Future of Music Coalition on Music 2.0 Business Models

Music 2.0 Business Models (part 1)

Kristin Thomson, Education Director for the Future of Music Coalition, narrates a lengthy slide presentation that I have not yet had the time to check out thoroughly but which seems to cover a lot of useful ground.

Music 2.0 Business Models (part 2)

There are also related charts in .pdf files that include "Examples of New Business Models in Music" and "How to get your music into digital music services."

Music 2.0 Business Models (part 3)

This may sound pretty basic, and it is to some degree, but I've generally found that a solid, thorough overview of the basics can be useful even to those folks already immersed in emergent settings as a way to step back and remind ourselves of the big picture as well as of our own biases regarding where best to focus time and energy.

I've also found that the world is full of blowhards, usually male, who will sit in meetings or comment online as if they know it all but if you ask them about really basic things, you discover they have no real foundation.  And that's a powerful thing to understand.

Music 2.0 Business Models (part 4)

Bonus:
If you're really into the topic of business models, you might find Business Model Generation: A Handbook for Visionaries, Game Changers, and Challengers of interest

You can check out this lengthy preview in .pdf or see lead author Alexander Osterwalder present on the topic of Business Models as a Tool for Success.

Twitter Secret Documents: "Diddy values his contribution higher than we do" [got that right, lol]

TechCrunch microanalyses a bunch of leaked internal Twitter documents and meeting notes and comes up with a list regarding P. Twitty and a possible "Entertainment/Marketing Advisory Board" that includes the following notes:

Diddy not so strategic

Diddy values his contribution higher than we do

Talk to the Ciroc people

Get a group of people rather than concentrate on Diddy

Maybe get them to invest which will give us more pull with them when they do things we don't like

Distractionary Element

Damn, they sure got his number!

Lots of interesting business stuff, the good stuff you don't normally get which is why most business news is so darn boring.

Social Media Disaster Averted: will.i.am Responds Effectively to Perez Hilton's Twittered Assault Claims

Perez Hilton is a grotesque, hysterical slob and his Twittered claim that will.i.am and his security guards attacked Miss Thing seems to have backfired.

tonite was a good (& kinda crazy) nite!!!

According to will.i.am, taping apparently before hearing about the tweets, he confronted Perez in a nonviolent manner after the MuchMusic Awards and asked him to chill on the disrespect after Perez made Fergie cry. Then he follows on an even more serious note after being informed of Hilton's Twitter hysteria.

perez drama

My general take is that will.i.am effectively responded in a timely manner on his own video blog, the mass media has picked up on that response and many folks on the web are questioning Mr. Hilton who clearly overreacted.

If Hilton was attacked, maybe he has problems telling black people apart?

Charles Hamilton take note! This is a great example of effectively using social media to respond to specific claims in a calm, cool and collected manner. And a great example of a major star addressing people directly, word to celebs with ghost twitterers.

Twitter Marketing w/TRVSDJAM Mixtape: Fix Your Face Vol. 2 - Coachella '09

TRVSDJAM, the combined force of Travis Barker and DJ-AM, are releasing their newest mixtape via Twitter in a viral campaign.

By tweeting "Download the new #trvsdjam mixtape 'Fix Your Face Vol. 2 - Coachella 09' in exchange for one tweet! http://twitter.trvsdjam.com/", tweeters will receive a free download of Fix Your Face Vol. 2 - Coachella '09 via an application built by Culture Jam Labs.

It looks like you have to go to twitter.trvsdjam.com, that's a subdomain of trvsdjam.com, so this isn't about building Twitter followers at twitter.com/trvsdjam.

This move should get a heck of a lot of media coverage since creative use of Twitter, or simply using Twitter to do things formerly done elsewhere, seems to be the easiest way to get coverage at the moment.

ArtistRise.com Concert Industry Network Launches

Screenshot of Artist Profile at ArtistRise.com

Screenshot of Artist Profile at ArtistRise.com

Artist Rise launched ArtistRise.com this week as a "free profile based community enabling Artists, Industry Professionals, Venues and Fans to network, promote, book shows online and advance the industry."

It's initially focued on Los Angeles and New York with more cities to follow which is key. A booking site for the nation is what's needed for serious indie artists.

This is exactly the kind of web tool/service that I intend to make a bigger focus at ProHipHop via the Indie Music Tools section.

Twitter Tools: FileTwt, TwitDoc, Music Sharing

A huge range of services for Twitter users continue to roll out. Here are two for file and document sharing that may be of use depending on your needs plus an extended list of Twitter tools for music sharing.

FileTwt for file sharing.

Via ReadWriteWeb:

"At the moment, the UI is a bit clunky and the file sizes are capped at 20MB, but the service presents an exciting opportunity nevertheless...it already allows for mass sharing (either via public streams or multiple-recipient DMs) of files, which is awesome news for self-marketing musicians, who desperately need better online promotional tools..."

"Filetwt is now uploading files only to RapidShare. They plan to add more hosts, namely DepositFiles, FileFactory, and MegaUpload, in about one week."

TwitDoc for document sharing.

Via TechCrunch.

"TwitDoc is launching what appears to be the first service for sharing documents over Twitter, bringing support for PDFs, Microsoft Office Documents, and a bunch of other file formats. The site has integrated with popular document sharing hub Scribd to make the process as painless as possible - it only takes around 20 seconds to send a document, and you don’t have to sign up to get started."

Though a bit dated, this list of tools for sharing music on Twitter is also well worth a look.

I'm planning to start featuring more such tools for Twitter as well as other web services with a focus on music marketers and indie musicians in a new category called Indie Music Tools.

AdAge Twitter Hype Overshadows Actual Eminem Marketing

I'm definitely not a big Eminem fan but his return is a huge event, his album should do well based on such early indicators as Amazon preorders and I'm certainly trying to get my share of the action with multiple posts even as I question some of the ethics of the marketing campaign.

That said, I think his marketing has mostly followed now traditional forms from tv to magazines to the web, with some fun twists thrown in and, since his return is such an event, there's been a firestorm of coverage. So when I was contacted for responses to his campaign for an AdAge article ultimately titled How Eminem's Marketing Team Is Using Twitter to Build Buzz, I downplayed the Twitter angle in my response.

However other bloggers took a different angle and were included. Elliott Wilson did a particularly nice job on the Stan/Twitter connection while Scott Yeti related the wider campaign to movie marketing. I became background as in "some in the hip-hop-marketing world downplay the impact of the messaging service."

And that's cool. Not everybody makes it in to anything and Wilson, in particular, is very good at providing soundbites that feed the expectations of other members of the media. But looking at the article now, I have to say that the current hype about Twitter has clearly oversahdowed what's actually working in the Relapse campaign:

"According to Compete, Eminem.com reached 113,868 unique visitors during April, while the most popular of his tweets -- which linked to Therelapse.com on May 7 -- reached at least 41,704 people within just one week, according to an analysis of data provided to Ad Age by Tweetreach. And data provided by Native Digital, the start-up behind music-buzz tracker We Are Hunted, suggest that Eminem was the most-talked-about artist on Twitter last week, the week before the album's release."

I'm assuming the mention of Eminem.com stats compared to Twitter stats makes the 41k people in one week for a single tweet look good but are those "impressive results"?

I've never gone to Eminem.com before but I have written multiple posts and embedded videos such as We Made You which, in an apparently official version, has already received 1,964,277 views and has, no doubt, been shown via all sorts of other channels of distribution.

Now that's not to say that the occasional posts, 20 in total, to Eminem's Twitter account haven't had an impact but the real impact has come from the fact that Twitter is a hottie, everybody wants to cover her like they used to cover Paris Hilton and so Eminem's use of Twitter has received far more coverage online reaching what I would argue is a much bigger audience than the 83,646 followers of his skimpy Twitter stream or the 40k "within just one week" that surely included nonfollowers who clicked through from other sites to a highly publicized tweet.

That's not to say that there's anything wrong with looking at Twitter but this article plays into the use of Twitter as a hook because it's hot right now when it's the overall campaign supporting the return of a much loved individual after a multiyear absence that is the compelling story.

I guess if it bleeds tweets, it leads. But don't let such hype drive your marketing decisions unless you're going for coverage of your campaign. Clearly a somewhat effective Twitter effort can currently receive much more coverage than more successful efforts in other venues. And that's probably the biggest takeway from this AdAge article.

Update:
Had a brief email exchange with Charlie Moran, author of the AdAge piece, and he was quite nice about my rather harsh take on his article.  Very thoughtful guy and I see more clearly what he was up to though I think some points of disagreement remain.

However, I have been following Charlie for a bit.  In addition to periodic features at AdAge, you can check for his blog posts at Songs For Soap focusing on music and advertising.

Lil' Kim Download Music Video f/T-Pain & Charlie Wilson Also Features urFooz' Fooz Avatars

Lil' Kim - Download f/T-Pain & Charlie Wilson

urFooz is happy to announce the appearance of their Fooz avatar/profile widgets in Lil' Kim's Download music video featuring T-Pain & Charlie Wilson:

"The new hot single "Download" starring urFooz and Lil' Kim is currently in the Top 10 on iTunes most popular downloads and has just been released. It has already had even greater success than its first two versions, based on the original "Computer Love" also starring singer in the Gap Band and legendary Soul and R&B Grammy winning multi-platinum selling artist, Charlie Wilson. The first version was released in 1985 and re-released in 1994."

They also state that "Acer, a leading provider of personal computing solutions, and FUHU, maker of urFooz.com, partnered together on the video" but it's unclear how deeply they were involved in shot calling though the whole thing has the feel of some agency putting it all together from behind the scenes.

Interesting widget concept:

"urFooz allows users to create an avatar and portable profile that contains music, photos, feeds and videos. The service then lets users syndicate their profile on the most popular social networking services and Web destinations using a single account."
