Though I gave Matt Sonzala a hard time about his across the board attack on the "media", the narrow focusing of attention on celebrities that is evident even in the blogosphere should be a real note of concern for independent and up-and-coming musicians planning future trips to the SXSW music festival.
I'm working on some ideas about how to maximize one's impact from attendance at SXSW focused on extending one's presence via online media and on some things one might do while at the festival.
What are your thoughts on how small-time bands can best benefit from attending SXSW as the festival transitions due to the growing presence of big brands?
Comments are open for this one. You can also send comments or links to your own posts to me at:

I'll include as much as I can in an upcoming post focused on this topic.

I hadn't realized what an extensive account Wendy Day is providing of the Blood Raw promo tour. According to both a promotional email from Kim Ellis of KE Consulting & Marketing Solutions and comments from Wendy Day on her blog, this run is an independent effort to build support for Def Jam's upcoming release of Blood Raw's My Life The True Testimony.
From Day One:
"We're doing this tour on a super shoe string budget. Unless we can build a strong buzz around the first single: Louie, featuring Jeezy, Def Jam will not kick in and pick up the project. So we're hitting the streets hard with a ridiculously low budget."
Yeah, it's harsh like that in the real world.
I found out about this tour after the Raleigh, NC stop where ProHipHop World Headquarters is currently located but check out this description of my hometown:
"Raleigh is an interesting market. It’s more New York-ish than dirty south. I find most of the guys rocking Timberlands and calling each other “son.” The style of music is more Fat Joe and Joe Buddens than UGK and Lil Wayne. But the radio seems to follow whatever is hot, so they have Rocko and Flo Rida and Rick Ross spinning. But the mixed CDs reflect a different picture."
That's right, son. Now don't make me stomp you with my Tims!
On a side note, North Carolina has some interesting rap connections to New York via certain small towns involved in witness protection programs, I kid you not! Folks in Greensboro who grew up in smaller places used to tell me about kids from New York providing cassettes of DJ Red Alert's shows back in the day.
If you're interested in following the tales of life on the road check Wendy's blog for the February posts and, if blogspot holds true to form, you can check soon for the March posts.
Some footage of the tour is available on the Blood Raw YouTube Channel and the rest of the tour dates are posted on his MySpace page.
The Duck Down Vs. Stones Throw Sound Clash at this year's SXSW Music Festival sounds like a great way to take a showcase amidst a wide range of showcases and give it a bit more edge.
There's no indication that there will be any kind of battle or similar event but this is a freebie and should be a good look for both labels.
The event is sponsored by VTech phones.

Houston So Real has photos from Bun B's return to the stage and Boo Goo Doo Boom has videos and a review.
Houston So Real's Matt Sonzala on some of the UGK shows that he saw or tried to see:
"It's still a mystery to me as to why UGK did so few shows. It's a moot point now and I am happy to say that I am one of the few people who got to see them multiple times. I should do a post someday about all the times I went to see UGK over the years. Like the time they played TSU in 1994 with Brand Nubian, The Odd Squad and Seeds of Soul. Or like when I went to see them in Baytown but the parking lot got shot up before the show could ever begin and I ended up ducking down the side of a bayou wall to keep out of range of all the bullets. That was probably 1993 or so."
But this show wasn't like Baytown:
"Whew, what a night. The vibes were so right, the energy was electric, the sound was flawless, the flow was uninterrupted by any bullsh*t. It just went perfect and I hope Bun takes this show on the road. You should too."
Pimp C's moved on and Bun B's back on the horse.
Update:
Even the NY Times covered this show.

The Return of the Trill: Bun B's Back!
I didn't expect a record label announcement from an Apple/Jay-Z combo at this year's Macworld Expo. I don't think Apple would make Jay-Z a president because they don't need to give away titles to get people on board and corporate presidents are typically focused on operations which doesn't seem to be Jay-Z's forte.
I wouldn't have been surprised by a marketing type deal but, according to Duncan Riley at TechCrunch, looks like they got Randy Newman for star power to close the show.
I was also checking Gizmodo's live blog manned by Jason Chen. Those guys are boring in real time without some kind of prank to work with.
And Jason Chen doesn't know anything about Randy Newman. All he knows is Toy Story. What an idiot.
Randy Newman's a devastating critic of American society when he chooses to be so whatever he was singing, it seems to have gone over the Gizmodo brain trust like so many wispy clouds.
I just checked back for Duncan Riley's closing coverage at Techcrunch. That guy is a fool.
Update:
Duncan Riley pulled some stuff from the post but my statement stands based on his history of stupid statements.
Reminder for those on the come up:
Want To Get Famous? Mount a Guerrilla Attack on Gizmodo!
Though the Internets Celebrities' VH1 Hip Hop Honors Episode may have gotten them banned from this and other events, we may never really know, since hip hop biz is mad covert!
But the Gizmodo crew at CES were seriously messing with people's money by shutting down their flat screen displays at a major, expensive to attend event.
As a result, a permanent ban on CES attendance has been placed on one Gizmodo staffer and there may be "additional sanctions against Gizmodo and Gawker Media" according to an official statement from CES organizers.
On the Flip Side:
It must have been a really fun prank. Certainly the IC guys had fun. So I guess it's a matter of what kind of access you want going forward. I'm focusing more on bridge building and how to maintain a sharp critique while still being a useful community resource at the moment, which is a lot of darn work, but I definitely understand the pull to shake things up at these events.

will.i.am, Yoko Ono, Natasha Bedingfield, Pat Monahan
Yoko Ono was joined at CES by will.i.am, Natasha Bedingfield and Pat Monahan to present the new version of the John Lennon Educational Tour Bus that comes equipped with:
"two studio environments which are each powered by a high-end Apple Mac Pro loaded with Ableton Live, Logic Studio, Final Cut Studio and Sibelius music notation software, supplemented by an Apple XServe and XRAID system which facilitates high-bandwidth HD multimedia production and storage."
The bus is a nonprofit project intended to:
"provide students with free hands-on opportunities to make music, produce video projects, and shoot digital photos in the mobile recording studios. The Lennon Bus also has an illustrious history as a hit maker, with chart topping singles from The Black Eyed Peas and Fergie recorded on board."
The project was created by Executive Director Brian Rothschild and music manager David Sonenberg:
"with the focus originally on providing programs in songwriting and audio production. The program has expanded to include video production, and the new Bus goes even further with the addition of Sony HD video solutions, Mackie 5.1 surround sound monitor systems and Apogee's high-definition digital audio converters. Also new for '08 is an on-board Chromatte booth from Reflecmedia, as well as Bogen Imaging's full line of grip equipment, tripods, filters, and accessories."
You can check the official site of the John Lennon Educational Tour Bus for school touring dates.
It's no surprise that lots of sponsors wanted in on this:
"The Bus, a 501(c)(3) venture, is made possible through the generosity of sponsors including Maxell Corporation, Apple, NAMM, Roland, Godin Guitars, Edirol by Roland, Sibelius, Audio-Technica, Sonicbids, Digidesign, Aphex Systems, Sony, Musician's Friend, Neutrik, Glyph Technologies, Ampeg, Ableton, Mackie, Crate, Apogee, Disc Makers, Smart Technologies, Antares, Bogen Imaging, IK Multimedia, McDSP, SKB, Ultimate Support, PureVolume.com, Planet Waves, Spectrasonics, Music Player Network, Native Instruments, and Boss."

Rapper Supernatural performs at Skullcandy Booth during CES
Lots of hip hop present at the in-progress International CES, a trade show focusing on consumer electronics, and I'll be doing a series of posts on the event.
Supernatural's freestyles off audience supplied-objects are serious crowd pleasers and he works the crowd at CES for Skullcandy, an electronics company supplying headphones and mobile gear.
Skullcandy has a nice blog documenting their ongoing promotions with rock and rap artists including DJ A-Trak and DJ Skee and Ya Boy.
Be sure to check out the site graphics around the page border on Skullcandy's site. Yeah, you've seen skulls and guns before but that's an interesting implementation with real style.
Turns out this is one of Supernatural's sidelines and you can check out the same act for Proofpoint at RSA 2007.
