Adidas Rod Laver Mids: Aluminum/Dk Onyx [So Close Yet So Far Away]
The recession hit me early and, since decent professional part-time work was already hard to come by in Podunk Raleigh, I've been ignoring the existence of sneaker shopping as a pasttime. But it's a recession and prices are being slashed and sometimes a man needs some sneakers, some grey sneakers, ideally at a reasonable price, without overly visible branding [though, damn, Nike's game is so strong they temporarily distracted me from my real needs].
I found them at FootLocker, right there between a bunch of not so special shoes, the Adidas Rod Laver Mids whose Aluminum/Dk Onyx colorways spoke to me of better times.
But they weren't on sale and I needed a sale, but they were a great price new and fit so nicely and looked so good, so I decided to check out some other stores and come back in a few days when I had accepted that Foot Locker wasn't holding any sales right now and neither was Finish Line, though they didn't have these special shoes.
You can guess the rest. The following week they'd been shipped back, from all Footlockers all over the world to some special destination from which they could not be retrieved, but it's all good, they're online in my size, size 9. But I don't like mail ordering sneakers and I waited even though I'd tried them on and they fit so well and looked so good. Why did I wait?
Because the sneaker gods wanted to remind me of how the world works.
So, yes, I waited just long enough so that all available size 9 Aluminum/Dk Onyx Rod Laver Mids were gone from every web outlet that carried them. And, somehow, in that process, they had become the most perfect sneaker on the planet.
IPATH Watson: Grey Suede/Charcoal Grey/Red
But I can't do the "keep waiting until someone puts them on eBay and pay twice the price game" right now. I would feel like an even bigger sucker and I'm sure the sneaker gods would have ensured that I not only got my BA but went on for my MA in understanding how deeply I had screwed up.
So I went further afield, checking spots that I knew wouldn't have anything but might have something that could hold me down through hard times and, in the process, I recovered from my most recent colossal error in judgment.
I finally took a left turn and hit Endless Grind, a Raleigh institution started by skaters for skaters, where there's always an awesome range of discounted older merchandise in addition to some beautiful new ones, as a nephew of mine periodically reminds me. Aided by an old-school skater who clued me in to why these weird feeling shoes were a perfect fit, I found an awesome pair of IPATHs, the IPATH Watson: Grey Suede/Charcoal Grey/Red, my first pair of skate sneaks!
Life is good again, plus, I made a few discoveries along the way.
A) Skate sneaks are different!
B) Down here at the malls, Foot Locker and Finish Line aren't even blinking at the recession, which seems to be a strategic decision though it would be worth checking in more closely on their financials to see what's up.
C) I finally figured out that the kids in urban wear, who seem to be a tiny minority at Crabtree Valley Mall, once one of the biggest in the Southeast, are busy shopping at the Triangle Town Center, where I'd never been.
But I'll save that much more interesting and relevant story till later this week, after I've done some more research.
Stay tuned!
Update:
I am happy to report that my brother found the Rod Laver's online, apparently the mystery shipment depot resulted in delivery back to Adidas and they're now available in many sizes at ShopAdidas.com as well as at least one other place.
But they're cheaper at Adidas!
Now I'm filthy with great/grey shoes. Yay!
