Pharrell Williams: I'm a PC [Person, Complex] Commercial

Pharrell Williams - I'm a PC Commercial

These new "I'm a PC" commercials are doing a nice job of undermining Apple's binary assault on Windows users.  Hey, they're complex, interesting people too!  Just like us Mac users.

Your move, Apple.

Aesop Rock Promo Video for None Shall Pass Falls Flat

Aesop Rock - None Shall Pass - EPK

Since I'm assuming that really smart creative people were involved in the making of this video, I won't pull any punches and say it's almost a total waste of time.  I only watched it all the way through out of a peculiar sense of professional obligation.

It's not funny but maybe the hardcore fan base will enjoy Aesop Rock in the role of pretentious artist.  There doesn't seem to be any music from the album and, since Aesop Rock is capable of making not so good albums, let's just hope it's a good one.  In the absence of any actual audio snippets, no doubt considered a witty move back at the lab, we can just assume that it will be at least as good as was this skit.  Ha ha.

Calling it an EPK or Electronic Press Kit points to this video's failings rather than whatever might be its strengths given that a video full of filler dramatic material isn't designed to make information for the press very accessible.

A Promotional Stroll Down Brooklyn's 5th Ave.

Michael Miraflor has a nice array of promotional posters found on "5th Ave in BK between 4th and 15th streets".

Just the kind of thing I'd like to see at ProHipHop.

Miraflor on the XXL Website Redesign

Michael Miraflor looks at the XXL website redesign in progess with a follow-up post of particular interest focused on the needs of the advertisers.

For some reason, the homepage placement of the bloggers has been downgraded.  Perhaps not the draw they hoped but at least they're still on the homepage.

Michael Miraflor returns to blogging at Hip Hop and Advertising:

BlogAds introduces Flash units (and unintentionally opens a pandora's box)

Go say nice things.  Maybe he'll stick around!

The Miraflor Report: Kanye/Luda/Game & Boost, Idlewild Web Ads, Real Live NY Subway Ads!

Michael Miraflor takes a look back at the Boost Mobile commercial featuring Ludacris, Kanye and Game at Hip Hop and Advertising;

Contemplates ads from the Idlewild web campaign;

And then tops it all off with actual New York subway ads!

I'm particularly digging the street shots.  I would love to see similar reports from all over the country.

Verizon Broadband Beatbox Mixer

I finally checked out the Verizon Beatbox Mixer site promoting Verizon Broadband and dug the graphics but watching some of the mixes got a bit weird.  I think the vocalists are well chosen but they start to look like they do literally need to spit after a while.

Still-In-Beta Hip Hop And Advertising Blog Debuts

Michael Miraflor, one of the [former?] writers at Hip Hop Blogs and the organizer of the hip hop ads discussion group, let me know that he's finally launched his Hip Hop and Advertising weblog, a move long anticipated among a small group of nutty bloggers.

I should point out that he originally let me know it had soft launched so that I wouldn't be surprised but that I've harassed him into letting me announce it, even though he's still very much working out the bugs.  I guess my powers of persuasion are not as weak as I imagined!

The thing is, you can already tell Michael's going to bring a whole other dimension to the growing online discussion of hip hop marketing just from the initial test posts he's been playing with.  In particular, I'm happy to see him applying his marketing industry insider knowledge in such posts as:

SPOTTED: DMX Integration on SOHH & BallerStatus

SPOTTED: Snickers/BEP integration on HHDX

I'm also glad to see him taking on those stupid text link ads that have been the bane of my news reading at both SOHH and AllHipHop, especially when embedded in blogs:

Do you ever find yourself surfing your favorite hip hop site when you suddenly come across an article littered with those double-underlined links?  The ones that aren't internal links but rather outbound links for advertisers?  That sometimes have a text box or image pop up upon mouse-over?  Don't you hate that?  I do, especially when they are mixed in with real internal links.

ProHipHop readers should know that this is the same Michael Miraflor who was one of the folks that was instrumental in convincing me to remove ProHipHop's popunder ads because they were so annoying, despite the fact that that's exactly why they were my best money maker.

His encouragement, as well as the encouragement of various other young turks, was absolutely correct.  Nevertheless, let's keep an eye on Michael's ad choices at Hip Hop and Advertising, shall we?  That should be fun.

Actually, I'll be keeping a close eye on this blog for all the obvious reasons beyond the fact that he'll be posting good stuff.

Pressure?  Yeah, I'm feeling it.  Oh, sh*t, my heart.....

Michael Miraflor on Sprite, Hip Hop & CP+B

I received an email from Michael Miraflor, a contributor to Hip Hop Blogs, regarding my post about the changing relationship of Sprite and hip hop.  He was nice enough to ok my sharing a section:

Check out www.hiphopdx.com . . . Remnants of the (now-abandoned) urban-flavored Sprite campaign litter the home page, and link to http://www.douhavetheproof.com/home.do. There is a countdown on the landing page.

Intriguing in theory, but there is absolutely no buzz in advertising/marketing circles about it, mainly because it is a strategy that was beaten to death by Microsoft in anticipation of the Xbox 360 (the infamous www.origenxbox360.com countdown comes to mind).  So in hip hop's defense, the demise of hip hop culture as a lead in Sprite's marketing cache can be attributed to poor media strategy and planning by their online agency as much as external cultural forces (i.e. decline of hip hop as a cultural force, etc).

As far as Sprite changing agencies from Ogilvy to CP+B, it is worth noting that CP+B jacked some hip hop terminology to market the VW Jetta in late 2005/early 2006.  Here are two of a handful of creative executions that played on a few urban phrases:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/sensual_shadows_photography/127217390/ (It's the sh*t)
http://www.flickr.com/photos/marline0919/136476198/ (representin', yo)

I'm not saying that CP+B (also the minds behind the love/hate Burger King King and subservient chicken) understands hip hop culture, mind you, but they are more aware of culture than 80% of agencies out there.

As I responded to Michael, I'll be writing more about Crispin Porter + Bogusky, aka CP+B, in the near future.  Till then, I leave you with this CP+B contribution to pop culture:
