Ethan Brown Confirms Snitch Banned in Prisons

After reading Nolan Strong's report at AllHipHop that Ethan Brown's Snitch: Informers, Cooperators & the Corruption of Justice had been banned by the Federal Bureau of Prisons, I dropped Ethan a note about the matter.

Mr. Strong quotes from what I assume is a letter to Ethan Brown from the BOP:

"'The publication has been rejected because it contains information about other Bureau of Prisons incarcerated individuals,' the letter stated. 'This information has been determined to be detrimental to the security, good order and discipline of the institution. Due to the reasons cited, the above-named publication is not suited for introduction into a correctional facility.'"

Ethan confirmed that "the word from the BOP official is that Snitch 'is not suited for introduction into a correctional facility'" and he stated:

"In Snitch I wrote about the history of the sentencing guidelines and mandatory minimums as well as specific cases involving on the record cooperation deals. So, Snitch isn't about 'exposing' informants or supporting the stop snitching ethos--therefore, I strongly disagree that the book is not appropriate for federal prisons."

SXSW: Matt Sonzala is Sick of Us "Lazy Ass Media" Folks

Matt Sonzala seems to be going through some post-SXSW angst partly in relationship to media coverage of the festival focused on celebrities:

"Every f*cking writer that hit me up about this sh*t had the same questions. They weren't asking things like "What's the deal with these Norwegian rappers you are bringing?" "Who's SouthBound and Ryno & Slim Gutta? Are they cool?" No they asked me how to get in touch with Ice Cube, Clipse and Bun B. They barely even gave a sh*t about Dizzee Rascal or Devin."

"Then I sit and read the blogs and the papers and the magazines and it's all about all the bands you would expect them to be about. It's sad, cuz when I was growing up we had about 1/10th of the magazines, 1/16th of the radio stations, no internet, no satellite radio, and I think back then more music got thru to the masses than is getting through today. You can challenge me on that if you want to, but I pay attention and all I am seeing is a bunch of copy cat lazy ass motherf*ckers all clamoring for the same thing..."

"That my friends, is my biggest beef. The lazy ass media."

Well, that should help improve future coverage!

On the one hand, I'm sympathetic.  On the other, the media's focus on the obvious isn't all that new and given the financial realities that now challenge professional media, it's only going to get worse.

And, given the fact that all the upstart bloggers who are making money have figured out that it's all about celebrity gossip, short bits about breaking news and audio/video drops, it's only going to get worse.

And, given the fact that you can't go to SXSW if you're not getting paid, unless you're paying out of pocket, the focus on things that get people paid, i.e. celebrities, will only get worse.

And, given the fact that the people Matt list don't seem to be reaching out to mid-level bloggers like myself, it's only going to get worse for them.

Honestly, anybody that thinks you can book celebrities and not-so-famous people at the same festival without the celebrities sucking all the air out of the room is setting themselves up for disappointment.  And I don't care how many bands you book, once the celebs start showing, it changes the game and SXSW has changed in that regard and Matt is part of that process.

The lesser known artists that build both online community and buzz are going to get the attention online and, to be honest, I don't see or hear anything from the artists or their people that Matt name checks in his post as deserving more attention.

He mentions Dizzee Rascal as someone that didn't get much coverage though, as you may recall, he got quite a bit when he first came through SXSW.

I've been following Dizzee Rascal, writing about him occasionally and almost always positively, posting his videos and so forth since he did his first show at SXSW, which I attended and wrote about, and I have to say that I never get any pr on him that hasn't been a generic outreach and I've seen less pr work for this visit than ever before.  The buzz has died for Dizzee, though I hope the Def Jux involvement helps, but without buzz you don't get coverage at SXSW.

I should note that being on Def Jux makes it even less likely that I'll get any kind of direct outreach regarding Dizzee.  I've given that label and that label's artists more attention than any other indie label since I started blogging over 5 years ago and they've never reached out directly though I do get on certain publicists' mailing lists.  But those lists are all managed by people to which Def Jux outsources their pr.

I should also note that as soon as news got out regarding the Dizzee Rascal/Bun B video for Where Da G's, lots of bloggers picked it up.

Hmmm, maybe dropping an embeddable video a bit earlier would have changed a few things for Dizzee's SXSW appearance?

Nobody can count on getting online attention just for putting in work, especially offline work.  You've got to put in the right work.  Today that means doing things like dropping cool videos and being in touch with folks.  But to expect bloggers to play Alan Lomax and search out folks they're not hearing about is wishful thinking.

I posted the K-Rino video Matt dropped at Houston So Real over at Hip Hop Logic and at VidRap but do you think anybody's going to even say anything if I didn't point that out?

Will they say anything now?

Will K-Rino's people start sending me pr material?

Will doing that help me fund a future visit to SXSW?

No, probably not, no, no.

But I'm glad I posted that video cause it's meaningful.

I'll be honest, I've had some limited contact with Matt from a distance and it's all been positive.

But I've posted links to his blog lots of times and do I get any mentions on his blog?  Do I get any email about what he's up to?  Does he send me any videos, even via a generic email list, of artists that he's repping?

No on all accounts.

Love is at least a two way street but I don't need love from artists and their people.

I need acknowledgement.  I need information.  I need videos.

Plus I need a reason to give a damn.

And just because you do something cool in public doesn't mean that folks are going to pick up on it or care.

I've experienced that plenty of times at ProHipHop when I've done something I consider special and had no one seem to even notice.  I even had a former writer scoff when I referred to "my work at ProHipHop" which includes things like exposing lies from people's heroes, sharing useful information for up and comers and making strong political statements that work against my bottom line.

So I have to accept that the things I do to make money, all involving celebrity coverage, have obscured the more meaningful things I do at ProHipHop.

I've also boosted countless blogs and blogger project for years.  But when I did an Ebay auction to try to make some much-needed cash off some hip hop domains did any of those people link to me even after I made a separate post asking for support?

No.  And after healing my wounds, I had to accept that my needs did not catch their attention in a meaningful manner.  I guess I should have reached out individually but I was as hurt and surprised by the lack of blogger support as Matt seems to be by his recent SXSW media experience.

So if you want to get that attention for yourself or others, pay attention to other people's needs, not your own, and reach out in a manner to which they're receptive.

And if you invite a celebrity to your party and everybody keeps paying more attention to them than to you and your buddies and that hurts your feelings, maybe you shouldn't invite the celebrity next time.

But we all know that next year will bring more celebrities to SXSW and less coverage of folks who don't have considerable buzz going in.

And anybody that doesn't see that coming is playing themselves, no matter how right on and heart felt their feelings about the situation might be.

Spinlets Widget for The Pack's In My Car

Spinlets Widget for The Pack's Standing In My Car

Just found out about the widget site Spinlets via a publicist promoting Dolla's Spinlets widget.

I went with The Pack's Standing In My Car because Dolla's Who The F*ck Is That drops both the F-word and the N-bomb to excess.  Not a real problem for me in his case but it just doesn't fit ProHipHop's inching progress towards mainstream values.  Of course, The Pack ain't no saints.

But I like both songs just fine.

Over at VidRap:
Dolla f/T-Pain & Tay Dizm - Who The F*ck Is That
The Pack - In My Car

Singles: Lil Mama's Shawty Get Loose #19

It's mostly status quo in the top 10 on the Hot 100 singles chart but Lil Mama's Shawty Get Loose "makes the biggest jump on the Hot 100 this year with a 92-19 explosion. The track...sold 72,000 downloads this week, good enough for a No. 9 debut on Hot Digital Songs."

Top 10 Singles on the Hot 100:

1. Usher - Love in This Club feat. Young Jeezy
2. Chris Brown - With You
3. Flo Rida - Low feat. T-Pain
4. Sara Bareilles - Love Song
5. Rihanna - Don't Stop the Music
6. Jordin Sparks - No Air feat. Chris Brown
7. Ray J & Yung Berg - Sexy Can I
8. Leona Lewis - Bleeding Love
9. Timbaland - Apologize feat. OneRepublic
10. Lupe Fiasco - Superstar feat. Matthew Santos

Lil Wayne has the "second best debut of his career as a lead artist" as Lollipop debuts at no. 56 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop songs chart.

Jay-Z: Self-Valuation Too High? What Happened to Water?

I hesitated to post this Page 6 rumor about Jay-Z asking for too much for his own label but Rizoh did, so, according to an "insider":

"He wants a label to give him $100 million for the Carter Music Group and provide for overhead, development and digital investment. It's crazy. He wants the labels to basically be his venture capital fund — but unlike a venture cap, they won't get 50 percent. This is not the '90s anymore."

Hey, remember when Jay-Z made his deal with the U.N. to promote his tour and album if he signed off on water as an issue of concern?

At least Russell Simmons, who I think got Jay-Z started on this one, stayed with the issue.

ProHipHop Network: More Intrusive Ads, Ad Network Trials

A heads up for folks who've been around for awhile.  Expect more intrusive ads in the near future.

I'm just hitting one of those points where I have to step this up or reconsider the existence of this project.

I've also been accepted to a number of ad networks and will be experimenting with the possibilities so nothing wild and crazy should happen but shifts will occur cause somebody's got to cover the cost of free.

Update:
How ridiculous is being apologetic for trying to do ok financially, I'm not talking about caking here, when I'm writing about hip hop business?

Now where did I put that f*cking backpack?

Update 2:
But I promise I won't knowingly run Ann Coulter ads or ads featuring bugs crawling around cause they both creep me out totally.

Young Buck: Eating Off Shows, Not Royalty Checks [?]

Young Buck drops a rather shocking revelation, he hasn't gotten any royalty checks since signing with G-Unit!

He doesn't say anybody's ripping him off but he does say this:

"A lot of times a lot of artists don’t recoup off of albums so a lot of times they never get to see the backend from that project. I’m the only artist on G-Unit that ever recouped off of an album meaning I went off on this "Buck The World" project not owing Interscope and G-Unit shit, I can say that much. I’m still waiting on a royalty check period, I never seen a royalty check since I’ve been signed with G-Unit. So hell yeah I’ll tell you one damn thing the show money is that good. I’ve never in my career cashed a royalty check, how you like that?"

Check out the article for more on his relationship with Jimmy Iovine, etc. but the biggest point I'm taking is that "the show money is that good".

This is strong support for the necessity of building one's live game as an artist and also suggests that other hip hop businesses would be making a big mistake by avoiding live events.

Via Nah Right Lite.

Update:
A bunch of hip hop news sites all say they've heard from Sha Money XL, Young Buck's Manager, or his publicist and that he's saying it's all untrue.  That Young Buck has received over $10 million in royalties.

You can search through the Google results for yourself and decide who received it and who just cut and pasted it and claimed they received it.

Yada yada.  Yo Raps, who ran the interview linked above, is based in Germany and doesn't have a direct email on their site.

Wits was a member of Hustle Squad DJs, Bum Squad DJZ, Team Afficial, as well as being a Justo Mixtape All-Star. Featured on the nationally broadcast Music Choice network, his weekly mixshow was heard by up to 35 million listeners, not to mention his numerous creative and unique "mixtapes" that garnered the respect of mixtape connoisseur's around the United States.  His dedication and creativity won him the honor of being nominated "Best New Mixtape DJ" at the 10th Annual Justo's Mixtape Awards at the end of 2006."

Quick Tip: On Topic Promoting Via Blog Comments

Though I closed ProHipHop's comments a while back, I do think comments are a big part of the blogging scene and a fair way to promote oneself with on topic responses to posts, though saying "nice blog" and then suggesting we check out your site isn't really an on topic comment.

But when you're getting covered in a blog post, that's a great opportunity to add a bit of extra information or just say hi.  It lets people know you're paying attention and often provides an opportunity to build on the moment.

Over at the softly launching Ill Moves, I posted some hip hop dance links including one to Planet B-Boy which should be a cool documentary on the worldwide b-boy scene.

When somebody promoting the movie dropped the U.S. release dates in the comments, I thought, "cool, they're paying attention."  But check the comment on the links post and consider how much stronger this comment would have been with a quick line or two like:

"Hey, thanks for the link.  Just want you to know about the..."

Which then leads directly into the impersonal but on topic information that was dropped.

Though it may seem minor, such a touch let's the blogger know that you're not totally using them to your own advantage.

Here's what's probably happening on the other end.  Some overworked publicist or somebody doing the work of a publicist is using Google and other such means to find links related to Planet B-Boy and then quickly cutting and pasting in the release dates in the comments.

That person probably has too much to do and is trying to be as efficient as possible at getting out the word while intending nothing negative at all.  That person is also probably too busy to have considered long term blogger relationships but if s/he were, I'd suggest simply preparing a couple of lines like the above that can be quickly and easily altered as well as cut and pasted with the schedule.

In the old days, such a move would appear a bit perfunctory but nowadays, given the emergence of text messaging and other short and simple communication means, one can actually appear quite engaged with a simple line or two prefacing the impersonal information that you're trying to move.

So why not just try saying thanks for the coverage before making your publicity move.  Some folks won't care.  Some folks will.  Either way, you're establishing an approach to publicity that acknowledges even limited relationship and builds for the long term.

And long term building that connects with others is what leads to success.

And, yes, I'm still working on that one but I'm improving!

YouTube Video Awards: Vote Trunk Boiz, Plus: Soulja Boy & Evan Bernard

YouTube is in the final days (through Wednesday) of voting for the 2007 Video Awards and there's an interesting selection of music videos including Tay Sunday's Chocolate Rain and the Harmonica and Beatbox guy.

However I was most pleasantly surprised to find the first version of the Trunk Boiz' Scraper Bike video included because I just love that video.

So consider voting for the Trunk Boiz.  They're not going to win but that's a video worth supporting.

Surprise Update:
I finally got around to checking out the other categories and discovered two interesting hip hop videos.  Soulja Boy's How to Crank That is a contestant in the Instructional category while Evan Bernard's very cool POUND shows up in the Short Film category.

Russell Simmons' Argyle Culture Ads: Ok Ads, Sucky Clothes

Wooohah has some ad scans of Russell Simmons' Argyle Culture line that seem to communicate where they're coming from pretty well though I actually like this pic of Myorr Janha, VP of marketing and public relations quite a bit more.  However I'm not a good judge of Simmons' impact as a model of his own clothes.

Russell is pushing the "urban graduate" concept which is a really nice, creative term for a demographic whether real or imagined.

I have a lot of issues with Russell Simmons in relationship to the politics, spirituality and money triangle but I'd tell you I hate these clothes even if I really dug the guy.  Most of this kind of thing is just recycling of stuff that was popular years ago and I just don't want to see it anymore.

Polo sucks too.  Really ugly clothes like most preppy wear.

But if you like that kind of thing, knock yourself out.

More pics of various kinds can be seen at the official Argyle Culture website though it appears to still be under construction.

Atmosphere Withholds Review Copies, Upsets Reviewers

Atmosphere - When Life Gives You Lemons cd

Atmosphere - When Life Gives You Lemons

Atmosphere is holding listening sessions rather than sending out advance copies of the upcoming When Life Gives You Lemons in order to cut down on bootlegging and heighten anticipation.  It's basically an experiment that will be worth following and it's already alienated some reviewers.

Slug had some interesting comments at the New York listening session:

"It means a lot to me that you all came down...I just heard that there were certain people who—when they found out that we weren't giving out advanced copies—took offense and told us to take them off the label's mailing list. That's cool, but it's one thing to not want to waste your time with this, and it's another to boldly be like, 'F*ck you for doing it this way.' That's pretty self-absorbed."

Considering that reviewers seem to be taking all the other tricks of limiting bootlegs in stride, such as people speaking over the music or shouting out periodically, that make it impossible to actually listen to the music, it says a lot that this tactic really got to some of them.  I would be more concerned that you're limiting your reviews to the folks that can show up to certain locations but I guess that turns it into focusing on media with the biggest reach prior to release.

Slug made an interesting point about his motivation:

"I'm not so worried about losing sales and downloads...If people are going to download the record, they'll just do it the day after it comes out. For me it's more about the anticipation. A lot of my friends put out records, and by the time the record actually drops and they go on tour, everybody is already sick of it."

So maybe there's some positive aspects to this approach for reviewers who are not all hung up on being the first to hear a rap track obscured by shoutouts and talking.

And one can always take the Maxim route, which some say is partly due to a climate in which folks aren't sending out review copies, and officially fake the listening part.

Lincoln Navigator Print Ad Featuring Common

Wooohah offers a glimpse of the print ads featuring Common for the Lincoln Navigator though it appears to be missing any reference to the car.  I'm assuming it's a partial scan but it gives one a sense of where they're going with this campaign in keeping with these suddenly hopeful times.

Barack Obama: Grassroots Machine, Smart Speechwriter

Rolling Stone takes a look at the Barack Obama machine, a campaign organization that's strongly grassroots driven and draws on both Obama's history and training as a community organizer as well as the bottom-up power of the Internet.

I hadn't realized how much stronger Obama's campaign organizing has been than Hillary Clinton's until I read this Frank Rich piece.  The Rolling Stone article breaks down how that came about.

Apparently the Obama campaign hasn't trumpeted their use of the Internet in order not to be lumped in with Howard Dean but they've done a great job of working with folks who got things going on their own and with tying together online support with offline organizing.

On a related note, Jon Favreau is Obama's chief speechwriter and he's done quite a fine job.  Good reminder that even great speechifying is generally a team effort.

Notorious: It's Getting Boring Already

The NY Times is doing some stuff on Notorious, the Biggie Smalls movie in progress that we get to hear about every inch of the way.

They've got an audition video that doesn't link through and a slide show that works but both are from October which explains why they're so disappointingly familiar.

But the best part isn't really about Biggie at all:
"Failure could expose the studio to ridicule — pop-culture aficionados have already been sniping on the Internet — from a musical culture that has made a religion of credibility."

Using phrases like "pop-culture aficionados" when you're referring to bloggers and hip hop fans is a good way to draw ridicule but the religious claim is dead on.

Hip hop has a religion of credibility that's reaped more fakers than any other musical genre of which I'm aware but we're pretty much par for the course for religious movements.

And that's good business!
