Uncle Luke’s Short Film Selected to Screen at Sundance Festival

Uncle Luke

The Life and Freaky Times of Uncle Luke, a short film based around the life of Uncle Luke, has been selected to screen at the prestigious 2012 Sundance Film Festival.

The film, which traces Uncle Luke’s life from being a hip hop icon to a Miami mayoralty candidate, has been selected for the Festival’s Short Film category. It is one of the 64 films chosen among more than 7,000 worldwide entries.

Luther Campbell, more popularly known as Uncle Luke, or plainly, Luke, started out in the entertainment business as leader and member of 2 Live Crew, a hip hop group that originated from Miami, Florida.

According to the hip hop icon, he sees it as a great honor to be recognized by the Sundance Film Institute, an authority in the industry. Being considered as a significant part of American pop culture is a great milestone for him. By adding the film The Life and Freaky Times of Uncle Luke to the Festival’s Short Film Program, it was just emphasized how influential a hip hop artist he is.

Borscht Corp. produced the film in collaboration with Rakontur, a production company in Miami. Lucas Leyva, founder of the Borscht Corp., stated that they are honored to be chosen for the Sundance Short Film Program. This is their second consecutive year of making it in the Festival. Leyva added that this shows how much support Borscht is being given and that their hard work is given notice. Borscht is dedicated in creating more projects that could give Miami tales the justice they deserve.

Uncle Luke also added that The Life and Freaky Times of Uncle Luke lets the industry and the whole world know that Miami offers great creative talent that can match any from other parts of the world.

10 Movies and TV shows Reinvigorating Hip Hop Love

Readers, can you believe Hip Hop music is something that has been around for 30 plus years now? It brings joy to my heart to finally introduce to your attention 10 Movies & TV Shows that really make you remember the first time you fell in love with Hip Hop music.

1. Step Up

Made in 2006, Step up was a warm, sweet film about dancers Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan. Who can forget a story of endless love? Nora catches Tyler dancing his routine for a group of friends some break dance moves he’s been learning. Tyler now wants to help her with her moves, but she’s wary about the idea. Highly recommended watch, readers!

2. Honey

Who can forget a lady so sexy and sultry as Jessica Alba? For Honey Alba put on her best moves before the movie screen, with Mekhi Phifer playing a hairdresser and her love interest. Expect lots of enjoyment from this film, especially if your a Jessica Alba fan.

3. So You Think You Can Dance

Since the beginning of its first season, one of my favorite shows relating to dancing that ever came to Fox. Who can forget how this particular show brought us famed dancers Jamile McGee, Nick Lazzarini, and Allison Holker? This show still goes on, and you can catch it on FOX when it’s airing!

4. Americas Best Dance Crew

Another popular show that brought us loads of entertainment! Who can forget the infamous Jabbawockeez?

5. Take The Lead

No matter what age he is, Antonio Banderas looks good dancing on any platform you throw at him, and this film is no different.

6. Save The Last Dance

One of the most popular interracial dancing flicks of all time. Nuff said.

7. Centre Stage: Turn It Up

Who can forget how sexy Kate Parker looked and moved in this awesome dancing film from 2008. Lots of ambition and great camera work for this one, and we at ProHipHop recommend this one for any lover of dance.

8. Flashdance

Anyone who’s an 80′s baby knows that this movie has a lot to do with the emergence of film and the dancing aesthetic that went with it. Put on your over sized tee shirt, glam up, and pop this movie in sometimes!

9. Girls Just Want To Have Fun

Word of mouth has it that Miley Cyrus will be in the remake, but does she know how to dance? That’s one of the ways girls like to have fun!

10. Love Don’t Cost A Thing

Cornball Nick Cannon, and the always beautiful Christina Milan. Don’t sweat the technique, pick up this film and watch it sometime. Lots of dancing and urban flair to catch here.

What’s your favorite dance movie, reader?

Night Catches Us [Movie Poster], Sucker Free City [DVD Art]

Night Catches Us movie poster

Night Catches Us

I like this poster for Night Catches Us, a movie out this fall starring Anthony Mackie and Kerry Washington with a score by The Roots. Nice old school feel with graphic elements of the time. Add the synopsis and one gets the impression of a quality production with meaning:

In 1976, after years of mysterious absence, Marcus (Anthony Mackie, "The Hurt Locker") returns to the Philadelphia neighborhood where he came of age in the midst of the Black Power movement. While his arrival raises suspicion among his family and former neighbors, he finds acceptance from his old friend Patricia (Kerry Washington, "Ray," "Lift") and her daughter. However, Marcus quickly finds himself at odds with the organization he once embraced, whose members suspect he orchestrated the slaying of their former comrade-in-arms. In a startling sequence of events, Marcus must protect a secret that could shatter everyone's beliefs as he rediscovers his forbidden passion for Patricia.

Sucker Free City

Not only that but Anthony Mackie is one of my favorite young actors right now. He's been in some big projects over the last few years but I first saw him in Spike Lee's Sucker Free City and recommend it both as a great film and as a discussion worthy piece of business cinema!

Kerry Washington is exceptionally beautiful but I haven't seen her in much of anything yet so that will be another plus.

Written and directed by Tanya Hamilton, Night Catches Us opens October 29th On Demand and December 3rd in theaters.

Hung aka Monetizing That Big D*ck [Complete 1st Season DVD]

Hung The Complete First Season dvd cover art

Hung: The Complete First Season DVD

Pretty off-topic in many ways but I just saw the pilot for Hung, which is out now on DVD, and I think it's an incredibly inspirational tale of a man who hits bottom and pulls himself up by his own worn out socks with the only "tool" he has at hand, his big d*ck.

Now that's the entrepreneurial spirit in action!

Update: I've now seen the pilot and a couple of episodes and I have to say it's a great concept with poor execution.  The characters are uncomfortable to watch and I'm just generally disappointed.

Takers’ Posters; Movie Starring Matt Dillon, Idris Elba, T.I. & Chris Brown Opens August 27th

Takers Movie Poster

Takers Movie Poster

We've got two posters here for the movie Takers, starring all sorts of people including Matt Dillon, Idris Elba, T.I. and Chris Brown, and I can't decide which one I like least. The one above is less awkwardly photoshopped than the one below, which was deservedly savaged when it appeared last fall, yet I prefer the composition and most of the color choices of the poster below.

Another Takers Movie Poster

I don't know much about Takers but, man, the good folks at WoooHa.com seem to know a lot.

You can find out even more at IMDb:

Yeah, I know, rather loose use of the term "more" but one day they'll have more info and you'll be ready!

Big Boi x Converse = Boring Ass Shoes

Big Boi Converse hitop sneakers

Big Boi x Converse

So Big Boi "designs" a pair of Converse in honor of his recent release, Sir Lucious Left Foot, and the tongue seems to be the most interesting part.

Well, let's get his take on the shoes:

Converse – Big Boi Limited Edition Shoes

Ooh, timeless classics! I think the limited edition nature and the official cosign by Big Boi is the value here, certainly not the "design".

And given the ugly fur he wears in the video for Follow Us that doesn't match his clothes or the club and only vaguely relates to a line or two in the song, maybe his visual aesthetic isn't as developed as his musical aesthetic?

I'm not trying to hate here. I'd like to like these things but I'm currently just baffled. I mean, if I'm in Bankhead, checking for saucers or spaceships or classic cars, I'm not sure I'd be wearing these shoes.

Which makes me wonder.  Has Andre 3000 been dressing him up till now?
