Danyel Smith Talks VIBE w/Angela Yee

Danyel Smith, with Elliott Wilson as sidekick, talks to Angela Yee a bit about the VIBE closure without revealing anything at all of substance other than that she's a great corporate hire. Perfect for fans of Danyelliott who need a positive energy fix but that's about it.

Note: Regarding Danyelliott and stepping back from the publishing scene, this is the first time I've heard them speaking together and I think they'd make a great radio team.

T.I. Boots Alfamega, Hot 107.9 Drops Ball, NY Runs With It

T.I. kicks Alfamega out of Grand Hustle for his government snitchery and announces it during a radio show on Atlanta's Hot 107.9.

IllRoots has the audio and, generally speaking, Hot 107.9's getting name checked all over the place but no links cause they don't seem to have this available online.

Learn to blog, y'all!  Otherwise New York will keep stealing your thunder cause big NY media is now linking regularly to big NY blogs covering news from other locales.

This is no attack on New York but recognition that web democracy is failing as NY media closes rank and allies with NY bloggers.  Learn to build regionally or remain weed carriers.

Note: Gyant Unplugged, an Atlanta-based blogger, also has audio.

Update: I know mentioning "web democracy" will seem a bit overdone but, to me, true democracy spreads power out evenly rather than simply broadcasting from centers of power to the margins.  However, if you're not involved, you don't get democracy and that goes for web media in forms that people actually use as well.

Atlanta should be a hip hop media powerhouse by now so why isn't it?  Atlanta media hasn't run with the ball their artists gave them.

On a related note, there's also an emerging trend of mainstream media on the web shifting from name checking web sources to linking out and that's where I see certain patterns emerging.  No doubt I will have opportunity to return to this topic and we'll see if things are going where I think they're going in relationship to hip hop and the media.

Rapper's Delight Anniversary Promo Stop at New York's WFAN Radio

Rapper's Delight Anniversary Promo Stop at New York's WFAN Radio

Michael Wright aka Wonder Mike of Sugarhill, Guy O'Brien aka Master Gee of Sugarhill, Boomer Esiason of WFAN, Henry Williams aka Hendogg of Sugarhill, Tracy Temple aka T Dynasty of Sugarhill and Craig Carton of WFAN

Original Sugarhill Gang Celebrates 30th Anniversary of Rappers Delight with WFAN

Though Rapper's Delight was not the "original hip hop and rap music release", as the above press release claims, it was the single that introduced myself and so many others to the existence of hip hop.

Radio One Shares Tanking

When your stock's doing poorly and a sudden financial crisis hits, your stock tanks, and that's what's happened to Radio One, though some of the effects have been delayed.

In August, Radio One announced a second-quarter loss of $11.7 million.

At that time, Radio One's Class A stock, ROIA, had dropped to around $1 from the previous year's $4 and up and has continued to drop since then closing today at 79 cents.

Radio One's Class D stock, ROIAK, has dropped even further over the last 3 months from around $1 to under 10 cents.

The final blow bringing the Class D stock to its knees was the removal from Standard & Poor's SmallCap 600 index causing a sell-off by fund managers of around 6 million shares, a form of cascade failure that will be quite challenging from which to recover.

Late last month Radio One received a warning from the Nasdaq regarding possible delisting, though such a move has been suspended until next year due to the current financial crisis.

For Great Web Radio: taintradio.org

If you're into jazz and "related" music, I'd recommend checking out taintradio.org.

I've mostly heard jazz and world music but they program lots of stuff.  Basically it's a bunch of smart indie djs who play what they want.

I think they've got some kind of opposition to marketing and related concerns, yet they still desire an audience, so, since they do nice work, please consider checking them out.

But if you leave a comment, pretend like you stumbled upon the site while searching for a podcast of Jimi Hendrix improvising by a campfire in Romania and Bob will be much happier than if you tell him I "publicized" it.  Ooh, gross!

Hip Hop Radio Thriving in Denver & Columbus

As Arbitron's Personal People Meter rearranges the radio landscape one Denver hip hop station has benefitted from the new data source.

Though I'm not sure if there's a PPM connection, Columbus, Ohio's hip hop and RnB station Power 107-5 moved up to no. 1 in the Spring Arbitron ratings.

7 Days of Seth Godin at Hear 2.0: Radio & The Dip

Mark Ramsey at Hear 2.0 has a great series of interview clips with Seth Godin in progress.  They focus on concepts from his upcoming book, The Dip, and they're all good so far.

I'll update as they drop.

7 Days of Seth:
Chapter 1: "The Short Head beats the Long Tail"
Chapter 2: "Is Radio Headed for a Dead End?"
Chapter 3: "What happens to Radio when every car is WiFi?"
Chapter 4: "How Wall Street is Killing Radio"
Chapter 5: "Why HD Radio is NOT the Answer"
Chapter 6: "Radio should be in the Relationship Business"
Chapter 7: "How Screwed is the Music Business?"

Nice series overall.  Not as dramatic an ending as I'd like but a great example of Seth sketching out his core ideas in relationship to the radio business.

Hot 97's Program Director John Dimick Says Bye

Interesting interview with Hot 97's outgoing program director John Dimick who took the job just a couple of weeks before the Tsunami Song incident, one of many problems at New York's Hot 97 station, the majority of which are not mentioned in the article.

I understand why Dimick spins the Tsunami Song chapter in as positive a light as possible but that was a bad look for everyone involved and, as befits Hot 97's prominence in hip hop radio, was a very clear example of how Hot 97 has facilitated many of the problems we face in hip hop.

Sirius Satellite Radio: 50 Cent Promo, Julien Smith Podcast

50 Cent Sirius Commercial

I ran into the above 50 Cent promo for the Shade 45 channel on Sirius Satellite Radio recently.  It's old and boring but I thought you'd want to know.

In happier news, I was recently reminded that I hadn't mentioned something new and exciting, Julien Smith's podcast In Over Your Head is now broadcast on Sirius!

I should have congratulated Julien on that long ago.

Maybe if Sirius had focused on gathering more such talent, rather than spending millions for big stars, they'd be looking stronger right now.  But I'm not up on satellite radio.

Any Sirius or XM listeners out there with an opinion on what you're hearing?

Star's Arrest Restores Street Cred, Bloggers React

According to 1010 WINS, Star was called in by the police to turn in his 9 and his target practice permit and was then busted upon arrival.  He was charged with "harassment and endangering the welfare of a child" and there's also a hate crime angle there.

New York City Councilman John C. Liu released a statement:
This is a real consequence for Torain and sends a real message to other would-be racist pedophile radio stooges that they are not immune from the law.

That's a great phrase, "would-be racist pedophile radio stooges".

I'm actually joking in the headline regarding Star's arrest restoring street cred, though that's how a lot of cynical folks will take it.  However, according to The fell clutch of circumstances, DJ Envy is the one who looks bad for talking tough and then hiding out while Star was simply calling his bluff.

Checking the comments at Nah Right reveals a real mix of perspectives from Star's a punk that needs a beatdown to Envy's a punk for not taking care of business.

Some other comments from thekid10705:
It’s Radio not real life... I don’t agree one minute with 5 0 getting involved...Radio personalities have always been outrageous...It’s called ratings( aka BIG CAKE)...

And from Bird:
I don’t know why we always gotta follow behind white people instead of building on our own culture. Howard Stern started this shock-jock mess and Star followed right behind him in the urban market and apparently Envy is following Star. I think in addition to spreading poison to their audience they are also affecting themselves.

I'm not going to try to account for all the responses or to represent all the opinions that will emerge on blogs, not to mention other venues, but at a certain point, when Star gets another job or some other incident closes this chapter, we'll have an interesting example of how one negotiates such a pr disaster in the always wacky world of hip hop.

I'll have to say, though, that the comments about Star's actions at hiphopmusic.com (prior to the arrest), reveal that, though Star has his supporters, a great number of people are angered by his statements.  Given the fact that the hip hop blogging world is generally full of apologists for the approach Star and other shock jocks take, it's been refreshing for me to see those responses.
