Clyde Smith Relaunches Cultural Research

Just a quick note for those of you with academic interests. I've relaunched Cultural Research, a site that began as an archive of my scholarly writing, mostly from the 1990s. I've added a blog with a focus on my current interests in disruptive innovation, libraries and education.

Check it out and please touch base if such things are of interest [you geeky thing, you!]:

Cambridge Library Collection: Library & Press Partner for Online & POD Access to Special Collections

Clyde Smith: Continuing Ed Volunteer in Action

World's Oldest Living Hip Hop Blogger Turns 50!!!

Apologies for the disrupted services here, at Hip Hop Press and at Weekly Hip Hop Albums but today is my 50th birthday and it's causing some turbulence!

I'm very happy to report the Guinness Book of World Records assures me that, even though both Elliott Wilson and Lil Mama are older than me, I still win the title of World's Oldest Living Hip Hop Blogger.

This victory attests to the power of:
a) consistently lying about your age,
b) obtaining high quality reconstructive plastic surgery.

Looking good, y'all!

On a related note, ProHipHop celebrates the 5th Anniversary of its founding post on November 7th.

Next round's on me!!

Happy Birthday Libras!!!

ProHipHop Privacy Policy & Related Educational Material: Updated 9/24/09

ProHipHop collects information about visitors but does not keep track of individuals. All information is used in the aggregate to better understand our visitors' interests. We do not share information with others, such as email addresses and other information received in the course of doing business.

However, we do use services that track and store an array of information and, if you are truly concerned about your privacy, you should become aware of the following information and conduct yourself with that in mind.

ProHipHop uses both Google Analytics and Quantcast to get a sense of where our visitors come from and what they do on the site. Many of the advertising networks to which ProHipHop belongs also use Quantcast. In addition, any ad served on ProHipHop may have additional means of monitoring your behavior online.

Between Google, Quantcast and our advertisers, cookies are being placed on your computer, IP addresses are being recorded and your web travels may be followed by such technology after leaving ProHipHop. With the current rise of Behavioral Targeting, you are being followed more closely than ever in a legal manner based on current U.S. legislation.

In addition, many ad networks with which ProHipHop is associated, serve ads via third parties that may be tracking you as well. Burst Media's Privacy Statement offers a great explanation of how ad networks operate include information about ads served by Burst, by their adConductor system and for third parties which such networks facilitate.

A full list of advertising networks with which ProHipHop is associated is included at the end of this post along with links to their privacy policies.

Here's what the folks at Burst have to say:

The Cookie Principle

Burst Network Publishers:

Burst may use cookies to improve your Web browsing experience. When you are first served a Burst ad, Burst may assign a unique random number to your computer browser - commonly known as a "cookie." We do this to understand the way a user responds to the ads we deliver. For example, this number lets us keep track of how many times you view an ad we distribute. Likewise, the cookie can help make sure you do not see the same ad over and over - thus enhancing your online Web viewing experience. We do not link the information we store in cookies to any personally identifiable information you submit while on our site. Most Web browsers automatically accept cookies, but you can usually change your browser to prevent that use if you desire.

adConductor Publishers:

adConductor may use cookies to improve your Web browsing experience. When you are first served an adConductor ad, adConductor may assign a unique random number to your computer browser - commonly known as a "cookie." We do this to understand the way a user responds to the ads we deliver.

Third-Party Measurement Services

Often, advertisers will employ a third-party service provider other than Burst for serving the advertisements and for tracking the performance of an ad program. These companies may employ cookie and 1x1 pixel technology to measure and improve the effectiveness of ads for their client. These companies may collect and use anonymous information about your visits to our member web sites and other web sites. The information collected can include:

1. Date/time of your visit
2. The banner ad that was shown
3. Their cookie
4. Your IP address
5. The URLs of sites you visit

This information can also be used for online preference marketing ("profiling") purposes.

In these instances, Burst has no control over the information collected by the third-party, and may not be held responsible for the actions of the third-party measurement service where collected information is concerned.

Catch that last sentence? That's what's known as an "Industry Standard."

If you wish to opt-out of such surveillance, the following resources will help in that endeavor:

Opt-out of Quantcast Advertising Delivery

Opt Out of Behavioral Advertising

ProHipHop will add additional relevant resources as discovered.

In addition, you may consider clearing your browser's web history, cookies and other information that may be revealed by these surveillance processes on a regular basis. For example, the Firefox browser allows you to have such information cleared automatically everytime the browser is closed. Many other such tools exist if you have an interest in real privacy on the web but they require your active involvement to be of use.

Ad Networks with which ProHipHop is associated and their privacy policies:

Burst Media:
Privacy Statement

adConductor is a division of Burst Media and appears to have the same Privacy Statement.

The MTV Networks Digital Tribes is powered by adConductor and one might assume that they go by the above Privacy Statement but I cannot currently verify that information and have been told that they do not have a publicly posted privacy policy.

The BET Ad Network is also powered by adConductor but they currently have what appears to be an outdated Privacy Policy linked from their home page that directs one to 24/7 Real Media for additional privacy information.

MOG Music Network:
Privacy Policy

Blogads:
Privacy Policy

Google AdSense:
Google Privacy Center: Advertising and Privacy

I think that covers it!

Bottom Line: If you're concerned about your privacy on the web, you should take matters into your own hands and educate yourself.

If you have any questions about what ProHipHop's up to or about anything related to this Privacy Policy, please email Clyde Smith at:

Promotional Opportunities at ProHipHop & Hip Hop Press

Since the guidelines for submitting materials for ProHipHop and Hip Hop Press have shifted over time and since what we do is somewhat different from what other hip hop blogs and websites do, no matter how similar we may at first appear, we want to clarify the promotional opportunities and how best to take advantage of them.

Core Concept:

All promo materials, press releases, newsletter subscriptions, etc. should go to:
hiphoppress(at)netweed(dot)com

Use of any other email related to associated sites, from ProHipHop to netweed, is not a good look at this point in time. If an email address ends in prohiphop.com or in netweed.com that isn't hiphoppress(at)netweed(dot)com please discontinue use and remove from your mailing lists ASAP unless we're engaged in a personal dialogue at those addresses.

What We Don't Do:

We do not do album reviews, artist interviews or artist features.

We do not post MP3's or mixtape links.

We do not post videos of live concerts, behind the scenes action, interviews, people shouting drunkenly at the camera, trailers for the trailer of the trailer, videos that start out with a big ass shaking in your face or a gun being fondled as if it was your best friend, videos that insult the viewer.

What We Do Post:

Press releases that are timely and primarily filled with news or information that we have not posted before at Hip Hop Press.  Such releases should include a designated press contact with email or phone number.  They can be cut and pasted into the email or attached as a Word .doc or .pdf file and sent to:
hiphoppress(at)netweed(dot)com

Album cover art, ideally with a source from which it can be preordered.  We rarely cover albums after the fact and generally prefer albums being released in hard copy via Amazon.

Videos: music videos of completed singles, hip hop ads and viral promotional videos that either involve using hip hop to promote something else or promoting hip hop products and events in a creative manner.

At ProHipHop: hip hop business related stuff including album releases and singles in the form of music videos.

At Hip Hop Press: press releases related to hip hop, R&B, urban arts & fashion and the music industry.  The Urban Arts & Fashion categories covers a rather wide range including fashion, African-American comedians and actors, visual arts, urban models and other topics that, broadly defined, fit under the arts and fashion umbrella.

We do not post releases about jazz, Carribean music including reggae, rock, folk and other genres of music that are neither hip hop nor R&B and do not cover athletes without an additional tie-in to the core categories at Hip Hop Press.

Exceptions and Anomalies:

There are examples of exceptions to all these rules but they typically involve a topic that's hot, a brand that's well known or something that catches Clyde's eye for ProHipHop.

General Rules of Thumb:

Arguing with us about what we cover generally works against you.  Explaining why you believe something fits is a smart thing, especially if you're sending press releases that aren't going up and you want clarification.

We often don't get to great material that we'd like to post.  We're sorry about that but we're doing the best we can.  However, if a press release doesn't go up at Hip Hop Press that you felt fit, write us, don't bombard us with additional copies as if we missed it.

If You Want Media Attention, You've Got to Reach Out Based on Their Needs, Not Yours

Think about it.  If you want someone you have absolutely no power over to help you, then you'll have to approach them based on their interests, not yours.

So why people get so worked up about my insistence that they send all pr materials to me at hiphoppress(at)netweed(dot)com is puzzling.

I've got a workflow.  You can get into that flow.  Or you can disrupt it.

Guess which approach increases your chances of getting coverage?

Blog Updates: From This Business of Blogging to ProHipHop

I decided to make my last official post on This Business of Blogging an overview of what's happening with all of my blog or blog-related projects. I'm mentioning it here because it's relevant to my hip hop projects and I know a few folks find behind the scenes info of interest.

Jay-Z: Blueprint 3 Cover Art Signals the End of ProHipHop

Jay-Z - Blueprint 3 album cover art

Jay-Z - Blueprint 3

Let's call it foreshadowing or just a bad day but everybody got the cover art for Jay-Z's Blueprint 3 but me as if I was already on the bench.

Or maybe it's the fact that I just got off the phone with a guy who couldn't figure out what I actually do related to hip hop, asked me what magazines I read and then, when I told him I'm online only, told me that I wasn't a 100% hip hop head!!!

I've met so many wonderful folks doing ProHipHop yet the clowns still obcure the beautiful people.

No, I'm not shutting down ProHipHop just yet but if I get back to serious writing on related topics, it will most likely be elsewhere. This puppy is fried like an egg on the sidewalk in the middle of the hottest August day in history.

Art via The Rap Up with apologies to all the blogs I've been neglecting of late. Lots of you are doing awesome work but I got other things on my mind.

I'm not the Eggman, I'm the [fried] Egg, man!

Update:
I just realized all roads lead back to Nah Right. Still, that's how it's feeling these days at ProHipHop.

This Is How Behind I Am

I just checked out a blog on my Bloglines account that I would have added at some time in the past to consider following regularly.  I haven't checked out the blog since adding it.  But I'm in the process of going through and checking out such feeds to either keep in the mix or put on ice.  I've been doing that off and on for the last 2 or 3 months.

The blogger that inspired this post retired in July 2008.  Guess it's time to unsubscribe!

Hip Hop Research: Book List Now at 75 Academic Titles

Hip Hop Research, a blog by Clyde Smith devoted to documenting academic books about hip hop, has reached 75 titles.

There are more to come but it's already an impressive overview of the academic study of hip hop.

Big ups to Greg Schick at World Hip Hop Market who sent me a list of hip hop books to check out. Thanks!

Press releases submitted directly to ProHipHop affiliate Hip Hop Press are now indexed by Google News.

Please submit all press releases and promotional material (for consideration at ProHipHop) to:
hiphoppress(at)netweed(dot)com

If you have questions, please hit us up there as well.

The End of GeoCities: Where Clyde's Web Empire Began

TechCrunch points to Yahoo's online announcement that no new GeoCities accounts may be created and that Yahoo! will close the service by the end of the year.

Though the original site no longer exists, I began web publishing on GeoCities with a simple version of NC Hip Hop Online featuring a piece based on interviews with Greensboro, NC freestyle artists back in 2001.

It's been a minute.

Hip Hop Research Blog: Book List Now at 51 Titles

Yvonne Bynoe: Encyclopedia of Rap and Hip-Hop Culture book

Yvonne Bynoe - Encyclopedia of Rap and Hip-Hop Culture

This has been a light week at ProHipHop between cable outages forcing me to use an excruciatingly slow dialup connection and the peaking of my allergy season. So I gave it the triply whammy and spent the day working on Hip Hop Research.

If you hadn't noticed my previous post on this project, basically I'm developing a blog-based book list of academic studies of hip hop with a few high quality related journalistic and photographic volumes thrown in for good measure.

I'm happy to report that I added the 51st title today and it's pretty impressive, not for what I've done but for what researchers giving serious attention to hip hop have accomplished. You can see the full list in the right hand column of the blog.

Though I'm working on this project as a first step towards an annotated bibliography, i.e. a reference book that a library-oriented press would put out, I think the blog itself will be a great tool for students, educators and researchers interested in hip hop. In particular, it's a very easy way for students dealing with sceptical teachers who don't realize that a lot of serious work has been done in this area to show that hip hop is a legitimate object of study.

The evidence speaks for itself unless you're dealing with a problem faculty member. In that case, best of luck!

Special thanks go out to MV at Hip Hop Lives for suggesting some newer volumes of which I was unaware.

I also discovered that The Hiphop Archive's website has greatly improved since the last time I checked it out. Of particular relevance to Hip Hop Research is the Hiphop University: Working Bibliography.

Hey, if you have an appropriate place to mention Hip Hop Research, please do. I think it's ready for folks to start spreading the word and it will only be useful if folks hear about it!

This Business of Blogging (& Web Publishing)

I'm using a new blog to explore some of my ideas about blogging and consulting and you can check it out at This Business of Blogging.

I'm actually focusing right now on opportunities to consult with nonprofits but not so much to become a consultant. Actually, I'm trying to establish some non-hip hop related blogging activities in relationship to an on-again, off-again library job search while also reflecting on the informal consulting I occasionally do with bloggers and web entrepreneurs.

Libraries are really interested in Web 2.0 but somehow saying, "yo, just check me out at ProHipHop", doesn't feel like it's going to do the trick!

I'm also pursuing some possibilities related to educational programs for nonprofits at local libraries so this speaks to the instructional aspect of librarianship.

And I'm open to the process leading elsewhere, since I've found I have some useful insights for bloggers and web entreprenuers that I generally don't share at ProHipHop, but I just want to take it one step at a time and see what happens without burdening the process with commercial expectations.

If that kind of thing interests you and you don't mind a bit of squishy self-reflection on a blog-in-process, drop on by!
