Martha Cooper: Name Tagging [Graffiti Photography Book]

Martha Cooper Name Tagging book cover art

Martha Cooper: Name Tagging

Name Tagging looks like another great graffiti photography book from Martha Cooper, who's been doing this since the early days in New York, from a great artbook press, Mark Batty Publisher.  It's due June 8th for general distribution but apparently there's already been a Book Launch Party at the OBEY Pop Up Store in New York.

From the press release:

In her first book with MBP, Going Postal, Cooper documented postal stickers adorned with some of the best-known street artists' work. With Name Tagging, she presents a dizzying array of "Hello My Name Is" stickers adorned with tags, the origin of graffiti and today's street art cultures.

Name Tagging recognizes the variety and innovation of tags, crediting the form's history while demonstrating how old-school methods breed some of today's most exciting graffiti. Cooper's introduction, artist interviews and colorful photographs make clear how artists famed and anonymous take advantage of the accessibility and practicality of name tag stickers. Name Tagging captures the artistry and audacity of these artists and their distinctive tags.

Interviews with ZEPHYR, COST, EDEC, CLAW, TWIST, SURE & FAUST, COSBE, ALONE, CAHBASM, OVERCONSUME and EARWORM reveal the history of this tradition as well as shed light on how some of today's most prolific writers get up.

"Finding an unusual sticker is definitely more challenging than photographing it, but photography is an excellent way of preserving this very ephemeral art form," says Cooper. "Tags written with markers on name badges enable the intricacies and aesthetics of their styles to be studied and appreciated – that's what this book is about."

Hieroglyphics x WAIL = The Valley Of Kings

The Hieroglyphics Crew and the art collective WAIL (When Art Imitates Life) have teamed up to create The Valley Of Kings:

"a series of 200 fine art portraits conceptualized by and featuring all Hiero members which will be made available to the public on May 28, 2010. Details on the piece will be released in the coming week, but it is said to use ancient Egyptian iconography as its stylistic base and features the entire nine-man crew."

"Valley will also be one of the first art pieces in history to utilize Chromadepth visual technology, and each piece in the series will come packaged with a pair of 3D glasses to allow owners to experience its full range."

I guess we'll just have to see it to understand!

Burk Uzzle’s Previously Unpublished Photos of Dr. Martin Luther King’s Funeral Procession

Around Town, Week of January 13, 2010 from City of Wilson, NC

Burk Uzzle’s first assignment as a young photographer came from JET magazine who sent him to cover Martin Luther King in Atlanta. He began with a family portrait in the King family’s home. He’s now unveiling a group of unpublished photos of Dr. King’s funeral procession at the Arts Council of Wilson in Wilson, NC, some of which you can see in the above video shot by Eric Blues. There may be other photos besides the procession but they were all taken in the week after Dr. King’s assassination.

A longer interview with Burk Uzzle is also available.

Looks like I’ll be making a road trip to Wilson before long! The show closes February 6th.
