Some interesting highlights from a press releases regarding Label Network's China Youth Culture Study 07':
This is the only consumer insights study about the 15-25-year-olds marketplace in China and is one of the most profiled subscription programs from Label Networks due to the rarity of getting this kind of information...
Sneaker Culture remains a competitive marketplace in China, but with new stand-outs including New Balance in Shanghai and Li Ning among 15-17-year-olds indicates that while the race it tight for top brands, there's movement and space for entry of others...
Basketball + hero Yao Ming continue to set new trends in sports with males and females taking up basketball and greatly influenced by the American NBA...
Shanghai + Rap/Hip-Hop: Here, young people clearly have the most diverse tastes in music preferences and the strongest market that prefers Rap/Hip-Hop at 37.1% among 15-25-year-olds.

Timbaland speaks on Jay-Z and American Gangster:
"He wants me to do the next single...He just does it for fun. We talked about [his next album]. He says it's just a hobby, ain't nothing else to do. When a person tells you that, what you supposed to say? 'You crazy'? He said, 'I don't wait for nothing. I'm there. I'm doing it for the love of music.' What am I supposed to say? 'You wack for doing it'? ... That's another thing: It could hurt him or it could make him be not the legend he is. That's the only thing I'm scared of for my friend."
MissInfo questions the idea of Jay-Z's involvement with American Gangster as a "spontaneous whim" and leaves it at that. The actual details of how Jay-Z's album came about will probably never be revealed but I like the idea of this being a spontaneous project. I think part of the problem with Kingdom Come is that it all seemed so calculated it was hard to appreciate.
If Jay-Z really does walk in and drop lyrics and he really has the power we all believe he has then why couldn't he do this? I think it fits him much better than Kingdom Come plus it allows him to relive his own fantasies of being a criminal kingpin. It could easily enhance his reputation and that's a chance worth taking.
Timbaland had this to say about why the needs of the Mosley Music Group will keep him from producing the entirety of Missy Elliott's next album:
"I probably won't do the whole thing 'cause I gotta get my own thing up and poppin'...I had to do partial and try to oversee it the best way I can for her. But I can't make Atlantic a ton of money and leave Mosley Music with nothing. That don't make logical sense. Missy is my sister, but I got a family: Nelly [Furtado], Keri [Hilson], One Republic. If I don't function, then they don't function and they can't get their careers off...
"These are all my people I'm putting out," he added about his label. "Up-and-coming stars that are gonna keep me laying low for a minute so I can chill out and take a vacation. I went on one for the first time in 15 years. I wanna take more. While they are working, I can chill out and collect the money. ... Well, not collect the money, just be involved as a daddy figure — 'Nah, do this. Change this' — like I used to be."
I haven't seen anything about this on The Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival website or on the swift chancellor report but The Brooklyn Paper says that the Festival is losing its current park location. A production of Macbeth has been given that slot next year.
They include Wes Jackson's view:
Festival organizers believe the move was racially motivated. "Hip hop brings a lot more brown people to this neighborhood, and people who live here are not comfortable with it," said Wes Jackson, whose Room Service Production founded the festival in 2005. "[People have told me that residents say], 'The festival should be in Commodore Barry Park between the projects and the BQE, not next to my $2.5-million condo.'"
That's a serious blow to a project that hip hop bloggers in the area rave about. Hip hop shows have enough problems without having venues stolen from an event like The Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival that from all reports was well run and was also very cool.
Pharrell Williams will be doing something or other for a planned ABC tv show called Limelight that:
revolves around prodigious students and faculty at an innovative performing-arts school in New York, where young men and women explore the combustible blend of contemporary music and dance while balancing their dreams, hopes and struggles.
One would assume something musical but who am I to presume when great Billboard writers don't say? Besides, since it's Pharrell, he really could be involved in other ways.
All I know is, that's one Southerner that's done ok!
Update:
According to Variety (and picked up by all sorts of hip hop "news" sites without attribution) Pharrell will be consulting producer drawing, in part, on his own experiences at a performing arts high school.
Andre 3000 aka Andre Benjamin has a fashion line on the way with a men's line planned for the spring and a women's line to follow.

According to Billboard, Jay-Z's Blue Magic is this year's highest debut by a rap single on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart at no. 35.
Actually the quote is:
Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, on which Jay-Z has the year's [something missing here, ed.] debut by a rap single with "Blue Magic" at No. 35.
So I'm going with "highest" until something better comes along.
They really buried that nugget way down in the top 10 article. Don't they know that Jay-Z Fever is again spreading the land?

FastCompany.com's April Joyner discusses use of the web by both marketers and fans in the Kanye vs. 50 campaign and reveals signs of change in marketing and demographics:
"There's been a change in the past couple of years. New media was the underdeveloped stepchild. Now it's first on the marketing plan," new media specialist Greg Trani, whose company The Room Service Group has worked with 50 Cent, rapper Ghostface Killah, and R&B artist T-Pain, says. "As opposed to the old media, where you pay to play, to get radio spins, the Internet's larger, it casts a larger net, it has many more niches. A blogger doesn't really care how much a song's been on the radio."
In another sign of change:
John Bartleson, vice-president of digital media for Island Def Jam, who worked with West to promote his album, is well aware of such support. "You close your eyes and envision the typical rap fan, and then you see Kanye, and they don't seem to match up. Who are the consumers? Where do they live? My answer is that they live on the Internet."
I spoke with Ms. Joyner earlier today about the launch of Global Grind. I'll update you when her piece gets posted.

Prizes include a meal with Blood Raw plus VIP status at a Blood Raw show staged in the winner's locale.

Though DanceJam, a Web 2.0 site with which MC Hammer is involved as an "advisor", still hasn't gone live you can get an early look via TechCrunch.
Actually I'm taking that on faith cause the video isn't working for me but KRON 4 covered the demo pit at TechCrunch 40 and Michael Arrington, who's an investor in DanceJam, says they got some footage.
Here's Don Dodge's description of a DanceJam demo:
DanceJam can best be described as YouTube mashed up with American Idol. Users can contribute their own dance videos to the site for others to see and vote on. The DanceJam people set up "Dance Offs" where they put two dance videos up against each other and have the user community vote for a winner. After several rounds of voting they declare a champion.
So the community contributes and rates content with recurring Dance Offs to add drama.
Kaneva has launched Dance Party 3D which seems a bit more ambitious than DanceJam.
According to the press release:
Dance Party 3D, a free, casual game...is the first virtual world-based, massive multi-player online (MMO) dance game where hundreds of thousands of people from across the globe can simultaneously bust out cool moves on the dance floor, compete and win dance battles, spin hot playlists, party at amazing clubs and even build their own rockin' 3D nightspot.
I haven't checked it out closely though I like the fact that not only does it offer dance activities but you can also design your own club and play dj. It does say you can choose facial features and skin tone, so I assume it doesn't have to be a dance world of whiteness, but I think having a more multicultural look to the avatars in the opening graphics would be a smart marketing move.
Either of these projects could do well depending on implementation and luck. We're in the midst of a serious dance boom so I think there's lots of room for unexpected growth with one or more of these dance-focused projects.

Global Grind (globalgrind.com) launched today with one of the greatest endorsements in tech blogging, attention from TechCrunch.
I'll get back to you on this one but I do want to point out that hip hop magazines and news sites that added groups of bloggers could have had a chance at coverage from high traffic blogs like TechCrunch and they passed it up with stealth launches or simple ignorance of the marketing possibilities.
It does seem like the other hip hop 2.0 projects, especially the social networks, are aware of and seeking out tech web coverage while blog-based projects have missed out. This split is possibly related to blogging being taken up by publishers who treat it as an informal content management challenge while other 2.0 projects are more fundamentally a tech challenge.

Jess Harvell is live blogging the Congressional hip hop hearings. I checked in around 12:30 or so and couldn't get sound out of the video webcast but Jess's account gives me a strong sense of gladness not to be watching that little screen.
Some excerpts:
10:29 a.m. The first 20 minutes of this thing have been one long, vigorous handjob for Bobby Rush from one Representative after another for being such a brave soul. Is this how these things normally go?
10:53 a.m. When I die, I will be forced to take notes on a congressional hearing where the opening statements never end. I just told Maura that if she hears my head hit the keyboard to come over and kick me a few times.
12:12 p.m. MTV's "stuff as much incomprehensible motion into three-hours as we possibly can" at the VMA's now makes a lot more sense, at least from a live-blogging perspective.
It sounds like a tedious show. Maybe Jay Smooth was right but mostly because this is so boring that no one will care.
But there is a revealing note about music industry execs:
12:25 p.m. Man, all these m[deleted]s are so hot to distance themselves from their hip-hop content/product or otherwise play it down that it's kind of shocking.
I guess ol' Jess is stuck in front of that monitor for the rest of the day. That's what you get for making those kinds of programming decisions!
It's really pretty today in Raleigh. Sunny and a relatively mild temperature. Think I'll go for a little walk while Jess keeps track of those hearings for us.

Miraflor saw the free show:
The venue was pretty ridiculous. Bacardi put some serious money into this - I can't emphasize that enough. There was a concert pit in front of center stage with room for a thousand+, a large VIP tent to the left of the stage, bleachers to the right, 7 or 8 bars, a food stand, 3 jumbo-tron screens, a full press tent, and a good amount of swag. I'm not sure if the BLive series is meant to be a big tax write-off by Bacardi, but they certainly poured a good amount of money for this free concert series.

IS LL COOL J GOING TO BATTLE JAY-Z?
Via illjeezy:
I don’t think anybody mentions names, but I think I smell a challenge coming down the line from Mr. Cool J. LL vs Jay-Z? That would be very interesting. Lets face it, LL has vanquished every foe he’s faced. Jay-Z has bodied almost everybody as well. Anyway, Blok TV got with LL at the AHH Fashion show during AHH Week 2007.
The seeming Jay-Z reference comes at the end of this short video and relates to LL's feeling that Jay-Z wasn't so helpful as Def Jam president & CEO with the Todd Smith release.
Eskay seems to find that a bit weak and, though LL Cool J did repeatedly express such concerns, they do seem like a stretch for the makings of a new beef-based marketing campaign.

When I read the press release from Nielsen.com I thought Hey! Nielsen was a bad idea:
"Hey! Nielsen gives lovers of pop culture an opportunity to sound off online and to make their voices heard by decision-makers," said Karen Watson, Senior Vice President of Communications at The Nielsen Company, and Executive Sponsor of Hey! Nielsen.
"If you're passionate about any aspect of the entertainment world, you will find like-minded consumers on Hey! Nielsen. We hope this will be a fun place to share opinions and discuss your favorite shows, movies and music. And because we will be providing our clients with insights from Hey! Nielsen members, joining the network is a way to let the entertainment industry know what you think."
A social network that gives me the opportunity to bond with "like-minded consumers" as we "let the entertainment industry know" what we think!
When I go to the site, Hey! Nielsen: Opinions, it doesn't seem so horribly misguided or off-putting:
Hey! Nielsen is the place to make a name for yourself while trading opinions on TV, movies, music, personalities, web sites and more.
Hey! Nielsen looks nice and combines some good ideas. Obviously it's a smart dataplay for Nielsen if the social network attracts participants. Now let's just keep the VPs away from the mic and try to remember that if you want to communicate with folks who might participate in your social network, calling them something other than consumers is a simple but effective place to start.
Since Nielsen does seem to want to push the idea that participants can have an effect on what big media makes, messaging should clearly communicate that participants are powerful partners whose actions have real effects [if that's actually the case] rather than content generators who periodically drop some feedback in the digital suggestions box by voicing an opinion or taking a poll.
Hey! Nielsen has a blog.
