from early adopters to the mainstream, they should shift their focus from the aspirational pitch [aspiration, that's what ties them together, duh!, i'm so slow] and connect the mutual love for white girls shared by Jeezy and Mickey. That could be huge.
But "I'm That Dude from Hollywood with my Hair in an Al Sharpton Perm" just ain't gonna make that leap. Mickey's just too easy to undermine from this angle of entry.
On a related note:
If Mickey Avalon's is supposed to be this year's equivalent of The Game [?!?], who would be a better fit with Jermaine and Jeezy?
Previous ProHipHop Coverage:
Boost Mobile's Anthem 2.0 Starring Young Jeezy, Jermaine Dupri & Mickey Avalon
Beyond the (White) Rapper: Nerdcore & Glam Rap

yeah, ?he? deff looks like a transexual!!
haha who would sign him looking like that?
what a joke!

I feel bad for saying those things but they're too obvious so I put them out there.
The drag queen line actually is a throwback to San Francisco but that's a side issue.
i.e., I'm not attacking him for his ambiguous sexuality and gender I just don't think this is a good fit and those elements lead to that mismatch.
But we'll see what happens.

Mickey Avalon is the shit. If you don't know Mickey, where have you been?

All of the haters need to keep quiet. Don't hate on Mickey because he is making more money from that one commercial than any of you will make in your entire life.

I was raised with Hip-hop / R&B but I like other genres of music. This commercial actually made me research the commercial to find out who the third guy in the commercial is. I liked his voice, style and delivery. I want to check out his music. For anyone who is a true lover of music and knows a star when they see and hear one, you will know that this guy Mickey has "that thing". It may be hard for some of you to understand or get it but watch... he is going to blow up. I have that ear I know, I have called many new artist, my family all thought I was crazy and bang they blew up. This Mickey guy is no different

Fans, publicists, they all love Mickey, even when they have to play pretend to truly communicate the power of his art.
Posted by: Clyde Smith | December 14, 2007 at 08:55 PM
I LOVE MICKEY!!! I guess you would have to listen to his music to fully understand why everyone feels and KNOWS why he is so AMAZING! The rest of you need to quit hating because you can never do what Mickey does. Rock on Mickey!

mickey avalon is the shit.

I love this commercial. I think all you assholes that hate on Mickey are intimidated, and are afraid you are closeted homos. Thats just how internal homophobia works, so before you go talking shit on people check yourself!
Posted by: IZZ | December 18, 2007 at 12:48 PM
Who said anything bout bein intimidated, homophobic and being scared of a gay guy?.... "That Dude" jus cant kick it wit the rest of rappers out there, he was so outta place in dat commercial it was like "who are u and wtf are u doin in this commercial???" All we're saying is that the guy sucks, end of story. Dun make it more than it is ok.... N him being white got nothin to do wit it. Eminem is white and I think he's great. Paul Wall is ok, n dis Mickey dude aint even on his level. Dont make this a big sexuality, racist issue please... Yea rap is pretty stereotyped but until someone GOOD comes along that can give me sumthin worth listenin to, then w/e. He's definetly not it, so send me another one....
Posted by: KFi | December 18, 2007 at 11:01 PM
And sure he's probably making more money than me (don't care) but the question is... will he ever make near as much money as a mainstream rapper? Like Kanye? Or jus someone people consider worth listening to?... I think you know the answer to that question... and if you don't know...or you happen to answer incorrectly... the answer is NO.
Posted by: KFi | December 18, 2007 at 11:08 PM
If its not about the way he looks, then I dunno WTF you are talking about. Change has to start somewhere, and I don't see someone like you doing any better. Rapping is not everyone's cup of tea, so the fact that Mickey did this commercial says a lot about him. Like the saying goes..."Don't hate, Appreciate!"

I don't care who he is or what he does. he is out of place and yes he looks like a drag queen thats all.

"im that dude got what you need, eyes on the prize picking up speed."
are you fvcking joking, i dont really follow rap so i had to research this commercial cause i thought it was a joke but i wasnt sure. im not homophobic racist or anything else, i dont care how he looks but really, does he belong in this commercial rapping? i dont remember who said on this forum this guy is going to be big, or blow up... sorry but your fvcking retarded, 14 words and you can hear that this guy is gonna be big? come on
Posted by: | December 20, 2007 at 02:23 AM
i havent yet researched mickey avalon but i have to give him credit. The commercial definately is helping him get more well known because i had no clue who he was and now i'm trying to find out. I saw the commercial and was like who the hell is that third guy and why is he in the same commercial as rappers.....so i'm curious enough to find out!

i swore it was buckwild from flavor of love 2.

I went to i tunes to sample some songs of Mickey, and it all just sounds so cheesy, boring, and cliche.
Posted by: Rocket Sauce | December 24, 2007 at 12:50 AM
Oh and about the trans-gay thing. I also googled some pictures. I dont think he's a she or anything like that. He just has a big nose, a skinny body and skinny face. Also, his clothes are "the right size or smaller", and that can look weird on any guy. Anyway If you search for it, you'll see that he just looks rough is all.
Posted by: Rock Sauce | December 24, 2007 at 12:53 AM
Mickey looks very very very very SUS to me lol

This commercial freaked me out. I couldn't believe how f'n weird that dude was, so I found out who he was and check out his music and now I like him even less. That guy has no chops. Who did he b*&w to get a record deal. Something I thought was very funny is on his myspace page. There is a blog about how he got booed by the entire crowd when he opened up for the chili peppers. I would have booed too, he sucks
Posted by: snadwich | December 24, 2007 at 10:57 PM
Is this freaking Frankie Avalon's son or something? weak sauce. I hope he enjoys his 15 min. at least after his music career fails he can still work on stage in San Fransisco.

It took me days to find out what the heck was that. Thanks to this web site I found out that is a man. Mickey Avalon is the reason why I would NEVER use the mobile. He KILLED the commercial.
Posted by: Nonofyourbeewax | December 29, 2007 at 12:50 AM
Mickey Avalon....never heard of him, since he's "that dude" and obviously looks rather queer in the commercial, he's not by chance related to Frankie Avalon??
Posted by: ToastyBitches | December 30, 2007 at 12:04 AM
mickey avalon may not be the best looking singer/rapper ever but his music is fantastic you guys are dissin him and you dont' even know who he is
Posted by: Joe | January 03, 2008 at 01:45 PM
Amen, Joe. He (she?) really does kick ass. Too bad that an open mind is so hard to come by
Posted by: Saerah | January 23, 2008 at 11:42 PM
The reality is, everybody's dissing him because this marketing campaign set him up to be dissed.
Which has been my point all along and is now well illustrated by the comments.
Since I like Mickey Avalon, I'm sorry to see this grave error in judgment that does such a poor job of building on his initial positioning as a former street hustler in Hollywood.
Posted by: Clyde Smith | January 24, 2008 at 12:23 AM
mickey avalon most definitey does NOT have "that thing". he's a fucking joke, and not even a funny one at that. jeezy should fuckin clap his ass.
Posted by: huh | January 27, 2008 at 04:04 AM
That's an unpleasant ending but I think it's time to move on since this is now a "I love him", "I hate him" exchange.
Mickey Avalon got served by this campaign.
Unless there was a big surge of sales they forgot to report, because introducing someone on a national scale in this manner should result in a sales surge, I think the falsely manufactured demographic of the "hustler" or "aspirational" youth was mobilized for this campaign and reveals the flaws of taking marketing reports by marketing firms at face value.
To Mickey Avalon's management, you should have been touring him relentlessly through indie rock clubs and sleazy nightclubs that would build on the fan base already revealed.
From the documentary footage the fan base was presented as rich kids who are currently living the low life. That's not an aspirational or hustler, in the hip hop sense, type of market.
So now he's nationally positioned as That Weird Guy who looked out of place.
Too bad for Mickey.
I'll keep an eye out for relevant news but I don't think we'll hear much more about this which will also serve to indicate that the campaign was a failure.
