I Love Money: Reality TV Gets Real

VH1's announcement of I Love Money, a reality tv show that gathers together folks from Rock of Love, I Love New York and Flavor of Love, finally presents an honest reality series to the American public.

What's weird is that this is being labeled a celebreality series when the participants only claim to fame is being in a reality series featuring a celebrity.

More importantly, the return of such celebreals raises the question:
Can zombies eating zombie brains result in mad cow disease?

VH1 begins to unveil the zombies in question.

"'Reality TV is just cameras following you around and if you own the cameras and the production company then you own the content so you are able to control the series,' said Romeo who is bringing independence to reality TV the same way his father Master P brought independence to hip-hop 15 years ago."

Reality TV: Ish Entertainment, Diddy Assistant Search [II], ego trip's Miss Rap Supreme

No time to talk but I thought those interested in reality tv would find these two announcements of interest.  I'm highlighting the rap angle but, like they say, it's bigger [and yet so much smaller] than hip hop!

Michael Hirschorn and Stella Stolper Form Ish Entertainment and Announce First-Look Deal With MTV Networks Music and Logo Group:
"The company, which will be based in Los Angeles and New York, launches with a commitment to three series under a first-look deal with MTV, VH1, CMT, and Logo...The deal will provide Ish with development funding and overhead with the aim of bringing Hirschorn's successful development and production talents not only to VH1 but to the entire Music and Logo Group."

"During his six years at VH1, the last three as head of original programming, Hirschorn oversaw a remarkable string of hits, from "I Love the 80s" and "Best Week Ever" to "Hogan Knows Best," "The (White) Rapper Show," "The Salt n' Pepa Show," and "Flavor of Love," including its many spin-offs. He also recently won an Emmy as an executive producer of "DMC: My Adoption Journey," one of the many documentaries developed under VH1's emerging "Rock Docs" shingle."

"Stolper, meanwhile, has been responsible for bringing top talent to the network, including Drew Barrymore, the Wayans Brothers, Mo'Nique, Larry The Cable Guy and many more."

VH1 Announces New and Expanded Roles for Creative Team Responsible for Over Five Years of Record-Breaking Programming:
"In development news, VH1 has given the greenlight to three new projects."

"VH1 has partnered with P.Diddy on a reality competition series that will search the country for someone who has the smarts and stamina to be the hip hop mogul's assistant.  The series is slated to premiere in Summer 2008."

""egotrip's Miss Rap Supreme" --  VH1 has once again teamed up with ego trip for a brand new series that follows on the heels of the hugely successful "ego trip's The (White) Rapper Show" series.  "ego trip's Miss Rap Supreme" puts a distaff twist on the South Bronx-based series that challenged contestants' musical "cred," knowledge of hip hop culture and their ideas about race."

"Ten female contestants from across the country will live in a house in Los Angeles where their quick-witted rhymes, stage presence and their mental toughness will be put to the test in this 8 episode series. Rap legend Michael "MC Serch" Berrin (of the group 3rd Bass) returns with a new partner, Grammy Award-nominated rapper Yo-Yo.  Set to premiere in April 2008."

Both the Diddy assistant search and ego trip's Miss Rap Supreme sound like real winners.  I won't be watching them but I bet they'll rake in the dough.

The assistant search is particularly interesting since the first round started on YouTube, went to Oprah's show and inspired a VH1 series.  That's a very, very smart use of the web as a test platform.

On that note, I stand by my criticisms of Diddy's assistant game but criticizing someone for the way they exploit a platform is not the same as saying they won't make money off it.  That's why any analysis based on Web 2.0 values should not be assumed to be an analysis of the possible success of a company's business model unless it's positioning itself as upholding or monetizing those values.

Rik Cordero on Art, Commerce & Three/21 Media

illRoots has a nice interview with Rik Cordero in which he discusses his video company, Three21 Media:

illRoots:
What do [you] think separates Three21 from any other production company out right now?

Rik Cordero:
I think what separates us is that we care and we listen. I know that sounds cliché and generic but its true. We aim to capture the human condition [whether it's]... a bunch of guys rapping about the block or a battered woman or heartfelt song about a guy who’s brother is on drugs or if its Joell with the struggles in the hood, its about capturing that humanity and listening and caring, that’s what really separates us. We take that time to figure out what the artist is about, and translating what they are feeling...

When we first started doing music videos, we were criticized that they weren’t official videos and that just motivated me to say what makes that official and where does that elitism stem from. Is it something that the public has been conditioned to or is it something that has to be cost "X" amount of dollars to be considered a video or is it art for the sake of art.

There's some interesting looking stuff in here that seems to be marred by a poor transcription.  That's unfortunate cause part of what he's getting at is how the Internet enabled his business and allowed him to maintain an artistic approach to commerce.  He also discusses his business structure which is unclear but sounds interesting.

YouTube Undermines Power of Embedded Videos

This may all become clear when I spend some time later today browsing tech blogs but, for the last day or so, all the embedded YouTube videos I've seen outside of YouTube are displaying a blank gray screen.

I'm hoping this is temporary because the still image from the video previously displayed meant that I had a useful graphic element whether or not people actually played the videos.

Now I have ugly dead space at a time when I was already planning to cut back on embedded videos that aren't really strong.  And anything one would want to post without additional text, like the Common for Barack video at the top of the right hand corner, is now totally unusable because who knows what the heck it is.

Not a good look for YouTube.

Update:
Yay, it wasn't permanent.  But I'm still going to be proactive about diversifying my video sources.

The Wire's David Simon to Set Next Show in New Orleans

Random House Widget for David Simon's The Corner

In an extended profile in The New Yorker, David Simon, creator of The Wire, reveals that he is planning to set his next show in New Orleans.

This guy is one of the best researchers working in television drama and such a show will most likely be an amazing thing.

Via Ethan Brown.

Background on David Simon:
David Simon researched and wrote Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets which led to NBC's Homicide: Life on the Street.

He then researched and coauthored with Edward Burns The Corner: A Year in the Life of an Inner-City Neighborhood which resulted in HBO's The Corner.

Finally he created, executive produced and cowrote The Wire, one of the greatest gifts to television and for that we thank him many times over!

Sample YouTube Video Unit from Google's AdSense

Hip Hop/Rap YouTube Video Unit from Google's AdSense

You may have been hearing about Google/YouTube AdSense video ads so here's a hip hop/rap version for examination.

Quick Response:
I really don't like ads appearing over the image.  I still think 3 to 5 second prerolls are the best bet onscreen.

I'm also wondering if they're hosting the video units differently than the general site.  YouTube has seen a lot of downtime and poor performance lately and that would not work for an ad network.

Pharrell Williams to Work on ABC TV Show Limelight

Pharrell Williams will be doing something or other for a planned ABC tv show called Limelight that:
revolves around prodigious students and faculty at an innovative performing-arts school in New York, where young men and women explore the combustible blend of contemporary music and dance while balancing their dreams, hopes and struggles.

One would assume something musical but who am I to presume when great Billboard writers don't say?  Besides, since it's Pharrell, he really could be involved in other ways.

All I know is, that's one Southerner that's done ok!

Update:

Elijah Wood Guests Stars in Premier of Yo Gabba Gabba!

Yo Gabba Gabba!, "Nick Jr.'s new live-action music series", premiers August 20th with Elijah Wood as guest stars.

The Roots' beatboxer Rahzel will appear at some point in the season but Biz Markie gets the hookup with Biz's Beat of the Day:
The first season of Yo Gabba Gabba! will feature a recurring role by Hip Hop legend Biz Markie in a "Biz's Beat of the Day" segment where he teaches preschoolers how to beat-box, and a recurring role by singer, illustrator and composer Mark Mothersbaugh (Devo) in a "Mark's Magic Pictures" drawing segment. Additional guest stars include, Elijah Wood in the premiere episode ("Eat"), Mya, The Shins, Sugarland, Rahzel, Tony Hawk, Laila Ali, Sean Kingston, Nikki Flores, Hector Jimenez, Smoosh, The Aquabats, The Aggrolites and Cornelius.

It's good to see Biz in on this and I think beatboxing is a great way to introduce kids to the rhythmic magic of hip hop.

The Move to Video and Live Events: The Mixtape Show, Ill Doctrine, Internets Celebrities, Hip-Hop Chess Federation

Video's where the action is right now and that includes hip hop vlogging.  Recent announcements from hip hop bloggers and podcasters indicate that both the content creators and mainstream media are digging in.

Dex Digital's audio podcast the Mixtape Show is going video and is asking for submissions for a video podcast launching in July:
If you’ve been waiting for a progressive outlet for your progressive content/product/movement, this is that time to get on board with us. Shows will be featured as free downloads in iTunes, the Mixtape Show site, and also made available on YouTube and other hip-hop related networks.

Jay Smooth, long known for hiphopmusic.com which is soon to be a group blog, is now vlogging at Ill Doctrine and he's got the goods.  The project involves some kind of partnership with XXL and with the Podtech Network.

The creators of the Ghetto Big Mac now have their own home at Internets Celebrities.

There have been many hip hop film and video makers posting their work on YouTube and other outlets but this seems to be the first wave of hip hop podcasters and bloggers making a visible commitment to video, though the Internets Celebrities may have been first in this crowd.

I think it was Julien Smith that got me thinking about the shift to video back in March and the more recent sale of Wallstrip to CBS that got me fixated.

Short video is an ideal form for Web publishing.  It's self-contained and already microchunked and monetizable.  It appeals to multiple senses and short attention spans.  Smart, creative people can do it relatively quickly and cheaply.

These attributes of short video make it ideal for hip hop which is already off to a good start with music videos, quick interviews and cell phone clips.

What hip hop is missing out on are live events at a time when they're growing in importance in marketing and in B2b realms.  While it's hard to miss rock's ability to thrive in live venues, hip hop has been plagued with both the image and reality of violence at concerts as well as the ongoing shutdowns of small, local venues.

When folks like Young Buck are making like Charles Manson with a fork at major awards events, it's hard not to say that hip hop brought its problems on itself.

But rap acts that fall in the indie rock demographic, including Brother Ali and El-P, have solid bases of support in rock oriented clubs around the country while bigger acts can rake it in with international tours.  Community events open up other possibilities.

One of the more interesting events of late has been the gatherings of the Hip-Hop Chess Federation and this will be a project to watch.  Adisa Banjoko's dream of connecting hip hop and chess has attracted serious attention with the first two events and there will be some fun announcements coming soon from this organization which has many ties to ProHipHop.

Live events remain a potential growth area for hip hop possibly beyond that of other musical genres.

It would be overdoing it to say that online video and offline events are opposites since they can intertwine and complement each other so readily.  Each represents opportunities that are extremely rich, focused and monetizable with the possiblity of excessive value for both creators and viewer/participants whose roles may well blur in the process.  And each are arguably the ideal, self-contained vehicle for their respective domains.

Next Thing Now:
Interesting related developments I'm following include moblogging, B2B blogs spinning off events, online streaming video of live events and the changing role of movie theaters.  It would also be productive to follow developments in forms of lifestreaming such as Twitter and people that videotape everything they do.  Let me know if you hear of any services that facilitate editing and microchunking excessive amounts of live footage.

Update:
I left out two key areas of interest in live events, the consolidation and development of live venues by companies like Live Nation and the ongoing success of music festivals such as Bonnaroo, that bought its festival site and is doing quite well [via coolfer].

Though Live Nation is widely reviled as an extension of Clear Channel, such efforts raise the likelihood of hip hop finding suitable performance venues.  And while Bonnaroo typically books only a handful of hip hop acts at best, related successes in hip hop [minus the camping] include the Rock The Bells festival, Hot 97's Summer Jam, Jay-Z's Reasonable Doubt anniversary concert at Madison Square Gardens and even HSAN's Financial Summits, as well as many other successful events that occur year round from car shows to promotional parties.

Still, there's more money to be made with live events.

Live Nation TV is an excellent example of tying together all the threads mentioned in this post.

Dbrad's Confessions of a B.E.T. Producer

Confessions of a B.E.T. Producer

Eskay posted this video of Dbrad talking about the early days at BET.  There's more via Dbrad's MySpace page.  I don't know anything about this guy and the reference to Aleister Crowley [Alexter Crawley] is quite a strange one in this context.  However, it seems like real insider stuff and I'm looking forward to checking out the other videos.

Update:
I've been watching more of these videos and it stays interesting but it's like Dbrad didn't get the recognition he wanted for, apparently, breaking hip hop on a national basis via BET.  That's right, you can thank him and him alone for the early success of Rocafella and Dipset and one his coworkers for the rise of Texas.

Not only that, you can blame BET for destroying hip hop by taking Dbrad out of the decision making loop!

Wow!  Who knew?

Here's the flow:
Part I - BET was like a family before it got sold.
Part II - Dbrad wants his props!
Part III - On the political tip.
Part IV - Dbrad reminds us that payback is a b*tch.

Look for the followup, coming soon!

Update:
Dr. Drew has an interview with Dbrad and it seems to confirm my growing suspicion that this guy is mostly upset because he went out with a gay boss and only realized afterwards that the guy was interested in something more. Other than that, though the behind the scenes description of how things operated at BET are interesting, there is nothing new here about how execs screw things up or that there are plenty of gay execs in the entertainment industry.

Def Poetry Commercial f/Thyai Dunn and ?

I have no idea when this came out as per usual when I get a video without such details.  We really need a tv nut here at ProHipHop.  For many people, the spot features basketball player Thyai Dunn but I want to know who the poet is.  Anybody?

College Students Watch TV! Adult Swim to Benefit & Promises to Stop Planting Bombs!!

When I first heard about Nielsen adding college students away from home to their tv viewing stats, I was floored that this move had not occurred previously.  Even as an undergrad in the late 70s and early 80s, there was a lot of tv watching happening all around me.  Duh.

My generation was watching huge amounts of television and my younger brothers' generations were watching even more.  We sure didn't stop when we went to school [ok, I did, but I was one of the few].  Countless tv shows lost ad revenue that they could have claimed and if you look at the length of time this situation has gone on, I think we're talking U.S. deficit clearing numbers here [current George W. & pals created deficit, that is].

I also think we're looking at a lost opportunity for a Nielsen competitor to have emerged focused on the college market, though the proliferation of youth marketers, trend watchers and demographic researchers took up that slack from another angle.  Not that it helped anybody's tv ratings.

This move will obviously greatly affect tv shows with a college audience.  Cartoon Network's Adult Swim, which has been one of the more interesting places to find hip hop on television, expects ratings to "jump by 35 percent."  That's large, especially for programming that's already proven to be a powerhouse and continues to set new records.

What's really weird is being reminded of how few people actually affect these ratings.  According to the NY Times' article with which I began:
To add college students to the ratings, Nielsen contacted the roughly 450 families in its sample who had children in college. About 30 percent of those families agreed to let Nielsen put a meter in the college student’s dorm room or off-campus apartment.

It's a bit unclear if this sample was for the initial test only but if that's all they got, we're talking about the college age children of 135 families moving huge amounts of ad dollars in the near future.  Statistically valid or not, that's a ridiculously pathetic sample given the diversity of any slice of the population as broad as college students.

But if it helps Adult Swim, all power to them!

Now, please, stop planting those bombs outdoor ads or you're going to jail!
