I like this series of well made, personal yet professional videos from Nike Sportswear:
Episode 3 features Cory Gunz, Bronx based rapper and Young Money Entertainment budding superstar, giving us a tour of NYC’s northernmost borough, and according to Cory “The Birthplace of Hip Hop.”
But why do they say the Bronx is the birthplace of hip hop “according to Cory”? Study up or get out of the game!
This is already kind of old in web time but I just found out about it from the press release that shared Bounty's joy at the hundreds of thousands of views that may or may not have been generated by Bounty's botnet.
I'm not saying they're doing anything shady I'm just reminding us all that none of these views on sites like YouTube can be taken at face value. How do you know they're real? How do you know someone actually watched it? You don't and neither do I. But, since they did a YouTube homepage takeover, it could be for real.
I'm actually most impressed that the Paper Towel Gang makes Rev Run look kind of cool by comparison.
And I do have to give props for the use of the term "backhoe". I hope no further elaboration is necessary.
Confession, I'm watching this as I write the post. Man, they ripped off referenced so many artists, trends and subcultures in this. Got to respect that!
Good to see B.o.B getting some visibility but I can't quite get enthused about this commercial. It just feels like the annoying white guy placing his ridiculous order is the star and that makes it kind of hard to care. But maybe he's famous too and I don't know it because he's in one of those new rock bands I'm busy ignoring plus the fact the YouTube post just mentions B.o.B.
Gary Numan brings us a new wave blast from the past in one of the latest installments in the DieHard Torture Labs campaign.
Personally I think it’s time for a collab between DieHard Torture Lab and Survival Research Laboratories* except SRL would win by simply destroying everything!
DieHard Battery vs. Reggie Watts
And here’s Reggie Watts from ’09.
*Quick true story: I had a friend running the lightboard for an illegal SRL show in San Francisco back in the ’80s under a highway overpass in a fairly deserted part of town at that time. He said they were torching stuff with some kind of flame throwing cannon and though the board was up on the overpass itself, the flames eventually got high enough to melt the power cables they had hooked up. They held out as long as they could before shutting things down and abandoning the area!
So I could imagine multiple interesting ways to use powerful batteries in such work.
Winston Robinson created what I think is a pretty cool web ad for The Fiesta Project embedded above. The focus on a reasonably plausible scenario that we've seen before in other forms, a couple can't get restaurant reservations so a surprise elegant picnic is presented by the boyfriend, is used to awesome effect to show the many details that are intended to set Ford's Fiesta off from other cars.
Bonus: special appearances by Ski Beatz, Ricky Ruckus and Conrizzle!

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers down in Jacksonville, Florida joined with some young local artists to create the above music video inspired by the students' first visit to Everglades National Park. It's a good look for all parties though I couldn't get my mind off BP's oil spill and the looming destruction of similar habitats.
The following performers are listed on the video and also given writing credits:
The Path of Righteousness:
Kelvin Jennings aka The Lyric Master
Quinterius Cameron aka Young Q
Shawn Cameron
Featured Guests:
Carl Duckworth aka C-Note
Travis Pinckney aka TP Drums
The track was recorded and mixed at the Sonshine Communications studio.
2010 Kia Soul "This or That" Campaign [Photo: PRNewsFoto/Kia Motors America]
Kia Motors America today announced the "This or That" campaign for the 2010 Kia Soul featuring the return of the hip hop hamsters to the tune of Black Sheep's The Choice Is Yours.
Note: that hamster's outfit looks pretty suspect. A lot of tricky stuff here but a lot depends on who they're trying to reach.
Black Sheep – The Choice Is Yours
This is a great song that I wouldn't mind hearing in the wasteland of television but it must be weird for serious fans to see it in the context of hamsters pimping Kia's. I don't pine for the past but I can understand the mixed feelings that might ensue.
Speaking of the past. I don't live there no more but I sure wish I'd appreciated certain things more when they were around, from music to scenes to people. Know what I mean?
