Over a decade after the release of the groundbreaking album “The Marshall Mathers LP,” Eminem is getting yet again another honor for it. This time the Detroit rapper’s album went diamond with 10 million records sold.
The accomplishment is no small feat as there are very few albums in the hip hop world that achieve that kind of sales. Of course it’s an additional achievement considering it’s the first time that a white rapper who was respected by the community was able to achieve that sort of commercial success.
The album isn’t just important for the album itself, but for hip hop. Eminem burst on the scene in 1998 with the Slim Shady LP which was a collection of songs that bordered on silly with the occasional soul baring. From there the fame began.
The release of the Marshall Mathers LP was more than just an album, it was a deep and personal confessional that dealt with Eminem’s life and the trappings of fame and the struggles of family. It was that deeply personal look into Eminem that made the album so fascinating to the masses.
The album also came with controversy. The use of homophobic slurs drew outrage from lesbian and gay anti-defamation representatives who felt Eminem used the words without thought or consideration. However the controversy seemed to spark album sales and curiosity in the mainstream public and resulting in a profound appreciate for the album itself.
Eminem changed the entire world of a hip hop that went against excess and spending and stuck to the root of the issues. It’s the kind of album that comes along once in an artist’s career. And thankfully the world was listening.
