VIBE Gives Battle Rappers Chance to be Crowned Eminem's No. 1 Stan

VIBE has announced a rather odd contest in which rappers submit videos of themselves freestyling over an Eminem instrumental with two eventually facing off at a VIBE event. Winners will be designated Eminem's No. 1 Stan.

It's tied into Eminem's money making return with Relapse and his appearance on the cover of VIBE's 2nd Annual Real Rap Issue. And it should be cool for the top contestants but somehow winning a contest to be crowned a Stan, i.e. a f*cked, up over the top fan, throws off the overall message, IMHO.

Public Enemy Remix Contest w/Obey & M-Audio

Through September 30th M-Audio is hosting the Public Enemy Remix Contest that:

"challenges musicians to create an original remix of an a cappella version of the group's...'Harder Than You Think,' from their current album 'How You Sell Soul to a Soulless People Who Sold Their Soul.' Chuck D and Johnny Juice of Public Enemy will judge entries uploaded to the M-Audio website, and the winner will receive a complete home studio setup from M-Audio."

"The winning remix will also be released on 12-inch vinyl by Obey Records. Backed with an exclusive unreleased Public Enemy track, the vinyl release will feature unique artwork created by noted graphic artist Shepard Fairey."

That vinyl release and the home studio are seriously cool prizes.  One of the nice things about current developments in music marketing on the web is that more and more contests and competitions actually lead to a meaningful reward that, in cases like this, can actually contribute to one's professional career.

Applications are now being accepted for the 2008 Red Bull Big Tune beat battle:

"Over the next seven months, Red Bull Big Tune will embark on its second national tour travelling the U.S. in search of the producer with the next 'Big Tune.'  Beat makers and sound providers can apply online to compete in regional battles in Philadelphia, Oakland, Houston, Chicago, Detroit, Seattle, Washington, D.C. and Los Angeles, Calif..."

"Two winners from each regional qualifier will advance to the national finals in New York this December. Along with bragging rights and custom studio equipment, the national Red Bull Big Tune champion will be given the opportunity to work with a recording artist of their choice at Red Bull Studios in Santa Monica, Calif."
