2008 Vinyl Album Sales Highest Since 1991
The ArtistForce.com blog discusses Nielsen's 2008 music sales figures and points out that vinyl sales are increasing:
"On a surprising note, vinyl saw an increase this year. In fact, more vinyl albums were purchased in 2008 than in any other year since Nielsen SoundScan started paying attention back in 1991. Consumers purchased 1.88 million LP’s in 2008, a whopping 89 percent increase over 2007."
This doesn't surprise me at all because, since Amazon launched its vinyl store, I've been watching all sorts of albums sell out before their release date and running into various online accounts of growing vinyl sales.
For more 2008 sales figures, see The Nielsen Company's press release with stats.

great news.. I think its inevitable that vynl will phase out but I hope its not in my lifetime.

I think this goes a long way to debunking the idea that people aren't interested in physical product anymore. If given something worth being interested in, people will be interested.
Long live vinyl!
Long live the CD!
Bring back the audio cassette! (My walkman still works)

So much of the criticism of physical product is from people who just listen to sh*tty mp3s and spout dogma about the web.
They don't know how to separate big trends from smaller trends, they can't recognize niches unless it suits them and they jump on anything that would suggest the death of major labels.
I've made some of those mistakes too but when you have actual evidence of what real people are doing, then you can figure out what's up without turning to the pundits who don't bother with details that contradict their positions.
