50 Cent vs Fat Joe: Humor - Evil = Success

50 Cent Warns You! Listening To Fat Joe is Dangerous

This video and the 50 Cent Rushed To Hospital After Listening To Fat Joe video are the first 50 Cent videos I've watched all the way through in a long time.

Yeah, they're kind of silly but that's what drew me in. It's a ridiculous attack yet it works to reframe Fat Joe's single and to make 50 look light hearted despite his shriveled little heart.

Nice work, everybody!

Robert Greene on Writing The 50th Law with 50 Cent

The 50th Law - 50 Cent & Robert Greene book cover art

The 50th Law - 50 Cent & Robert Greene

The 50th Law by 50 Cent & Robert Greene is due September 8th from HarperStudio.

Robert Greene discusses the process of writing the book at his blog. Power, Seduction and War, in the first of a four part series. He said he was sceptical when 50's people first contacted him because he tends to avoid the world of celebrity and then pretty much describes why I have no interest in interviewing Russell Simmons or his ilk:

"By necessity, anyone who has reached the top has had to resort to all kinds of manipulative maneuvers, but most people in the limelight try to disguise all of that as best they can. They want to project to the public their angelic, spiritual side, highlighting the progressive causes they support, their inner goodness."

Greene feels that 50 Cent is a different phenomenon for a variety of reaons including the fact that he doesn't hide his power struggles though, from a distance, that just seems like another game to me, not necessarily superior to playing the spirituality card. Greene feels that 50 Cent is what Machiavelli termed a "New Prince":

"New Princes...start at the bottom--with no privileges, connections, or money. What they have in abundance is ambition and hunger for power. If they make mistakes, they quickly analyze what they did wrong and learn the lesson. Considering the odds against them, they must stay focused, alert and patient. If they begin to rise up the ladder, it is almost purely by their own actions."

"They do not depend on others. They can handle downturns in fortune because they are used to adversity and turning negatives into positives. Since their education comes from experience and observation, they can think in the moment and adapt to their environment. They re-write the rules that others then slavishly follow."

He goes on to describe their working method and the emergent focus on the power of fearlessness leading to the organization of the book:

"Together we mapped out ten common types of fears and the reverse power that you can obtain by overcoming them. We found stories from his own life that would illustrate these ideas, many of them culled from his days as a hustler and even highlighting mistakes along the way that taught him valuable lessons...

"I would bring in examples from other historical figures who exemplified this trait. Many of them would be African Americans--Frederick Douglass, James Baldwin, Miles Davis, Malcolm X, Hurricane Carter, et al--whose fearless quality was forged by their harsh struggles against racism. Others would come from all periods and cultures--the Stoics, Joan of Arc, JFK, Leonardo da Vinci, Mao tse-tung."

Malcolm X and JFK? I'm looking forward to this book but I already find it rather amusing to watch this variant mythmaking process in which 50 Cent and Greene are engaged. Just different forms of the game at a time when 50's claimed lack of fear seems overshadowed by his reliance on connections to Eminem and Dr. Dre, his limited and quite specific skills as an artist and his tendency to drive away anyone under him who isn't a total yes man.

I'm not so interested in fearlessness myself. Every act of success I've experienced has involved facing my fears and doing what I felt needed to be done despite them. I certainly haven't experienced 50 Cent's success but, man, I would not want to be in his f*cked up shoes, that's for certain.

More importantly, anyone that tells you they have no fear is not to be trusted and and I don't believe that famous people who behaved in a fearless manner were necessarily fearless themselves.

So, yes, moving forward despite one's fears is huge and that does put one in a state of being in which one appears fearless.  Actually having no fear is a different story.  So I'm looking forward to finding out what they reveal about overcoming fear just as much as I'm looking forward to seeing how they build the myths of 50 Cent and Robert Greene.

50 Cent's Overpriced Mansion Taken Off Market

50 Cent's Farmington mansion has been taken off the market after a two year effort:

"The home, which the famous rapper bought in 2003 for $4.1 million, was for sale for 722 days, first with an asking price of $18.5 million. Late last year, the asking price was dropped to $14.5 million in an effort to attract more potential buyers."

"In May, the listing contract with Keller Williams Realty's Ridgefield office officially expired, and the property has not yet been re-listed for sale, an agent familiar with the estate said."

50 Cent: Blood on the Sand Videogame Sales FAIL

Sales of 50 Cent's Blood on the Sand videogame are 1/12th that of Bulletproof despite earning much better reviews. Though Kotaku is unsure, ProHipHop feels that this is yet another sign that 50 Cent's brand is fading.

50 Cent [Probably] Booted from The Expendables

Just heard about the news that 50 Cent was replacing [not] Forest Whitaker in The Expendables, written and directed by Sylvester Stallone, which fits 50 much better than Forest Whitaker. You know, one bad actor directing another bad actor.

50 Cent turning down such a role with a powerhouse cast that is said to include Jet Li and Jason Statham sounded ridiculous so I headed over to WoooHa who points out that the most likely reason 50 Cent is out was because Sylvester Stallone booted him after getting a poor reaction from the web world.

Check WoooHa's Related Posts below the above linked post for a brief history of 50 Cent's expendability.

50 Cent's Rick Ross Attacks: Psychological Viagra to Counter the Humiliation of Kanye's Victory; Damaging His Hollywood Potential?

Though I've certainly given Rick Ross a hard time, I realized this afternoon that 50 Cent's generally d*ck-like, clear the strip, let's all be losers together mentality has caused me to become sympathetic to Rick Ross, despite the fact that Ross represents much of the rap nonsense of which I'm sick.

My assumption is that 50 Cent will continue until he can claim Rick Ross is ruined but whether or not that's possible remains to be seen. Sales of Deeper Than Rap will be one indicator but, with album sales dropping and no direct comparison to 50 Cent available, that may not be a clear sign.

The reality is, 50 Cent has a very lucky break with Dr. Dre and Eminem both building to potentially huge releases. He's able to get more work out of them, or at least out of Eminem, than he would have otherwise and he's also able to ride their coattails at a point where it's pretty clear that he has nothing new to offer musically, though that may work to his advantage with his current fanbase and sometimes results in great singles.

Whether or not the attacks on Rick Ross will help his sales is a question mark but part of what this over the top approach is about has to do with countering the effects of his total humiliation by Kanye West who beat him by simply being a bigger and better artist.

I'm not a huge fan of where Kanye's going but he was able to change his game while growing his fanbase and beat 50 Cent by not battling, i.e. he took away 50's weapons, battling and album sales, and left 50 Cent looking quite limp in comparison.

So attacking Ross is part of showing the kids on the schoolyard, the cons behind bars and the riff raff on the streets that he's still the biggest bully on the block.  And, ultimately, being a total d*ck appears to be his own form of psychological Viagra.

Since his core fanbase digs that kind of nonsense this may work in his favor for awhile but, given the fact that he seems to alienate so many people on an ongoing basis, even in his own camp, it may work against him long term among hip hop fans who aren't so happy with his f*ckery.

It's too bad he's not ready to step up to another level of the game as he appeared poised to do with his Hollywood incursions. But I bet he's damaging himself in Hollywood, where folks realize he can't act and are watching him destroy the upward mobility of his brand. Of course, Hollywood doesn't tell you that, they just stop calling, so that's another angle to watch long term.

We'll see what happens with 50 and he'll be worth watching though the details may be disgustingly heinous. I've learned not to ever count 50 Cent out though I think if Dre and Em weren't in action, 50 Cent's weakening trajectory would be much more clearly in view, even as he plays hardball with Rick Ross.

50 Cent: Money and Power Reality Show Cancelled

So 50 Cent's reality show The Money and the Power ain't happening and I'm not overly surprised though I did expect the show to go on.

MTV Networks' VP of entertainment, Brian Graden said:

"Our new shows will feature themes of affirmation and accomplishment...Our shows are going to focus less on loud and silly hooks and more on young people proving themselves."

I personally am not into the humiliate people on their way up approach.  I think it's a punk move by people in power.

And when I saw 50 in one of the promo clips responding to a guy who wanted to start a sports website by challenging him to do pushups it made me realize that this was going to be a trivial enterprise on top of being abusive.

Before I Self Destruct: Pushed Back, Beefed Up

Though 50 Cent's Before I Self Destruct has been pushed back to 2009, it's now to be released with significant bonuses including the film of the same title on DVD, plus a more limited release that adds Two Turntables And A Microphone: The Life And Death Of Jam Master Jay to the bundle.

It initially seemed that 50 Cent might drop the Before I Self Destruct movie separately but this bonus approach makes so much sense if he wants to give his album a really strong boost.

Also, by dropping it at the beginning of the year rather than the end, it optimizes the potential for having highest album sales for the year.

Of course, that would require some strong singles and an extended campaign but it would certainly be worth a year's investment to come back with album of the year for all sorts of great reasons but especially because you know he misses that crown!

Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson Community Garden

As America leaves the election behind and turns to watch 50 Cent's reality tv "business" show The Money and the Power, residents of Queens are enjoying a new park funded by G-Unity and named after 50 Cent.

The Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson Community Garden was designed by Walter Hood with $150,000 from G-Unity "which paid not only for the water collection system, but also for a complete redesign of the old community garden".

Curtis digs the garden:
"'If you ask kids where tomatoes come from, they say the refrigerator...Now they have a little farm going.' And while the old garden was 'nothing worth going to look at, now it's exciting.'"
