Flobots - Fight With Tools
Flobots' Fight With Tools is due May 20th from Universal Republic.
Flobots, a Denver based band mixing rap and rock, were only recently signed to Universal Republic but their debut album was ready to go.
As guitarist Andy Guerrero stated, "We got a very progressive record deal...It's allowed us to be full-time activists and musicians, which is pretty amazing."
Flobots' activist energies will help fuel Flobots.org:
After being inspired by young people during performances at schools and local peace organizations, members of the Denver-based band Flobots decided to create a non-profit entity that would demonstrate the ability of bands to use their platform to promote civic engagement and social change.
Skillz' Million Dollar Backpack has been pushed back from a June 10th to a July 8th release by KOCH Records. Let's hope that's the final push cause Skillz has been waiting long enough.
The album includes such guests as Common, Talib Kweli, Freeway and The Roots.

In The Shadow Of An Icon
In The Shadow Of An Icon is a compilation album released by Thug Life Army Records featuring a wide range of artists who feel the influence of Tupac Shakur.
However the album actually has no Tupac Shakur tracks though Tupac is featured in the cover art shown above. The question of how one markets a product that connects to such an iconic figure without having a contribution from that icon is interesting to consider and my own thoughts start with ideas for the album cover art that could somehow forefront the artists while indicating the presence of Tupac's spirit.
If such a marketing puzzle interests you, you may also enjoy considering the documentary Kurt Cobain: About A Son which is built on audio interviews but contains no film footage of Cobain or music by his band Nirvana. It's a surprisingly effective documentary from AJ Schnack that can also be taken as an example of creatively taking an alternate route.

Little Brother - And Justus For All
Little Brother's And Justus For All is due June 3rd from Hall of Justus.
Rizoh did a background check:
"Yesterday, some of you were confused (albeit excited) about this new Little Brother CD. So, I got in touch with Phonte to find out exactly what this is.
Tay says, 'It's the mixtape from last year mastered, minus the drops and skits, with a few new tracks included.'
This one's definitely going to be a keeper, because I remember and justus for all being better than some people's album."
I've actually wondered why we haven't seen more albums emerging from the mixtape circuit as mixtapes themselves become more legit. It will be interesting to see how And Justus For All does though it's off to a disappointing launch with that album cover and the straight reuse of the mixtape's title.

My Radio Is Bigger Than Yours Promo Video
This is a fun little video offering what I assume are all audio samples from Lupe Fiasco's The Cool. It works well as an audio sampler while also working well as a quick story that is more memorable than a typical collage of images or the like.
Billboard has news of Common's next album Invincible Summer that is tentatively due in July from Kanye West's Good Music:
"Invincible Summer," which Common has been hard at work on for the last two months, is tentatively scheduled for mid-July. The high-energy track "Universal Mind Control (U.M.C.)" is likely be the first single, due by the end of May. The Neptunes and Outkast producer Mr. DJ produced the album. Kanye West...did not contribute any tracks this time around.
"Kanye was focusing on his 'Glow in the Dark' show, so he hasn't been able to make it to the studio to weigh in," Common says. "But it worked out well, organically. The Neptunes & Mr. DJ came up with a fresh sound for me."
Guests include Cee-Lo, Chester French and, hopefully, Santogold.
Billboard checked out an 8 track preview that may or may not be in circulation.
Ludacris revealed a bit to Billboard about his next album, Theater of the Mind, scheduled for a September release from Def Jam:
"Calling the album a collection of his experiences up to this point, Ludacris promises that 'Theater' will be film-worthy. 'Expect the whole album [to be] theatrical,' he says. Though he hasn't yet chosen a first single, he says that a track should drop by June or July."
"Ludacris revealed the title of one track, 'Let's Stay Together,' produced by DJ Paul of Three6 Mafia. Other producers making contributions to the new album include Dre & Vidal, 9th wonder, Ice Drake and DJ Don Cannon."
He also discussed his upcoming film activities.

Plies - Definition Of Real
When I saw this cover art for Plies' Definition Of Real, due June 10th, I thought it was a joke but it's from his MySpace page which also has an ad for a men's "Certified Goon" t-shirt!
For the record, I never thought Lil Wayne's Carter III cover was a joke.

There won't be a sales faceoff between G-Unit's Terminate On Sight and The Game's Los Angeles Times/L.A.X. and 50 won't push back The Game's album to privilege G-Unit's release date.
Instead, Interscope has pushed both albums back with G-Unit’s Terminate On Sight due July 1 and The Game’s album, whatever it's called, out July 8.

Prodigy's H.N.I.C. Pt. 2 gets this week's buzz award with Atmosphere's When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Sh*t Gold also garnering much attention.
The Wild Pitch reissues, whose album cover art I posted last week, don't seem to be getting the coverage I expected but their Amazon sales are looking good, especially for The Coup's Kill My Landlord.

Wild Pitch Classics
Golden era label Wild Pitch Records appears to have returned though I can barely find anything on what's up with their return or their upcoming reissues of a number of classic albums on April 22nd. At least a couple have been reissued by other labels in the last year or two and so we have a little mystery at the moment.
The Coup - Kill My Landlord
Noz seems to have found them the same way I did, via Amazon, but didn't have the backstory though he did have a more complete list of titles.
Main Source - Breaking Atoms
Discogs has a Wild Pitch Records discography
Ultramagnetic MC's - Four Horsemen
JCOR reissued some titles back around 2001 and then they went under.
The UMC's - Unleashed
Wake Your Daughter Up has a nice history of Wild Pitch Records.
Chill Rob G - Ride the Rhythm
This Chill Rob G cover certainly sticks out from the rest.
The Coup - Genocide & Juice
Oddly enough, The Coup's Genocide & Juice is being released May 6th by Pendulum Records rather than Wild Pitch, though Pendulum is also supposed to be deceased.
Additional titles being reissued by Wild Pitch Records:
Brokin English Klik - Brokin English Klik
Gang Starr - No More Mr. Nice Guy
Hard Knocks - School of Hard Knocks
Lord Finesse & DJ Mike Smooth - Funky Technician
Main Source - F*ck What You Think
O.C. - Word...Life

Oddly enough, the video repeats itself before ending. But it's great till then!
