Google Chrome OS: Meet the New Boss

I don't cover a lot of straight up tech news but Google's "introduction" of their impending Chrome OS, initially targeted to netbooks, is kind of a big deal.

On the one hand, I don't trust Google or their long term plans for world web domination. On the other, I've hated Microsoft for so long and the thought of having a decent alternative to Windows running on those cool new netbooks is a pleasant one.

At least we now have an overseer that understands online security. I can work with that as long as embedding the Chrome Mental Monitor in my brainstem remains optional!

Brian Jonestown Massacre, Cat's Cradle, 4.7.09

Saw Brian Jonestown Massacre last night.

It appeared to be an early lineup of some sort.

Whatever the details, it was an amazing show. All psychedelic, no country.

It was like they said, "let's just play Clyde's favorite songs tonight."

And they did!

Anton's on his game. If you're a fan, catch this tour.

Tiebreaker: Jeb Bishop / Harris Eisenstadt / Jason Roebke

Jeb Bishop, Harris Eisenstadt, Jason Roebke - Tiebreaker album cover art

Jeb Bishop, Harris Eisenstadt, Jason Roebke - Tiebreaker

Writing about jazz and old-timers reminded me of an old friend, Jeb Bishop, who manages to be a fine musician and a fine human being at the same time.

Though I haven't heard this latest album, Tiebreaker with Harris Eisenstadt and Jason Roebke, it's said to be a live set recorded in Krakow, Poland in 2006.

If you've had a hankering for improvisational trombone, I'd definitely recommend checking Jeb out.  Experiments in rock?  Seek the Angels of Epistemology.  Seriously.

There Is No Raleigh-Durham

There's no Raleigh-Durham.  There's no Raleigh/Durham.  There's only Raleigh and Durham.

Every time I see these two jammed together because we are or have been treated as a statistical unit by certain sectors of the U.S. government, it's misleading and often stupid.

Our boundaries don't connect.  Our politicians don't work together.  Our citizens know they live in Raleigh or Durham.  Nobody here says Raleigh-Durham.

If you're going to do business here.  Learn that.

If you want to look like you don't belong here, just keeping writing about Raleigh-Durham, a fictional town that doesn't exist.

Late!

Raleigh Rambles: Roasted Tomatillo Salsa

A friend of mine, John Dancy-Jones, recently made some roasted tomatillo salsa from which I greatly benefited.  You can click through to see my contribution throwing off an otherwise lovely composition of the results.

John also blogs at Raleigh Nature and you can find his small press and papermaking site at The Paper Plant.

Thanks John!

Batman: Gotham Knight - Journey to The Dark Knight

Batman Gotham Knight dvd

Batman: Gotham Knight

Don't know when I'm going to get to see The Dark Knight but I'm currently watching Batman: Gotham Knight which is a series of shorts by different animators related to the period between Batman Begins and The Dark Knight.

So far it's well worth watching though I like the interesting depictions of Batman more than the particular stories.  But it's been fun and I look forward to seeing the rest.

Animatrix dvd

The Animatrix

If you like this sort of thing, I'd also recommend The Animatrix, a series of shorts by different animators related to The Matrix films with some writing as well as oversight from the Wachowski brothers.

Life Lessons from the Dark Knight

This is a little off topic but MTV.com's "life lessons" from the Dark Knight include some funny bits and some relevant advice for ProHipHop readers.

Best Advice:

"2. Never trust a man who smiles all the time.
He is either trying to sell you something or trying to kill you."

Branding Reminder:

"6. Always announce your presence.
"I am Batman." "I am Batman." "I am Batman." Let the world know your name ... and tremble."

Tatsuya Nakatani: Primal Communication Tour

Tatsuya Nakatani: Primal Communication cd

Tatsuya Nakatani: Primal Communication

This is a bit off topic but I recently saw a solo improvisational percussion performance by Tatsuya Nakatani and, if you like that kind of thing, I'd highly recommend catching him on his current tour.

His album, Primal Communication, is "one straight track of 57'34", no over dubbing or editing" and was quite similar to the live show so I'm assuming he's improvising within a structure of some sort.

I talked with him briefly after the performance but didn't think to ask about the underlying structure cause I was too much in fan mode while trying not to be overly enthusiastic about my response.  He's very real and approachable and serious about what he does without being pretentious or grandiose.  That's hard to pull off and I'm just happy I caught his act and had a moment to speak with him.

Off Topic: Capone's Grandson is Also His Son!!!

Hip hop loves the gangsters and Scarface was one of the biggest.

Now, Al Capone's grandson is set to release his memoir, Son of Scarface!!!

Wow, not only is he the grandson of Scarface but he's the son as well, since memoir's are autobiographical.

This is either a very twisted tale or some very weird marketing.

8) Brian Walsby: NC Punk Rock in the 80s, Manchild, Patty Duke Syndrome

Brian Walsby - Manchild 3 book

Brian Walsby - Manchild 3

One of the aging pseudonymous hipsters at rduwtf.com links to a series of posts by Brian Walsby about the North Carolina punk rock scene in the 1980s.

This is a bit off-topic except that I know most of those folks and spent quite a bit of time in that scene in the 80s in Raleigh though I was never a punk.

More relevant to my readers, Walsby's first post gives one a sense of how the punk rock scene communicated and built national networks before we had the Internet:

I became sort of infatuated with the North Carolina scene of the early eighties when I started reading scene reports in the then brand new (& 'crucial") Maximum Rock N Roll magazine, & it more or less started when I heard the "Why Are We Here?" seven inch that came out on No Core Records in 1983. A friend of mine, Ron Cerros, had it. It had the following bands on it: No Labels, Corrosion Of Conformity, Stillborn Christians & Bloodmobile on it. We listened to it all of the time.

Then I got a copy of the Paul Mahern (of the Zero Boys, a criminally under looked Midwest hardcore band)'s massive double LP compilation record he assembled on his own label, called "The Master Tape Volume II". No Labels had two songs on it. I thought they were both great. Then shortly afterwards, I got a dubbed copy in the mail from an Australian pen pal, of the No Labels "Jane Doe" demo. I thought it was one of the best hardcore tapes I had ever heard, & to this day I still think so. From then I started writing to all of those guys out there. It was what you did when you were involved in that scene.

Zines, mailorder and actual mail helped build an informal national and even international network of like-minded artists and fans who would then put bands up when they were coming through town and, often, the shows were at house parties or other alternative sites.

Since there was such a critique of society embedded in punk rock, in the early days the idea of getting signed to a major label sounded like a bad thing but every other kid you'd meet had started a record label to put out the bands they liked.  So networks weren't developed to build careers but to build the scene, i.e., to create counter-culture.

Pop's gone punk and it's a different world even without the Web but punk and indie rock bands have continued the DIY tradition and shown that it's a great way to build alternatives to mainstream society, to establish one's independence while working within mainstream society and/or to build as an artist while creating the foundation for a successful signing to a major label.

If you're interested in that NC punk rock history, Brian Walsby also has interviews with a lot of the folks that were there before he arrived on the scene.

If you're familiar with Ryan Adams, you may know that Ryan started out in Patty Duke Syndrome with Brian Walsby before he went on to form Whiskeytown.  Unfortunately, Adams will not allow the material to be released:

"Despite the baggage, Patty Duke Syndrome was definitely my favorite of all the bands I've played in," Walsby says. "I'd like to release the recordings we made, but the last time I tried, a lot of lawyers got involved. Ryan made a point of not getting back in touch, until I finally called him out in an e-mail. He responded with a lot of obscenities and swearing. So not much has changed. I still think he's the most talented musician I've ever played with and also the most incredible mimic I've ever heard.

What's particularly sad about that is that when I first heard this story from Walsby a year or two back, he expressed how much he still respected Ryan as a musician and seriously regretted the fact that some of his own best work will probably never be released.

That's why I hate Ryan Adams and his boring music.

For more on Brian Walsby, who is a very nice, cool, smart and talented guy, please see his official website.

Off Topic: Amp'd Mobile Condoms Outlast Company

Big money, big ego, big bankruptcy sale:

A company called VoodooVox...occupies Amp'd Mobile's former posh offices on Union Square in Manhattan, complete with a massive terrace overlooking the city. VoodooVox CEO Scott Hamilton was able to acquire the space and it's custom-built contents "by feeding on the corpse of Amp'd," as he so delicately puts it. For $16,000 at bankruptcy court, he was able to to get a couple hundred thousand dollars worth (his estimate) of furniture and other surplus.

As usual, when someone leaves a place in haste, some things are left behind:

As Hamilton was cleaning out the desks and filing cabinets, he came across some of those excesses in the form of marketing schwag—like condoms stamped with the unfortunate tagline, "Try not to die." Little did the Amp'd marketing genius who came up with that line know that the expiration dates on the condoms would outlast the company.

Amp'd Mobile: Try not to die before your condom!

Pharrell Mobbed on Way to Blue Magic Shoot

Pharrell on 42nd Street

I'm assuming Pharrell's on his way to the recent Blue Magic video shoot for Jay-Z's single when he gets mobbed on 42nd St.  It's like a weird natural phenomenon or something.

More videos including a car crash at Billionaire Boys Club.

Plus some photos from the shoot.
