Mama Clothing & Cash Capital Clothing Sponsor Mixtapes

married to the hustle mixtape

Married To The Hustle Mixtape Hosted by EyeASage

Straight up, I've got just a few minutes here and so I'm assuming that Mama Clothing is, in fact, a fashion related enterprise though it could be a gang [of fashionistas]  from what I see!

It's kind of hard to tell quickly from their website, but they've sponsored a mixtape hosted by EyeASage called Married To The Hustle.

[Via FOBBdeep.]

Cash Capital Clothing is sponsoring a mixtape hosted by Sheek Louch and put out by DJ Lady T of B-eZ Records.

Don't have a link for B-eZ or a name for the mixtape and it looks like this is an offline release only.  I'll update if I get more on that.

MusicWerks: Another Great Beginning Ruined

I actually have a lot of positive things to write about but wasn't coming back till later.  However I was very interested in the news about MusicWerks:

"Music industry veteran Edward "Eddie F" Ferrell has joined forces with fellow music mogul Andre Harrell to launch MusicWerks.com, a new online music group.  The site will be available as a vehicle to align artists, song writers, producers, bands and independent labels with resources and interactive services needed to achieve success in the music business."

But when I went to the MusicWerks Label Group site they wouldn't let me look at the stupid site without making me register though you can fake the registration and take a look for yourself.

Requiring registration to view a site is really, really dumb.

And if you don't know why,
then your site deserves to die.

Back on the positive with some news about sites that are doing smart things after a much needed nap.  Or maybe tomorrow.  We'll see.

Ciara's Dancer Auditions Now in Progress

Ciara's holding auditions for unsigned dancers for work related to her next album.  Auditions began today in Atlanta and continue in Miami, New York and North Hollywood.

This is a good look if the dancers are getting pro contracts.

It's also a great way for Ciara to publicize her upcoming album, though no title or release date is mentioned in the press release or YouTube video.

Plus it's a nice boost for the dance studios where the auditions are taking place.

Singles: Flo Rida #1, Snoop Dogg #7, Webbie f/Lil' Boosie & Lil' Phat #10

Flo Rida's Low featuring T-Pain enters week 9 at the top of the Hot 100 singles chart.

Webbie's Independent featuring Lil' Boosie & Lil' Phat joins the top 10 at no. 10.  Though you can take certain lines certain ways, overall this is one of the few hip hop singles and videos I can think of that shows respect for women without presenting them as female pimps, idealized queens or sentimental memories.

Top 10 Singles on the Hot 100:

1. Flo Rida - Low feat. T-Pain
2. Chris Brown - With You
3. Rihanna - Don't Stop the Music
4. Alicia Keys - No One
5. Sara Bareilles - Love Song
6. Timbaland - Apologize feat. OneRepublic
7. Snoop Dogg - Sensual Seduction
8. Sean Kingston - Take You There
9. Buckcherry - Sorry
10. Webbie - Independent feat. Lil' Boosie & Lil' Phat

Amy Winehouse's You Know I'm No Good featuring Ghostface Killah returns to no. 77 breaking its previous high mark at no. 78 almost a year ago.

Over at Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs the top debut is Birdman's 100 Million featuring Rick Ross, Dre, Young Jeezy and Lil Wayne at no. 77.

Plus, it's getting kind of g on Hot Country Songs with Rodney Atkins' Cleaning This Gun (Come on in Boy) at no. 1.

?uestlove on Music, Business, Politics & His Next Movie

The Independent Weekly, out of Durham, NC, has a great interview by Derek Jennings with ?uestlove who's in town tonight for Hip-Hop Sampling Soul with 9th Wonder and Mark Anthony Neal who teaches in Duke University's Women's Studies program.

Duke's whitey white but they have some serious black academics and students over there and the University does support Black History Month with some great programming.

?uestlove drops a lot of beautiful musical and political knowledge and experience, so do check the extended interview, but here's some business bits.

?uestlove on Okayplayer.com and thinking long-term:

"One of the reasons I created okayplayer.com was to be sort of a life raft or safety zone, just in case there was some sort of tsunami in the future. A lot of folks, especially in hip hop, think in the near-term. Most think, "I'ma tour from May to August ... after that, I don't know what I'll do." I credit Chuck D [of Public Enemy] for giving me that long-term outlook. He'd say, back in the '90s, "What do you see yourself doing in 2011?" He was thinking in decades instead of years."

On working in the mainstream music industry:

"I never saw the old system of selling records as a way to provide any type of survival or career sustenance. And I see it now as simply a way to promote the group. If there's a way to let three million people know that a Roots album is coming out on April 29 without going through all of this, I'm all for it. But for now, this is what we have to work with; this system that has robbed, stolen from and used up our artists for the last 100 years..."

"I'm not particularly saddened now that the bottom is falling out...But it does affect us, slightly, and I'll tell you how. You know that The Roots have never really lived off of record sales...other acts are starting to tour more, kind of infringing on this live show playing field that we've more or less had to ourselves for 16 years. So the game—circa late '07, now that we see all these other cats in our lane—is to think, "Hey, don't we normally do Howard University around this time of year?" and actually call them up. Because there's more competition now. Between '92 and '06, we were just about the only option. So I look at it as us having to go to Plan C. We're Will Smith in the back of the taxi, tryna figure out that Rubik's Cube."

On success and realness in the rap game:

"The thing I want people to know, the reason I'm so open on okayplayer about my personal life, is just to let people know that you don't need some kind of hyperbolic, over-inflated existence to survive in hip hop..."

"I think it's possible for an underground emcee, if he's hustling, to make around $200,000-$300,000 a year. An unsigned rapper may be able to pull down around $1,500 per week. If a manager of an establishment can make and survive off of that kind of money, so can you. But if you're making $1,500 per week and you want a Bentley coupe, then that's different. You've got a problem."

"It says a lot about our perspective when we can view a doctor as a success pulling down around $300,000 but we see the rapper making the same money as a failure. That's why I reveal all of the details of my life on my site, in interviews, etc., even to the level of why a muhf*cka can't have a successful relationship and a career. That's what I see as realness."

If you're serious about a career in music, be sure to check for ?uestlove's thoughts on building a musical movement involving other artists as a conscious process.

Plus, ?uestlove's down with Obama, sick of Reagonomics and says he's "working on a film project...starring Sam Jackson and Bernie Mac. It's a musical film by Malcolm Lee (The Best Man, Roll Bounce). Since it's a musical film, I won't be straying too far afield in terms of my role."

Big ups to ?uestlove for his honesty and his ability to build in a positive manner.  We need a lot more of that in hip hop music and business.

VidRap's Back in Action

I'm really happy to finally be getting VidRap back in action.

If you've got embeddable rap videos to promote, please drop a link to me at:
hiphoppress(at)netweed(dot)com

Or hit me up at YouTube:
http://youtube.com/prohiphop

I generally post only songs, not interviews, so keep that in mind.

I'm going to drop five a day till I get caught up starting with stuff people send me then a combination of big names plus interesting videos found on other blogs.  Gotta drop the big names cause it helps build traffic but that's not where my heart is.

YouTube's backend is down so I'll check email there starting tomorrow since I posted five videos today including the first video from India that I've gotten up:
D'Noax f/Graffiti - They See (Desi) Revolution

Seeing the Graffiti dance crew makes me wish I had time to get Ill Moves going but I'm focusing on what not to do for awhile before I start adding to my to do list.

I like all five of the videos I posted for one reason or another but I'm wishing the best for Joell Ortiz and, with this being ProHipHop's make or break year, I'm feeling L.E.P./Bogus Boyz- If Rap Don't Work for a number of reasons.

But I'll have to save that backstory for my memoirs.

Let's keep building y'all.

SXSW Film Festival: Nerdcore Rising & Beautiful Losers

Though this year's SXSW Music Festival should be chockfull of hip hop, the Film Festival seems to have only a couple of related films but they're both world premieres.

Nerdcore Rising, directed by Negin Farsad, focuses on the "sociological phenomenon" of nerdcore hip hop.

Peep the Nerdcore Rising trailer.

Beautiful Losers, with trailer on the home page, is only somewhat related from what I can tell though it sounds like a cool documentary.

The Beautiful Losers press release mentions hip hop but I think that's the Shephard Fairey connection about which I remain unconvinced.  The DIY element seems more to the point than the "losers" label, especially given that folks like Fairey and Mike Mills would be considered winners in most people's eyes.

On a side note:
Matt So Surreal, who's now part of the SXSW crew, remembers his first SXSW.

TVT Records Bankruptcy: NY Times Bits, Trent Reznor Happy, Full Story Unlikely To Emerge

I'm hearing a lot of bad things about folks in power at TVT Records but the way most of those complaints get aired it's hard to know what's really up.  According to the NY Times, TVT did file for bankruptcy yesterday, Steve Gottlieb says they've fired around 20 people or half their staff and that suing Slip-N-Slide was probably a bad move.

The NY Times does have one positive note about Gottlieb:

"The bankruptcy comes as an unexpected turn for Mr. Gottlieb, long viewed as an advocate for independent labels in their competition for talent and market share against the four global corporations that dominate the recording industry.  Mr. Gottlieb helped start a trade group in 2005 to organize the independents’ effort to obtain, for instance, more lucrative terms from digital music services that sell their music."

Currently Trent Reznor has a post on the Nine Inch Nails site that says simply:

"Not ALL news about the music industry is bad these days."

It links through to the news at AllHipHop where I'm pretty sure the story originally broke.

Trent's post currently has 1340 comments many of which seem confused or off-topic in the way these popular comments scenes become.  I tend to side with artists but knowing that Trent thinks this is good news doesn't tell us much.

I've noticed folks mentioning Lil Jon's displeasure at the label without pointing out that he stayed with them in the end.  Some of the comments I've seen elsewhere focus on d*cklike individuals at TVT.

Hard to say what's distinctive to TVT, what's a reminder that the music industry is shady and what's just another example of the fact that d*cklike individuals are randomly distributed throughout society, though they do tend to cluster around money and power.  In the end, most of the people who really know will keep it to themselves, drop something anonymously that can't be evaluated or make an unclear comment in passing.

I do know that I've gotten my first email update from a publicist leaving the company.  I wished him well and hope to hear good things from him soon.

Beyond that, we may know someday what the full TVT story is but we probably won't cause nobody really cares about the details when all is said and done.  They just need to air their feelings or are looking for some entertainment.

Ok, check you later.  I've got to get back to the Britney Channel.  I hear they're doing a special on K-Fed!

Snoop Dogg Commercial for Orange Mobile

Snoop Dogg Orange Commercial

This Snoop Dogg commercial for UK-based mobile company Orange is pretty darn funny.

The commercial is being played in theaters with the tag line:
"Don't let a mobile phone ruin your movie. Please turn it off."

Surprisingly, the white exec gets most of the good lines and I had totally forgotten that Snoop had played Huggy Bear.

On a side note, even if Snoop's opening rap is a parody, the Cristal reference is yet another blow to the idea of a successful Cristal boycott.

D-Nice Journal Moves, Launches Photo Gallery

The D-Nice Journal has moved and photographer D-Nice has launched an online gallery.

There's not much up at the moment but he's got a lot of great photos and I expect it will get rich with content in due time.  The new blog has a nice new look as well.

Not to give D-Nice a hard time at all but I would suggest using Feedburner for all feed services, that way you can keep all your subscribers without their having to switch over manually to a new feed.

I could have easily missed the We Have Moved post and not caught on for quite a while given that this isn't a high volume blog.  I've lost touch with blogs that I like for months at a time in such situations so I'm glad I caught this post.

Again, no disrespect, just some blogger details that can help maintain continuity for your fans who are most likely consuming quite a bit of online media these days.

Update:
D-Nice is nice!  He thanked me for some additional observations but I thought I'd leave up the Feedburner comment because that really does make it easy to move without having so many details with which to deal.

Danny Simmons & Floyd Hughes' Graphic Novel '85

Danny Simmons & Floyd Hughes - '85 graphic novel

Danny Simmons & Floyd Hughes - '85

I'm not so interested in covering the business activities of the families of rappers or hip hop business people which is why I've generally ignored Rev Run's little cash cows, though they're off to an impressive start.  However Russell Simmons' big brother Danny Simmons, along with artist Floyd Hughes, has released a graphic novel '85, based on his novel Three Days As The Crow Flies, that takes place in a scene that has long held my interest from a distance, first of space, then of time.

Downtown 81 starring Jean-Michel Basquiat dvd

Downtown 81 starring Jean-Michel Basquiat

Though '85 doesn't sound like it has any hip hop focus per se, that was a key time for crossover activity between the hip hop scene and the East Village art scene.  The biggest artists associated with graffiti, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring, did not have a significant association with hip hop but traditional graf artists did briefly crash the gallery system and a few went on to build significant bodies of work within that system.

Which reminds me that I need to move Downtown 81 further up my Netflix queue.

TVT Records Bankruptcy: Steve Gottlieb Talks to Billboard

Steve Gottlieb says: "This is not the end of TVT."

Gottlieb also says TVT Music Publishing will not be closed.

It's unclear what will happen to Lil Jon's Crunk Rock but "a source close to the situation" revealed that Pitbull's single Anthem may get worked to radio and the video has been shot plus Ying Yang Twins have a single, Drop, out on iTunes.

A source also says:
"Yo Gotti is a prime candidate as a free agent to go...He's done his part as an artist, and although he's a little under the radar and people in New York don't know him that well, other majors like maybe Def Jam or Universal, whom he had a previous deal with, might want to pick him up."

Mr. or Ms. "a source" revealed that TVT Music Publishing:
"hasn't had layoffs...People have left and they haven't hired new replacements, but everyone I know in publishing as of yesterday is still working. Although, the people still remaining are just there to fill orders and deal with overdue accounts payable."

Best of luck everybody.  Start your blog now rather than later!

Jay-Z's Still Reppin' the Cristal Boycott!!!

I swear I did not know that Jay-Z was still acting like his Cristal boycott was effective when I gathered some of the evidence for its failure.

But while looking for some info related to the Armand disaster, I came upon this great recent coverage:

"A year and a half after Jay-Z called for a boycott of Cristal, the luxury brand produced by maker Louis Roederer, 'I guarantee they got what they wanted,' he said.

The rap megastar told Vegas Confidential on Sunday that Cristal's business in the rap and hip-hop community 'is definitely not where it was. Drastically. They really don't want our business.'...

Stung by what he considered racism, Jay-Z has replaced Cristal in his three upscale 40/40 Clubs with Armand de Brignac's Ace of Spades, Dom Perignon and Krug."

I guess that math works if you leave P Diddy out of the equation.

Update:
Since the Cristal boycott evoked a lot of emotional response and support at the time, I should point out that I supported the boycott when Eskay originally called it.  I also made some quite obvious suggestions to make the boycott effective rather than symbolic and was quite disappointed when Jay-Z immediately stepped back from an actual leadership role by not following through with promised interviews to the media [not just bloggers].

At the end of the day, Jay-Z is much more Michael Jordan than Barack Obama.  If that's not clear enough, I feel that his actions have generally showed us that, though he can be quite inspiring in his own way, he is not a political leader and hoping for Jay-Z to play that role effectively will only lead to disappointment.

Brett Berish & Armand's Ace of Spades at Jay-Z & Lebron James' Two Kings Dinner

I wasn't planning on covering Jay-Z and Lebron James' Two Kings [Marketing Lovefest] Dinner, though there's much worth considering there, until I scrolled down to the 7th photo and saw Jay-Z and Steve Stoute with bottles of Armand de Brignac and that unmistakable Ace of Spades label.

It is a lovely bottle.

I wonder what Steve Stoute thinks of being connected to the Armand de Brignac charade.  They must be getting well-paid at this point because risking your own brand in this manner for an overpriced nonvintage blend is not a good look.

And here's Armand de Brignac CEO Brett Berish on the red carpet with an unidentified female in front of an impressive array of sponsors officially associated with either Jay-Z or Lebron James:

"Brett Berish, Armand CEO...in attendance when Doublemint Gum presented the 2nd annual Jay-Z and LeBron James' Two Kings Dinner...a private "power dinner" consisting of a veritable who's who in the entertainment and sports industries, including many of the CEO's and CMO's from Fortune 500 companies who were in town for the NBA All-Star Weekend. The event was also made possible by support from Sprite and MSN. Following the exclusive dinner, guests were joined by 500 stars and athletes at the Two Kings After-Party at the same location. DJ stylings by DJ Clark Kent and Mick Boogie."

I mentioned in passing that Berish managed to get me on the phone back in the fall and literally dropped all the soundbites that I'd read in the news months before.

He also fronted like he was previously unfamiliar with ProHipHop until happening to run into my coverage, even though everybody else paying attention caught my posts early on due to the fact that for awhile I had top Google placement on most relevant search terms.  I seriously wanted to ask him, "don't you ever Google yourself or your company?"

But why force the man to be associated with further lies when he's just trying to sell some champagne?

MerchDirect's ODB Store Open for Business

As has been previously reported on many hip hop sites, the estate of Russell Jones, more widely known as Wu-Tang Clan member ODB, has entered into an official relationship with MerchDirect to create an online ODB store that recently opened for business.

What I hadn't realized at the time, until hearing from their publicist, is that this is the sole official outlet for ODB merch and that entering this relationship is part of the estate's plans to undermine the wide range of unofficial outlets capitalizing on ODB's passing.

I especially like the allover pattern hoodie that's "coming soon" and may do my part with a bit of shopping.

AllHipHop: TVT Records Filing for Bankruptcy, Fired Most Employees

AllHipHop is reporting that they've been informed that TVT Records is filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy later this week and has fired most of the staff.

Step Up 2 The Streets Outperforms at Box Office

Step Up 2 The Streets opened this weekend bringing in the second highest box office take with almost $20 million to Jumper's $27+ million.  But Step Up 2 The Streets outperformed Jumper in individual theaters by grossing on average $20 more per theater.

According to Wooohah.com, Step Up 2 The Streets' success surprised the heck out of industry watchers with projections of $10 to 12 million for a movie made on a direct-to-DVD budget.

Disney built a strong online presence with a lot of engagement for Step Up 2 The Streets and they also did some nice things previously with the original Step Up.

Music Blog Buzz Study: Does Chatter Matter?

Coolfer has a nice response to the blog buzz study, Does Chatter Matter? The Impact of User-Generated Content on Music Sales, by Vasant Dhar and Elaine Chang, though he does refer to Chang only as a "former student" [pet peeve regarding the disappearance of second authors, but I digress].

Nevertheless Coolfer does briefly point out some of the limits of the study that most media outlets will ignore and he links to the sources.

Key point:
"Of course, a predictor may not be a cause for future sales. The researchers talked about this a bit and theorized that an unobserved variable (such as the quality of the artist) could cause both blog chatter and sales increases."

Which means that NYU's press release headline is inaccurate but that's how science becomes common knowledge.

Nice work, y'all!  Except for that headline writer.

P. Diddy's Back w/Cristal, Jay-Z's Still w/Armand & the Luxury Market Doesn't Seem to Care

In the wake of Jay-Z's Cristal champagne "boycott" of June 2006, which quickly became an opportunity for other companies to court rappers and for people who couldn't afford Cristal to express their outrage, I suggested that the tactically limited boycott might not have a seriously negative effect on Cristal champagne or on Champagne Louis Roederer, the French makers of Cristal.  In fact, I believed that it might actually be a positive move for Roederer to disconnect from overt associations with hip hop.

This view was taken as rather preposterous by other hip hop bloggers, all apparently with little direct knowledge of the luxury market, who just couldn't wrap their heads around the idea that an association with hip hop might be bad for a luxury brand.

Soon thereafter my suggestions found support from experts including industry researchers such as Richard Woodard:

"Richard Woodard, contributor to industry bible www.just-drinks.com, is researching a major report on the premium champagne market. He says: 'Cristal has almost got to the point where it has a downmarket image. It gets looked down upon because of all that gangsta rap stuff. Frankly, a lot of wealthy people don't want to identify themselves with that culture.'"

And in a widely quoted piece from Advertising Age it was suggested that other brands might benefit though Cristal was unlikedly to suffer:

"Rapper and Def Jam Records President Jay-Z's much-hyped boycott of Cristal isn't likely to cost the vintage champagne brand any dead presidents, according to beverage industry experts."

According to documents available from the Luxury Institute, in late 2006 Cristal champagne was rated the number 2 brand after Dom Perignon, a position it held again in early 2008.

Though the Luxury Institute did not have a 2005 survey for comparison, no mention is made of the hip hop boycott nor is there a suggestion that the boycott affected rich people's judgment.

A variety of signs suggest that Roederer's larger operations felt no sting.

From the fall of 2006 through today, Roederer has continued to expand with the acquisition of wine properties worldwide, the ongoing consideration of new acquisitions in such seemingly unlikely locations as England and long-term investments in their U.S. facilities.

Though I'm still working on accessing actual sales figures with the help of J. Jesus Ruiz and hope to find out more specifically if Cristal saw any negative effects at all, I do find it significant that P. Diddy has left the boycott behind.

In preparation for the recent Super Bowl festivities:

"Nearly every last bottle of Cristal in the state of Arizona has been snatched up on behalf of music mogul P. Diddy, who is hosting a blowout bash tonight at Club Axis/Radius, organizers say. 'He's hoarding all of it,' the distributor for the AZ Wine Co. told The Post. 'Cristal is hard to get anyway, but with the Super Bowl in town, it's impossible.'

Club organizers say they hope the 100 bottles now on hand are enough.  'I have been stockpiling all year for the Super Bowl, and especially for the P. Diddy block party,' said Jeff O'Neil, general manager of Axis/Radius.

VIPs at the event will be able to buy Diddy's stash of Cristal at $800 a popped cork."

So Diddy's back with Cristal, whether they like it or not, and Jay-Z is now associated with a lesser product, Armand de Brignac champagne, via product placements in the videos for Show Me What You Got and Blue Magic plus a 40/40 Club photo opp with Beyonce.

You may recall that Armand de Brignac is a champagne that was introduced in a fraudulent manner to the American market for which it was designed.  Apparently they're trying again, though the champagne is not getting good reviews and I was informed in December by a Wikipedia editor that someone who appeared to be an associate of the U.S. distributors was attempting to game Wikipedia in 2007 as they had in 2006.

Though this may seem like ancient history to some, it's another great example of how easy it is to pierce the veils of hip hop business fantasy by simply paying attention to the details, not being swayed by widely held assumptions without supporting evidence and checking back at a later date.  Think what could happen if full-time business journalists took hip hop seriously enough to regularly follow through with their superior resources.

But that vision takes us back to the realms of fantasy where rappers and hip hop "businessmen" would be held accountable for their boastful claims of realness and success.  Till then, enjoy the Emperor's New Streetwear!
