Singles: Flo Rida's Low #6, DF Felli Debuts at #44

Somebody around here forgot all about the Hot 100 top 10 singles late last week and when I get my hands on them...

T-Pain is the true ruler of the Hot 100 singles chart with features on four tracks.  That's some real presence especially since T-Pain's voice often defines a track rather than being a guest appearance as with most rapper features [except for Lil Weezy grabbing that duffel bag full of cash].

Flo Rida has a big week as Low featuring T-Pain rockets from no. 64 to no. 6.  Low is the first single off what will be Flo Rida's 2008 debut album.

Top 10 Singles on the Hot 100:

2. Alicia Keys - No One
3. Timbaland - Apologize feat. OneRepublic
4. Soulja Boy - Crank That (Soulja Boy)

6. Flo Rida - Low feat. T-Pain
7. Kanye West - Good Life feat. T-Pain
8. Baby Bash - Cyclone feat. T-Pain
9. Kanye West - Stronger
10. Finger Eleven - Paralyzer

DJ Felli has this week's top debut in the Hot 100 at no. 44 with Get Buck In Here featuring Diddy, Akon, Ludacris and Lil Jon, a "career high chart placement for the KPRW Los Angeles night DJ."

Albums: Hurricane Chris' 51/50 Ratchet Debuts at #24

Hurricane Chris - 51/50 Ratchet cd

Hurricane Chris - 51/50 Ratchet

It's a country/rock/Christmas shindig in the top 10 on the Billboard 200 album chart with no hip hop in sight cause hip hop is dead, dead, dead.

Yet rap lives on* with Hurricane Chris' 51/50 Ratchet debuting at no. 24.

9. Seether- Finding Beauty in Negative Spaces
10. Soundtrack - High School Musical 2

*So I'm being a little silly.  I'm just thinking that maybe it's time to balance out hip hop purism with some rap purism and wondering what that would look like.

For example:
It ain't art,
if it didn't chart!

[Can you tell I'm getting in the $pirit for the Christmas $ea$on?]

Week 7: Crank That (Soulja Boy) No. 1

If he's a one-hit wonder, Soulja Boy's having a great ride as he enters his 7th week at no. 1 on the Hot 100 singles chart.

The problem with the one hit wonder predictions is that the folks I see calling him a one-hit wonder simply don't like what he's doing.  References to the Macarena miss the larger dance boom largely fueled by hip hop that is not only expressing itself through YouTube and similar outlets but also in less visible means in hip hop dance classes and dance teams around the country.

He could still be a one-hit wonder but, if I had to make a choice, I'd go with the dancers.  They're in takeover mode right now at a time when a whole lot of us are pretty darn sick of people who think they deserve respect for having been a peon drug dealer on the corner.

Top 10 Singles on the Hot 100:

I missed a single homophobic line in Chamillionaire's post that I still think is just fine otherwise.  I'm very sorry about that.  I think homophobes are a-holes and one of my biggest regrets is that simply writing about hip hop is often taken as showing sympathy for homophobes.

Top Albums: Kanye West, 50 Cent, Kenny Chesney

Kanye West, 50 Cent and Kenny Chesney take the top three positions respectively on the Billboard 200 album chart yet, despite high sales figures for these three, "sales are still down 9% compared to the same week last year at 9.16 million."

2. 50 Cent - Curtis
3. Kenny Chesney - Just Who I Am: Poets & Pirates

10. Justin Timberlake - FutureSex/LoveSounds

It's Official: Kanye West Massacres 50 Cent in Soundscan Showdown

Billboard is officially reporting that Kanye West's Graduation had first week sales of 957,000 "posting The Billboard 200's largest sales total in more than two years."

50 Cent's Curtis moved 691,000 units in what should be a week of celebration for the artist who seems to be dealing with a lot of conflicting emotions at the moment.

One would hope that Kanye could calm down now but he will most likely take these sales figures as vindication for his poor behavior.  Feed the ego, get more of the ego.

Lots of interesting stuff in the Billboard article:
The total for West's "Graduation" is the largest by any album since 50 Cent's "The Massacre" opened with 1.1 million copies in March 2005..."Graduation" also rings up the largest week yet by a digital album download, starting with 133,000, beating the prior record of 102,000, set earlier this year by Maroon 5's "It Won't Be Soon Before Long."

Kenny Chesney Pirates & Poets [& Whatnot] moved a respectable 387,000 copies.

SoundScan Building Chart Puts Kanye West On Top

People have been drawing from all sorts of data to show that Kanye's beating 50 but this was the first I'd heard of SoundScan's Building Charts:

SoundScan's recently launched Building Charts post unweighted tracking-week sales from eight leading accounts through close of Tuesday each Wednesday at 5 p.m. ET, and sales through Thursday each Friday afternoon...

[Tuesday's] SoundScan Building Chart indicates first-day sales of 437,000 for West's "Graduation," 310,000 for 50 Cent's "Curtis" and 107,000 for Chesney's "Just Who I Am: Poets and Pirates."...

Retailers now contributing data to the Building Charts include Trans World Entertainment, Best Buy, Borders, Circuit City, iTunes, Target, Anderson Merchandisers and Handleman Co. The last two mentioned are rackjobbers that place music into mass merchants, including WalMart's stores. More retailers will be added to that panel in the near future.

Kanye West to Outsell 50 Cent & Kenny Chesney

According to multiple sources compiled by Nah Right, Kanye West is set to ether both 50 Cent and Kenny Chesney.

Yay or something!

Guess 50 Cent's sales van in the street did not outperform as hoped.

Crank That (Soulja Boy) No. 2, Kanye West's Stronger No. 3

Soulja Boy's Crank That (Soulja Boy) rises to second place on the Hot 100 singles chart followed by Kanye West's Stronger in third.

9. Plies - Shawty feat. T-Pain
10. Rihanna - Umbrella feat. Jay-Z

50 Cent's I Get Money debuts in the Hot 100 at no. 85.

Speaking of 50 vs. Kanye vs. Kenny, Mr. Chesney is looking strong.  Not only has he already had a top single on the Hot Country Songs chart with Never Wanted Nothing More (now no. 3) but he's making a little chart history according to Billboard:

On Hot Country Songs, Kenny Chesney sets a new high debut threshold in the modern era and matches the all-time high bow on the list with "Don't Blink" at No. 16. The song tops the Nielsen BDS-era record set when Keith Urban's "Once in a Lifetime" opened at No. 17 in August 2006. It also matches Buck Owens' No. 16 start with "My Heart Skips a Beat" in March 1964.

Of course, those tracks aren't in the Hot 100 top 10 but I bet Kenny does a good job of mobilizing his base and album sales do work rather differently than singles.

? - Both Timbaland and Sean Kingston were listed as No. 5 in the above linked article.  I'll update.
