Funkmaster Flex to Promote US Marine Corps

Funkmaster Flex with Marines album cover art

Funkmaster Flex with Marines (PRNewsFoto/MTV2)

Funkmaster Flex is helping the US Marine Corps market to potential recruits using both his MTV2 show, Funk Flex Full Throttle, and his Custom Car and Bike Show Tour. The focus will be on a special episode in which a group of Marines will work with Funkmaster Flex on a custom auto that will then be displayed at the USMC recuitment booth on the car show tour.

I think that's a pretty good match and I would not be at all surprised if it was an incredibly excellent match. However, that is the worst graphic I think I've seen to date distributed through PR Newswire which is not cheap. I know times are tough but why would MTV2 put out something that makes them look like they're working on a shoestring? That's simply embarrassing.

Winston Robinson Gets Creative for The [Ford] Fiesta Project With Ski Beatz, Ricky Ruckus & Conrizzle

Fiesta Gets Romantic

Winston Robinson created what I think is a pretty cool web ad for The Fiesta Project embedded above. The focus on a reasonably plausible scenario that we've seen before in other forms, a couple can't get restaurant reservations so a surprise elegant picnic is presented by the boyfriend, is used to awesome effect to show the many details that are intended to set Ford's Fiesta off from other cars.

Bonus: special appearances by Ski Beatz, Ricky Ruckus and Conrizzle!

Fashion Show as Marketing: Frank151 & Scion Present 151 Pieces

Frank151 & Scion Present 151 Pieces

Frank151 & Scion Present 151 Pieces

Frank151 and Scion collaborated on 151 Pieces, an innovative approach to marketing with fashion involving both an event and a website:

"The show debuted at the Scion Installation LA gallery in Culver City, California. Frank selected a total of 151 pieces from the Spring / Summer lines of over 70 lifestyle labels represented in Scion's Retail Distribution Network including Opening Ceremony, After Midnight NYC, Vans, and Rogan, and paired them with sophisticated basics to achieve an effortless, wearable silhouette at the fore of Summer '10 trends."

The website has a more interactive approach than did the fashion show (though that raises interesting possibilities as well!). Visitors can create their own shows and buy stuff. Interesting content is included and a "special-edition 151 Pieces Frank Book Chapter" was also created.

The aspect involving Frank151 is pretty cool but I'm also impressed by Scion's Retail Distribution Network that is the kind of thing that only really works if one is committed to long-term building as Scion has been. Scion is also preparing to launch "Scion Partners, a new program where customers can register for a card that allows them to get discounts and deals on clothing, footwear and music at stores around the country–many of whom sell items featured in the 151 Pieces show."

Pretty interesting efforts none of which necessarily involve cars. Lots to consider here.

2010 Kia Soul This or That Campaign

Kia Motors America today announced the "This or That" campaign for the 2010 Kia Soul featuring the return of the hip hop hamsters to the tune of Black Sheep's The Choice Is Yours.

Note: that hamster's outfit looks pretty suspect.  A lot of tricky stuff here but a lot depends on who they're trying to reach.

Black Sheep – The Choice Is Yours

This is a great song that I wouldn't mind hearing in the wasteland of television but it must be weird for serious fans to see it in the context of hamsters pimping Kia's. I don't pine for the past but I can understand the mixed feelings that might ensue.

Speaking of the past. I don't live there no more but I sure wish I'd appreciated certain things more when they were around, from music to scenes to people. Know what I mean?

This "funny because it's white people rapping and acting like rappers" approach is incredibly tiresome even though I can see that this is a well-done version with interesting and humorous details. I see all that but I just can't take it anymore.

But, if you like that kind of thing or just want to see how involved it can get, check out the Sienna Minivan YouTube channel.

Already a recipient of numerous accolades including a "2010 Automotive Excellence Award" from Popular Mechanics and being recognized as the "Best Hatchback of 2010" by Cars.com, the new 2010 Kia Soul was honored yet again today at the Nielsen Automotive Advertising Awards event in conjunction with the New York International Auto Show when the TV commercial for the uniquely styled urban passenger vehicle was named "Automotive Ad of the Year."

Nelly to Feature 2011 DUB Edition Mustang 5.0 on Next Album Cover

Nelly & 2011 DUB Edition Mustang 5.0

In an interesting continuation of his relationship with Ford Motor Company, Nelly will be featuring the 2011 DUB Edition Mustang 5.0, customized by DUB magazine for Nelly’s special purposes, on his next album cover. I find it interesting that for someone 15 years younger than me, Nelly also discusses the Mustang with nostalgia, though I assume that’s also part of Ford’s campaign:

“I don’t care where you grew up, everyone knows the Mustang. At some point, you’ve had a conversation about a Mustang – and it was probably one about you wanting to get behind the wheel of one…I’ve always loved the Mustang; the vehicle has power to the point where you can’t help but want to hit the pedal. And the newest one? More power, hotter style.”

Ford and Nelly continue to be a good fit.

Scion Sponsors Kongregate Collabs: Indie Artists/Musicians + Flash Game Developers

Scion is sponsoring Kongregate Collabs, a service from Kongregate that is said to offer a "venue and tools that let game artists and musicians link up with programmers to collaborate on creating games":

"The launch of Kongregate Collabs is sponsored by ongoing promotional partner Scion…As part of its second eight-week promotion with Kongregate, running through July 31, Scion will be the sole sponsor of Kongregate Collabs, including Scion's Artistic Intersection, a contest that will recognize and award weekly prizes to winning participants who upload the best entries."

"Winners will be determined by ratings from Kongregate players. Anyone can post their game art and music to get feedback, interaction and collaboration from the Kongregate community."

Well worth a look for indie artists and musicians on the come up.
