YouTube Video Awards: Vote Trunk Boiz, Plus: Soulja Boy & Evan Bernard

YouTube is in the final days (through Wednesday) of voting for the 2007 Video Awards and there's an interesting selection of music videos including Tay Sunday's Chocolate Rain and the Harmonica and Beatbox guy.

However I was most pleasantly surprised to find the first version of the Trunk Boiz' Scraper Bike video included because I just love that video.

So consider voting for the Trunk Boiz.  They're not going to win but that's a video worth supporting.

Surprise Update:
I finally got around to checking out the other categories and discovered two interesting hip hop videos.  Soulja Boy's How to Crank That is a contestant in the Instructional category while Evan Bernard's very cool POUND shows up in the Short Film category.

Doritos Crash the Super Bowl Semi-finalists Include Metafore, Blind Fury & NIVLA

Metafore - Nah Mean

Doritos has announced the 10 Crash the Super Bowl semi-finalists and you can vote for the winner including three hip hop acts: Metafore, Blind Fury and NIVLA featuring P. Oberoi.

I'd suggest skipping snackstrongproductions.com and cutting to the chase at myspace.com/doritoscrashthesuperbowl unless you prefer waiting for boring flash animations to lead you to the ENTER button first.

This one's especially worth voting for because the winner gets a 60-second video montage during a Super Bowl commercial break.

Update:
I'm seriously slipping.  Not only does the winner get the Super Bowl montage but "will also receive a record deal with Interscope Geffen A&M Records".  In addition, "three finalists will each be awarded $10,000 and a trip to Phoenix to attend the Doritos Super Bowl party."  Nice.  That's a serious contest.

50 Cent, Common & Polow Da Don Judge YouTube Rap Contest

YouTube OnTheRise RAP Edition '07 50 Cent Intro

50 Cent hosts the first promo video for the YouTube OntheRise Rap Edition '07, a contest for rappers that is the "follow-up to last year's highly successful YouTube Underground contest [and] is the first of three genre-specific music competitions."

50 gets an album promotion at the end of the above video.  I'm hoping that both Common and Polow da Don, who are the other two judges, will also soon have promo vids.  And I say that without a trace of sarcasm.

Also from the press release:
Artists can submit original videos that best represent their talents from Friday, August 10 through Friday, August 17. 50 Cent, Common and Polow da Don will help judge the contest and will select 20 finalists to be presented to the YouTube community on Wednesday, August 29. The YouTube community will then vote on a final winner who will be unveiled on Friday, September 7...

The winner will be awarded a trip to New York City to professionally record a single for G-Unit/Interscope Records, a $10,000 gift card from Guitar Center, and their video will be featured on the homepage of YouTube.

Interestingly enough, this contest even caught the attention of TechCrunch.  I didn't notice at first but they're currently running a picture of 50 Cent holding a short bat which is basically a weapon in his world.

ProHipHop Lite: I'm Not Writing Cause I'm Writing

As I mentioned in my previous post, ProHipHop is in Lite mode as I wrap up this job search round and complete some writing projects.

One of the projects is leading to an announcement in the next two weeks.  Hardcore followers of hip hop marketing will find it of great interest.  And that's all I can say!

The other is a bit off-topic.  I'm currently working on a book proposal to take my dissertation, focused on Power Relations in the Dance Classroom, as a starting point in writing a non-academic book for the general marketplace currently titled, Life in the Dance Asylum.

I'm mainly mentioning that now because I've decided to participate in Project Publish and there's time for you to consider the possibilities as well.

Project Publish is an opportunity in Web 2.0 contest form to have one's book proposal considered for publication by Touchstone Books, an imprint of Simon & Schuster.  Contestants will post book proposals at Media Predict, the public will vote on which one is most likely to be a hit and the winner of the final tally will get their book published.

I'm actually not hoping to win but am participating because there is the distinct possibility that one could connect with a literary agent in a context rather different from the norm.  It also offers the opportunity to write a more entertaining book proposal to reach the voters.  Beyond that, I should have written this proposal long ago and if it gets me closer, all to the good.

Submission info and so forth is on the Project Publish website.

If you post a relevant to ProHipHop book proposal, let me know in the comments and we'll send some love your way!

Update:
What the heck, I think I might work on a SXSW Interactive panel proposal while I'm at it.

Update 2:
Whoa, check out the panels from this year. That's a rad conference!

Contests: Talib Kweli Logo, Hieroglyphics Remix

Talib Kweli is looking for a new logo, I guess. The homepage says "Talib Kweli and Blacksmith Music Need A New Logo" but the contest rules clarify:
Participants in the Contest will design and submit artwork of a logo that will be considered for use in connection with the promotion, marketing, and other exploitation of Sponsor’s exclusive recording artist Talib Kweli.

I guess they're just hoping for something cool since there's not much else to go on.

Winners receive:
PRIZE. One (1) grand prize winner (“Winner”) will be awarded roundtrip economy class airfare to and from a city within the continental United States to the attend a Talib Kweli performance on his upcoming tour prior to December 31, 2007, as well as standard hotel accommodations (room and tax only) for two (2) nights, transportation costs, a ticket to the Talib Kweli performance on his tour, and a VIP Backsta ge Access Pass at the performance (collectively, the “Prize”). Winner shall be responsible for all meals and other expenses not specifically mentioned above as part of the Prize. Odds of winning depend on the number of eligible entries received during the entire Promotion Period. Approximate value of Prize: approximately $1,500.00.

In related news, it's described as a remix contest but what you're actually doing is taking a Hieroglyphics acappella and adding a beat, so is that really a remix? Fill me in, oh enlightened ones.

In any case, here are the details:
Goldmic.com is hosting a Hieroglyphics Remix contest sponsored by Berkleemusic.com. To enter this contest, producers should visit Goldmic.com to download the Hieroglyphics acappela and then produce and mix in an original beat and upload the finished song back to Goldmic.com. The winner will be selected by the Hieroglyphics Crew and will receive a free 12-week online course from Berkleemusic.com: Hip-Hop Writing and Production* ($895 value), a Hiero Prize Pack, one year of Artist Promotion on Goldmic.com and have the winning song featured in a Hiero Podcast, which gets 30,000+ downloads. The contest begins on May 8, 2006 and ends on June 7, 2006.

Bolt & Hip-Hop Theater Festival Team for Competition

Bolt and the Hip-Hop Theater Festival have an interesting marketing partnership happening with a special Hip-Hop Theater Festival profile at Bolt, a user content focused social network.

But the fun part is the Voice on Blast Competition:
The Voice on Blast Competition allows people to submit their own hip hop content - anything from monologues, rants, poems, music or video. The winner of the Voice on Blast Competition (to be announced on June 5) will be a featured performer in the New York City Hip Hop Theater Festival, including an exclusive audition with the producers of Russell Simmons' Def Poetry Jam. Bolt members will have the opportunity to select the Top 10 finalist.

"Moo & Oink Jingle Contest Hosted by Shorty K"!!

I'm not even sure I want to fully understand this contest hosted by "Shorty K" but I feel it's my duty to share it with you, dear readers.

jingle contest ad

Link via AdPulp: Rap About Meat And Win!

Update: Sterfish adds some Chicago context regarding Moo & Oink describing earlier commercials as having an "upbeat, R&B flavor" and including details on specials in a combination that he describes as "endearingly cheesy as opposed to annoying."

Although, I think I could get annoyed at these ads, I did find myself willing to listen to all of them most of the way through.  Partly I was fascinated by the details of available meats in the context of some fairly well crafted songs and I understand now that the writers were building off a tradition.

I'm going to hold off for the mixtape to make my final judgement!

New ProHipHop Category: Competitions

I've been putting competitions, contests and related events in the Events category.  All such future posts will now be found in the Competitions category.

Honestly, Typepad isn't designed well for massive numbers of posts.  If anyone knows of a blogging solution that will take a category and break it up into multiple pages, please drop a comment.
