Ethan Brown Confirms Snitch Banned in Prisons

After reading Nolan Strong's report at AllHipHop that Ethan Brown's Snitch: Informers, Cooperators & the Corruption of Justice had been banned by the Federal Bureau of Prisons, I dropped Ethan a note about the matter.

Mr. Strong quotes from what I assume is a letter to Ethan Brown from the BOP:

"'The publication has been rejected because it contains information about other Bureau of Prisons incarcerated individuals,' the letter stated. 'This information has been determined to be detrimental to the security, good order and discipline of the institution. Due to the reasons cited, the above-named publication is not suited for introduction into a correctional facility.'"

Ethan confirmed that "the word from the BOP official is that Snitch 'is not suited for introduction into a correctional facility'" and he stated:

"In Snitch I wrote about the history of the sentencing guidelines and mandatory minimums as well as specific cases involving on the record cooperation deals. So, Snitch isn't about 'exposing' informants or supporting the stop snitching ethos--therefore, I strongly disagree that the book is not appropriate for federal prisons."

Lulu Promotes Nervous Breakdowns: Art of LeSean Thomas

Nervous Breakdowns: Art of LeSean Thomas book

Nervous Breakdowns: Art of LeSean Thomas

Lulu.com, an online do-it-yourself publish on demand service that keeps improving their offerings, celebrates Black History Month by promoting three books related to African-American topics, two of which have a hip hop connection.

I've written before about The Hip-Hop Education Guidebook while the Soumas Heritage Creole Cookbook sounds tasty but off-topic.

However I was particularly interested to discover Nervous Breakdowns: Art of LeSean Thomas that was published way back in 2006:

"From the Lead Character Designer and Co-Director of Aaron McGruder's "The Boondocks" animated series on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim, comes the unique, hip hop-driven vision of one of today's most dynamic and prolific new animators/artists, LeSean Thomas. Forward by Daytime Emmy Award Winning Producer/Art Director Jeff Matsuda ( "The Batman", and "Jackie Chan Adventures")."

You can find out more about LeSean Thomas and his artwork at his official website.

From Good To Great: Focusing on What Not to Do

I just started reading Good To Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap...and Others Don't by Jim Collins author of Built To Last: Successful Habits of Visionary Companies.

I can tell I'm going to love this book because the introduction is quite strong and the project is based on research by a large team over an extended period of time.  The team involved 20 people and Collins estimates that they put in "something on the order of 15,000 hours of work to the project."

But I'm mentioning it now because a quote in the introduction struck me as particularly relevant to my plans to go comment free at ProHipHop.

Collins lists a series of discoveries that they found surprising when studying companies that dramatically outperformed their peers over 15 year periods.

From p. 11 of Good To Great:
"The good-to-great companies did not focus principally on what to do to become great; they focused equally on what not to do and what to stop doing."

And that's a lot harder than it sounds!
