Mashable Interviews Chamillionaire on the Digital Game

Mashable's Pete Cashmore interviews Chamillionaire and one can get a nice sense of Chamillionaire's strategic smarts.

Most of the interview is focused on the digital world and Chamillionaire says he studied that world as seriously as he studied mixtapes and the indie music scene.  Now he's studying stocks.

In describing his choice of social networks for marketing, Chamillionaire says he goes where the fans go:

"It's not even about me. I go to what they want."

Unfortunately Cashmore doesn't follow-up on Chamillionaire's statement that now folks are starting their own networks and moving away from the biggies like MySpace.  I'd love to hear Chamillionaire's thoughts on addressing that situation as a marketer.  I'm curious if he has some ideas beyond just following suit and starting your own.

Chamillionaire gets into a concern he has about how digital downloads are tracked and a Mashable writer describes it this way in the post:

"Chamillionaire also talks about how the music industry needs new metrics to determine what’s popular, since album sales are meaningless in the world of a la carte purchases via iTunes."

Actually Chamillionaire states that he's concerned that someone could download 9 of an album's 10 tracks individually from iTunes and it doesn't count as an album sale.  Well, they didn't buy the album and the iTunes downloads have already been included in all the relevant charts including the main singles charts.  So it's an interesting idea but determining what's popular in terms of downloads is well in hand and Chamillionaire certainly got chart credit for all those downloads.

But Chamillionaire's clearly puzzling out the details and thinking everything through in a serious manner that's impressing folks and makes him look quite solid going forward.

In The Shadow Of An Icon: Honoring Tupac Shakur

In The Shadow Of An Icon cd

In The Shadow Of An Icon

In The Shadow Of An Icon is a compilation album released by Thug Life Army Records featuring a wide range of artists who feel the influence of Tupac Shakur.

However the album actually has no Tupac Shakur tracks though Tupac is featured in the cover art shown above.  The question of how one markets a product that connects to such an iconic figure without having a contribution from that icon is interesting to consider and my own thoughts start with ideas for the album cover art that could somehow forefront the artists while indicating the presence of Tupac's spirit.

If such a marketing puzzle interests you, you may also enjoy considering the documentary Kurt Cobain: About A Son which is built on audio interviews but contains no film footage of Cobain or music by his band Nirvana.  It's a surprisingly effective documentary from AJ Schnack that can also be taken as an example of creatively taking an alternate route.

Elf Yourself's Jason Zada on Football Resurrected

Adweek profiles Jason Zada who created:

"last summer's 'Football resurrected' campaign for 2K Sports' All Pro Football 2K8 video game. For it, Zada, 34, directed hip-hop legends for online, TV, print and outdoor content. 'I was a little white kid breakdancing in the early '80s and I got to shoot and direct Rakim and Chali 2NA,' says Zada, a huge hip-hop fan and avid gamer."

Zada seems to be best know for the Elf Yourself campaign for OfficeMax.

I Love Money: Reality TV Gets Real

VH1's announcement of I Love Money, a reality tv show that gathers together folks from Rock of Love, I Love New York and Flavor of Love, finally presents an honest reality series to the American public.

What's weird is that this is being labeled a celebreality series when the participants only claim to fame is being in a reality series featuring a celebrity.

More importantly, the return of such celebreals raises the question:
Can zombies eating zombie brains result in mad cow disease?

VH1 begins to unveil the zombies in question.

Little Brother's And Justus For All Upgrades Mixtape

Little Brother - And Justus For All cd

Little Brother - And Justus For All

Little Brother's And Justus For All is due June 3rd from Hall of Justus.

Rizoh did a background check:

"Yesterday, some of you were confused (albeit excited) about this new Little Brother CD. So, I got in touch with Phonte to find out exactly what this is.

Tay says, 'It's the mixtape from last year mastered, minus the drops and skits, with a few new tracks included.'

This one's definitely going to be a keeper, because I remember and justus for all being better than some people's album."

I've actually wondered why we haven't seen more albums emerging from the mixtape circuit as mixtapes themselves become more legit.  It will be interesting to see how And Justus For All does though it's off to a disappointing launch with that album cover and the straight reuse of the mixtape's title.

Soulja Boy's One-Hit Wonder Label: Does It Matter?

At the end of the day, people believe whatever the heck they want to believe.  That's why we're all basically committed to a path of world destruction.

For Soulja Boy the stakes aren't quite that high but, despite Souljaboytellem.com going gold, Soulja Boy is stuck with the one-hit wonder label attached to his brand until he has another big hit.

Of course, many musicians have trials and tribulations around their sophomore release and all pop stars have to get a second hit to keep going.  When that progress falters, rising stars may see their fanbase dwindle as they suddenly become one hit wonders on the real.  Once so labeled, the drive for new fans becomes seriously hindered as antibuzz agents accumulate.

But it may well be that all the labels and criticism won't hinder and might even help Soulja Boy due to the stark polarization of Soulja Boy lovers and haters that is often marked by a generational divide.

Some of this has been obvious but it wasn't until the Jay-Z & basketball stars press event that I realized that we're not just talking about fans and foes, we're talking about demographics that exist in entirely different worlds.

Obviously there's plenty of crossover between Jay-Z fans and Soulja Boy fans, whether folks want to acknowledge that or not, but it seems pretty clear that Soulja Boy's youthful following has emerged in a world in which Jay-Z is an old man that is respected by old people.  They might dig him in the way they might dig other aging world class stars but he's not one of them and has no relationship to their lives in the way that so many 20-somethings still seem to feel.

Unless you're on a kneejerk mission through life, you know what I'm talking about.

Jay-Z can't touch Soulja Boy because Soulja Boy's core fans don't care about Jay-Z.  And that's why there won't be a real beef or real battle no matter what Soulja Boy says about these guys cause he's the future and they're the past, at least within the youthful world in which he's embedded.

Unless he doesn't get another big hit.  With the bar so high, given that Souljaboytellem.com went gold and the single, Crank That (Soulja Boy), spent 12 weeks in the top 10 in '07 with a brief return in '08, Soulja Boy has quite a challenge ahead.
