I don't have any exact figures for you but I've recently been seeing a significant number of hip hop and R&B related publicty emails in my Hip Hop Press inbox that use the Mad Mimi email marketing service.
Their low volume blog is also worth a look for email newsletter marketing insights.
Young Problemz - Da Problem (How's My Rapping?)
Young Problemz' Da Problem was released August 25th on Asylum.
It doesn't seem to be catching a lot of positive attention and, of course, it could just be that not enough people like them. I tried to get a quick sense of web response and, in the process, I began to realize that perhaps studying records that don't do well could be as useful a way of determining how best to promote albums as the typical route of studying the albums that succeeded. Studying failures is not a new concept but, up till now, I haven't really explored that very deeply.
I haven't done enough research to make any strong statements about Young Problemz but I did notice that they don't seem to have gotten the attention of the bloggers I would consider major though they've appeared on a variety of websites, have put out some mixtapes, etc. There's obviously been work put in yet the biggest gap in their efforts online seems to be with major bloggers.
The one thing that has caught people's attention and gotten posted is the Boi video [which is actually a remix with Gucci Mane and Mike Jones added] but that could be partly because videos are easy to toss up and if you're posting a lot, it doesn't matter so much if your blog's fans don't show interest in one video cause there's always others. I will say that I only got one email about Young Problemz and that's where I picked up the video but that's not much outreach and Asylum outsourced that.
Additional perspectives can be found at this thread on WordOfSouth.com.
I'm going to leave it at that for the moment with two points:
a) Putting out a video or, better, videos may be the most productive way to get widespread online coverage.
b) If the major bloggers aren't biting, maybe you should consider advertising on their sites.

Maybe it's a myth, maybe it' not. Maybe it's a myth that it's a myth! Either which way, the belief that positive Twitter posts saved Inglourious Basterds at the box office does not appear to have much compelling evidence, though I admit that I have yet to take a closer look.
It just reminds me of the Twitter blew up Eminem's album cover hype a few months back that seemed fueled more by Twitter fever than useful data of any kind.
Fake Eminem Soulja Boy Diss
This is supposed to be the fake Eminem diss of Soulja Boy (unless it's someone faking the fake diss!) and, though the voice sounds a lot like Eminem, the lyrics don't quite stand up to Eminem's typically inventive acid nor does the muddy enunciation in the verses.
But what I find interesting is that AllHipHop got served so they pulled it after promoting it while the folks at DJLionrockTV seized on it as a marketing opportunity.
One wonders if being associated with a fake Eminem diss for which one can't take credit is good marketing but, hey, this is hip hop and just about anything seems to go.

I just saw a headline saying Michael Jackson may have died so I seached Google News and found not only multiple reports but also the initial reflections on his career, of which there will be a deluge, as well as a Google ad topping the news with the following text:

I don't think I've written about the Ad Age Power 150 that now includes 1020 marketing blogs in a growing list that's ranked daily. I'm less interested in who the top blogs are than in using the Power 150 as a discovery tool to find useful blogs about marketing. Either way, it's pretty cool.
Operation Ignore Charles Hamilton
I'll be honest, I stopped following Jay Smooth back during the Obama campaign, I think. I don't remember the details though phrases like "left nitpicking" come to mind. However, he drops a rather brilliant video publicly humiliating Charles Hamilton by showing insight and understanding in a manner that reminded me that Charles Hamilton existed and that is likely to have a great deal of viral success, thus ensuring that others remember Charles Hamilton's existence, at least for the moment.
Honestly, I forgot about Hamilton cause I stopped following his blog and haven't seen mention of any singles made into music videos in a while. Maybe I'll be hearing about him more as I gradually start following more blogs again but, for me, 2009 is about ignoring annoying people as much as possible except when word gets out that they've done something productive.
Of course, I doubt Charles Hamilton will appreciate Jay Smooth's attention or analysis but this video is an awesome reminder that hip hop is full of damaged individuals who've achieved success without doing much healing in the process other than the healing that occurs through public acclamation and being able to pay one's bills.
In a lot of cases that seems to work well enough but clearly many of these guys need support. Jay Smooth feels the answer, at least in Charles Hamilton's case, is ignoring whatever they do and say beyond their music and I realize that I'm doing a version of that with most artists except that I add business deals to the mix and generally don't respond critically to the music itself. I just cover the related products from videos to albums to endorsements.
Of course, when they hit a certain level of fame, one can't ignore all their public statements because they have a material effect in the world. But Charles Hamilton? No problem, Jay. I'll just continue as per usual!

Update:
Wow, I'm getting up to speed on the Charles "Dilla" Hamilton controversy and I'm realizing Jay Smooth did him a solid with this video. It might make a couple of people not give Hamilton as hard a beatdown though I think he'll definitely be getting beat down. What a sad fool.
