Book Club: C-Murder Discusses Death Around the Corner

C-Murder - Death Around the Corner book

C-Murder - Death Around the Corner

C-Murder kicks off the Tru Conversations Hour with a series of conference calls regarding his novel, Death Around the Corner, recently released in paperback.

Cyrus A. Webb Interviews C-Murder

Tru Conversations Hour is a project of Conversations Book Club [via AllHipHop] which has worked with C-Murder in the past.  The above video in which Conversations Book Club President Cyrus A. Webb interviews C-Murder was taped in October in Jackson, MS.

What's Up With Master P as President of UDubMusic?

In the January '08 issue (p. 46), Black Enterprise is reporting that Master P is now the President of UDubMusic, the digital label of UrbanWorld Wireless.

There's hardly anything about this online.  Even finding out that UrbanWorld Wireless and UDubMusic are connected is seemingly impossible from the UrbanWorld Wireless site.

Update:
I finally clued in to searching with "udubmusic" as one word and found a couple of things.  Master P's presidency of UDubMusic was announced at least as far back as October.

Either something fell through and the Black Enterprise article was the last thing to get out due to the normal news delay in print publishing or this whole thing has been handled incredibly poorly.  Of course, it still should have gotten more attention when announced this fall.

I haven't had a chance to check it out but this video is said to be an interview at CTIA Wireless 2007 in San Francisco in October:
"Nicole Scott chats with Mike Johns from Urban World Wireless and Master P of UdubMusic"

As it turns out, the Black Enterprise article actually mispells the company names as Urban World Wireless and Udub Music.  That actually made a surprising difference for the UDubMusic search though that's primarily due to lack of online coverage and many results containing dub and music.

Season 4: When The Wire's Realness Stumbled

The Wire: The Complete Fourth Season dvd

The Wire: The Complete Fourth Season

I recently saw the 4th season of The Wire and enjoyed it greatly.  It's a wonderful show much lauded for its "realness" which is, in part, due to series creator David Simon's days as a police reporter for the Baltimore Sun.  His work on The Corner revealed his serious ability to connect research and art and The Wire took much that was learned in creating that painful show to produce a meaningful and commercially viable product.

That's pretty darn hard to do.  So the glaring "fakeness" that pervaded Season 4's portrayal of educational research was particularly disturbing though it certainly didn't undermine the show as a whole and was probably accepted by most folks as real due to the public's general misconception of such research.

Much of Season 4 focuses on the educational system and uses the twin examples of an educational research project conducted in the schools and a new teacher transitioning from another career.

The new teacher stuff is great and makes me wonder if David Simon is a fan of such education writers as Herbert Kohl and Jonathan Kozol.

But the tale of the educational research project starts with bullsh*t and uses that bullsh*t approach to fuel specific moments in the narrative in what is a dishonest manner out of keeping with David Simon's work and reputation.

Since my PhD is from the College of Education at Ohio State University, I've studied with some of the world's leading educational researchers and had peers who went on to do some serious research work in public schools.

I've also been involved with grant writing and know a bit about how that works for educational research grants.

When the educational researcher is introduced, he's the kind of guy who would be out of touch with the streets.  That's not necessarily a bad portrayal but it's combined with the claim that he got this huge grant without actually having a clue about who he was going to research.

For the everyday viewer that probably all fits together.  However, for anybody with any knowledge of how such grants work, it's obvious that this researcher would have had to have done some sort of pilot study that would have identified the population to be studied prior to applying for the grant.  He would have already been in there and would have written the grant only after doing the "what the heck am I doing here" part.

Nobody gives out that much money to people who haven't done pilot studies and nobody lets you switch gears so radically from one age group to another without a lot of explanation back at the Foundation or wherever the heck the money came from.

On a related note, if you recall the first interview in the jail where the young man wilds out and can't even comprehend the questions, you'll be remembering a moment of drastic ethical code violations that could have cost this guy the grant and given him a huge amount of bad publicity as well as likely disciplinary action from his university if such behavior was uncovered.

Social scientists are not allowed to interview subjects who have not been fully informed of what's going on and who can't show that they are informed.  Getting around that is very difficult these days and certainly the interrogation room interview was in no way acceptable to any university's review board.

For more on that topic, please see the Institutional Review Board webpages for Philadelphia's Temple University.  It's run of the mill, standard stuff for the most part and is the kind of thing fully discussed in everyone's first graduate research courses in all fields involving human research.

Basically the initial scenes with the educational researcher were completely unconvincing and inaccurate.  Yet the general public's view of academics as disconnected from reality and research as a shell game means they probably bought into these inaccuracies.

I will say the portrayals of the young researchers, who assisted the head researcher and the heart-warming cop, were well done.  There are a lot of strong young women coming through doctoral education programs who can conduct themselves successfully in multiple worlds and I was glad to see their strong characters.

I love The Wire for its truth.

I am deeply saddened by its lies.

Kim Osorio's Blog, Def Jam's Next President & the Reinscription of NY Media Hegemony

Kim Osorio shares the unedited version of her BET blog post regarding her thoughts on who might be Def Jam's next President and humorously eliminates most celebrity candidates.

This could be a great blog if she stays with it.

Checking it out also reminds me of my recognition that, even as bloggers undermine previous publishing hierarchies, the interconnection of NY blogs and websites in hip hop is reinscribing New York's hip hop media hegemony online.

It's certainly not a neat and easy process and it won't be as total as New York's post-WWII/pre-21st Century media reign but it's working surprisingly well as NY celebrity bloggers complete the love loop focusing primarily on NY bloggers and websites.

Rik Cordero on Art, Commerce & Three/21 Media

illRoots has a nice interview with Rik Cordero in which he discusses his video company, Three21 Media:

illRoots:
What do [you] think separates Three21 from any other production company out right now?

Rik Cordero:
I think what separates us is that we care and we listen. I know that sounds cliché and generic but its true. We aim to capture the human condition [whether it's]... a bunch of guys rapping about the block or a battered woman or heartfelt song about a guy who’s brother is on drugs or if its Joell with the struggles in the hood, its about capturing that humanity and listening and caring, that’s what really separates us. We take that time to figure out what the artist is about, and translating what they are feeling...

When we first started doing music videos, we were criticized that they weren’t official videos and that just motivated me to say what makes that official and where does that elitism stem from. Is it something that the public has been conditioned to or is it something that has to be cost "X" amount of dollars to be considered a video or is it art for the sake of art.

There's some interesting looking stuff in here that seems to be marred by a poor transcription.  That's unfortunate cause part of what he's getting at is how the Internet enabled his business and allowed him to maintain an artistic approach to commerce.  He also discusses his business structure which is unclear but sounds interesting.

Kanye West & Beyonce Play Connect Four

Connect Four game

Connect Four

I fully intend to do a roundup of Jay-Z rules Vegas coverage but, for the moment, I can't pass up posting a link to Kanye West's blog where he has cute pics of he and Beyonce playing Connect Four at the 40/40 Club!

That's one of the real strengths of celebrity blogging.  These pics are quick, off the cuff, intimate and unlike anything you'll pick up from Wire Image.

DanceJam to Launch in Mid-January [Maybe]

Now DanceJam is expected in mid-January!

There's nothing new in this article and no explanation for the extended delay in launching the site so there's no real reason to hold them to it if it doesn't happen.  They're lucky no one else was pursuing a similar concept.

Lil Wayne's The Leak Gets [Relatively] Minor Press

Lil Wayne - The Leak digital ep

Lil Wayne - The Leak [Digital EP]

Not much happening in new releases but Lil Wayne did put out a digital EP last week titled The Leak that is currently #31 in Amazon's MP3 Albums sales rank.

I was going to say that this release got a lot more attention from bloggers than from news sites till I discovered that by page 5 Google's blog search results are dominated by Blogger sp@m blogs!

I realize that being in Billboard and on some great blogs would be a big thrill for most musicians but, for Lil Wayne, this would be considered minor press, not that surprising for a post-Christmas release without a media campaign.

Hypebot: Warner Goes DRM-Free, Jay-Z Resigns, Online Marketing Wins, RIAA Propaganda, Shady MP3 Sites

Music industry news from Hypebot:

This may have been a holiday week, but it didn't stop a few major music industry stories from breaking...

The Warner Music family of labels (Warner, Elektra, Atlantic, Rhino and Nonesuch) started selling its catalog as DRM free mp3's on Amazon.com leaving Sony BMG the last major label group adding unpopular copy protection. A Hypebot commentary dug into what this means for the music industry and consumers.

Jay-Z announced he is leaving his executive post at Def-Jam.

A new study showed that marketing online is far more productive than TV or even print.

The RIAA appears to be feeding its own anti-piracy "news" stories to local TV.

OurDigitalMusic has a list of sites that claim to sell legal mp3 downloads cheaply but who have no deals with the major labels.
