Donald Trump Labeled Mac Miller As The Next Eminem

Business magnate Donald Trump has just given his Mac Miller his co-sign. Hosted at Youtube, Trump voiced out his obvious admiration through a video. While a real estate mogul is not generally seen as an influential voice in the hip hop scene, it didn’t stop Trump from branding the up-and-coming rapper as the next Eminem.

Mac Miller, the Rostrum Records signee, released a song entitled, “Donald Trump”. To date, the track has gained millions of followers with more than 20 million views on YouTube. Although Donald’s quipped that he has yet to her the song, being granted such overwhelming support from the host of The Apprentice is a huge career leap for Miller.

A full transcript of Trump’s video message about Miller is available. Here’s an excerpt: “A lot of people are calling me about the Mac Miller rap song. Now, it’s named ‘Donald Trump.’ Maybe you should pay me a lot of money, but it just did over 20 million people, tuning into Mac Miller. So in one way, I’m proud of him. I haven’t actually seen the language; it’s a little hard to understand on the song itself. Probably, it’s not the cleanest language you’ve ever heard, but this kid is the new Eminem. Everybody says he’s fantastic. Let’s see what it is. But the ‘Donald Trump’ song just hit over 20 million, that’s not so bad. I’m very proud of him.”

Mac Miller recently appeared on RapFix Live (the best Hip Hop talk show around) and talked about his career development and recent clothing purchases. The Pittsburgh native also hinted on introducing a video and single from his upcoming album Frick Park Market ahead of his scheduled launch of Blue Slide Park album in November this year.

2Pac Goes Diamond

One of the most enduring figures in hip-hop has been 2Pac Shakur. The rapper, who was gunned down in Las Vegas, left a lasting impression on not just his fans, but on the mainstream world. Well, for those doubting the kind of influence this artist had they can stop guessing as his Greatest Hits album went diamond nearly a decade after its release.

The story of 2Pac has as much to do with the public perception of hip-hop as his songs do with the hard life that he lived. There was no question that 2Pac was as street as they came. He was a serious rapper with plenty to vent about and an acute awareness for the world around him. He embodied that which the mainstream detested about hip hop. It was the piercing, the tattoos, the thuggish attitude that embodied a sort of defiance, but through all of it 2Pac rose above.

He was able to reach beyond the violence of hip-hop and reach down to the soul of the music. He reached back on a track like “Dear Mama” and gave thanks to the sacrifices and the hardships that his mother had. He had a voice for the voiceless and told stories of hard luck and struggle that couldn’t be imagined because it had to be lived.

The album going diamond, which means eclipsing the 10 million dollar mark, is a testament to his longevity as a cultural figure. The album has sold despite not having a lot of mainstream press the way artists like Kanye West and Lil’ Wayne have. There is no question that his status as a rap legend is cemented.

It’s a shame that 2Pac cannot be here to celebrate in the joy of such success. It’s a shame he’ll never get to savor the flavor of his voice really being heard. No doubt it lives on, though.

Lil Kim and Nicki Minaj Continue Their Feud

For those of you who thought the feud between Nicki Minaj and Lil’ Kim was over, you had better think again. The two queens of hip hop are at it again, and this time it’s Lil Kim is firing the shots.

On her Twitter page, the multi-platinum artist and protégé of Biggie Smalls fired shot after shot on her Twitter page.

Lil Kim tweeted:

I would never name her ‘Shitty Garbaj’!!! My dog is way prettier than that b****!!!” she wrote. “What type of coward lame a** b**** tweets some shit and then deletes it. REAL b****** stand by what they say BOZO…”

The feud began a few months ago when Nicki Minaj appeared on a remix of Britney Spears song called “Til The World Ends.” There she took veiled shots at Lil Kim and what she has called a dead career.

Lil Kim continued her Twitter rampage but the words are too foul to reprint. It’s clear that there is no love lost between these two ladies. It’s not a common occurrence to see two female hip hop artist beefing. Clearly the idea of a public beef is often considered a male thing.

Nicki Minaj has been the subject of much criticism since she arrived on the scene. While she has managed to nab an assortment of well known artists to work with she has often come up short in attempting to keep up with their skill level.

“Roman’s Revenge,” which she did with Eminem, was considered a particular failure on her part. The difference between the command that both showed was obvious and made Nicki Minaj look incredibly weak.

This feud has existed for a while so it’s unlikely that they will resolve anything anytime soon. Things could get very interesting between these two outspoken ladies of hip-hop.

The Anniversary of Marshall Mathers

Over a decade after the release of the groundbreaking album “The Marshall Mathers LP,” Eminem is getting yet again another honor for it. This time the Detroit rapper’s album went diamond with 10 million records sold.

The accomplishment is no small feat as there are very few albums in the hip hop world that achieve that kind of sales. Of course it’s an additional achievement considering it’s the first time that a white rapper who was respected by the community was able to achieve that sort of commercial success.

The album isn’t just important for the album itself, but for hip hop. Eminem burst on the scene in 1998 with the Slim Shady LP which was a collection of songs that bordered on silly with the occasional soul baring. From there the fame began.

The release of the Marshall Mathers LP was more than just an album, it was a deep and personal confessional that dealt with Eminem’s life and the trappings of fame and the struggles of family. It was that deeply personal look into Eminem that made the album so fascinating to the masses.

The album also came with controversy. The use of homophobic slurs drew outrage from lesbian and gay anti-defamation representatives who felt Eminem used the words without thought or consideration. However the controversy seemed to spark album sales and curiosity in the mainstream public and resulting in a profound appreciate for the album itself.

Eminem changed the entire world of a hip hop that went against excess and spending and stuck to the root of the issues. It’s the kind of album that comes along once in an artist’s career. And thankfully the world was listening.

Beyonce Gets Sued

According to NYMAG.com Beyonce Knowles, noted as “Ms. Carter,” is being sued by Gate Five for bailing on a video game. The lawsuit, which claims that Beyonce was difficult to work with and drove financiers away from a reported dance video game, seeks damages for approximately $100 million. The lawsuit pulls no punches in its attempt to label Beyonce as difficult to work with. The lawsuit states that Beyonce was in a “a bad faith breach of contract so callous that, on what appeared to be a whim, she destroyed Gate Five’s business and drove 70 people into unemployment, the week before Christmas.” It goes further to state that she “made an extortionate demand for entirely new compensation terms she wanted. When her maneuver backfired and drove away the financier (who found Ms. Carter too erratic to do business with), she pulled out of the project in breach of the agreement.” This is clearly a damaging lawsuit if she is found guilty. Of course it would damage her financially if she’s ordered to pay that kind of money, but it could also damage her reputation. Beyonce, who’s been able to spend a long time in the spotlight without taking any direct hits to her reputation, could now take a big one. The Gate Five representative that was interviewed about the lawsuit states that her actions were so callous that even her father couldn’t agree with her behavior. Matthew Knowles was fired last month as Beyonce’s manager. Clearly Beyonce will spend a long time battling this out. NYMAG.com could not reach Beyonce for a comment and it will be interesting to see when she finally does come out with her side. Being the biggest female performer in the world means she has a reputation to protect. This lawsuit could hurt her more than she knows.

Prodigy Clarifies Jay-Z Comments

Jay-Z has warned many in his songs not to “Throw rocks at the throne” but it appears that rapper Prodigy didn’t get the memo. In an effort to clarify his comments, Prodigy tried to set the record straight on his thoughts about Jay-Z.

The young artist made mention a few weeks back that Jay “knows the truth, but he chose sides with evil in order to be accepted in the corporate world,” Prodigy writes. “J.Z. conceals the truth from the black community and the world and promotes the lifestyle of the beast instead.”

Those strong words were clarified a bit when he blogged the other day about how he really feels about the president of Roc-A-Fella Records. “Some of that stuff people may have got twisted a little bit,” he said. “I definitely don’t think Jay-Z is in the Illuminati. I don’t know how that got out there. I definitely said some things about his choices that were questionable to me. But as far as Jay-Z in the Illuminati…that’s just speculation and I don’t really deal with too much of that.”

Of course it’s the price that an artist like Jay-Z must pay to be in his position. Of course Jay-Z hasn’t shied away from his lifestyle and instead embraced it in his music. His last album, “The Blueprint 3” approaches the idea that while he’s still the most talented MC in the game, he’s certainly not living the same life that he was many years ago. He makes no bones about his success, or his excess, and instead embraces it as a badge of honor that he’s made it.

Prodigy has certainly gotten Jay-Z’s attention as he’s made mention of him in a number of his songs and none of it has been flattering. Jay-Z certainly doesn’t feel threatened but perhaps Prodigy should. Its ok to throw rocks at the throne, but it’s going to hurt when they get thrown back.

The Financial Concerns of Nate Dogg

It appears that all was not right with the artist known as Nate Dogg upon his death. News is coming out that the southern California based hip hop artist was in a bit of trouble financially. Nate Dogg’s Pamona, California home went into foreclosure just two days after his death.

The bank has stated that Nate Dogg owed nearly $6,000 in mortgage payments and TMZ, the celebrity gossip site, has learned that Nate Dogg hadn’t made payments on his home since last December. It’s still unclear as to what the financial situation of Nate Dogg was at the time of his death. While it’s entirely possible that the R&B singer was broke, it’s also possible that Nate Dogg, who had suffered from numerous strokes over the last couple of years, simply had neglected them unintentionally.

The truth of Nate Dogg’s financial troubles may not have been known to the rest of the world, but it’s not anything new. Regardless of the downturn in the economy, there is a epidemic among hip hop artists where going broke is a commonality. The life of excess often exceeds the money they are making. When tied into the issues that many artists have with giving back to those who went along with them for the ride, there becomes an even bigger, and much harder to manage, problem.

Nate Dogg had a long career and was as instrumental to the development of the West Coast sound as those he worked with like Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg. His smooth vocals were the first to give hip hop a serious musical voice instead of a rapper singing his own hooks.

As the story unfolds for Nate Dogg’s estate, we’ll learn just how deep his financial issues ran. Here’s hoping the worst of his financial troubles are behind him — for the sake of his family, anyway.

Hip Hops Best and Brightest of 2010

2010 was a banner year for hip hop. It continued to take a step forward in becoming part of the mainstream fabric of the music world. Part of the reason hip hop had so much success was because of the wealth of quality albums that were released. From legendary figures, to acts that have managed to appear on the fringe of the mainstream, there were was quality from top to bottom in the hip hop landscape. So here’s a look at hip hop’s best in 2010, just in case you missed it.

Ric Ross “Teflon Don”

Few acts have arrived on the scene with buzz that Ric Ross did. The production on the album, from the likes of Kanye West and J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League, is one of the more underrated albums of the year. It’s the kind of album that was perfect for a man who has learned how to thrive in the spotlight.

Kanye West “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy”

Kanye needed a redeeming album after the 808’s, and Heartbreaks was a stunning attempt, but a tragic disappointment. His Dark Twisted Fantasy was one of the best albums of the year with a very honest soul to it and top notch production that has made him one of the very best voices in hip hop.

Lloyd Banks “The Hunger for More 2”

Lloyd Banks has been living in the shadow of his G-Unit counterpart, 50 Cent for years, but with his “The Hunger for More 2,” Banks took another step out of the shadow to prove that he was one of the brightest stars rising in the hip hop world. Banks has a vocal that commands attention and his skills as an emcee have only been strengthened over the years. Banks forged his own path.

These albums have been part of a landmark year for hip hop. It’s proven that hip hop is more than just counter culture.
